Who said you have to be in the dark to do astronomy! Turning your telescope to the Sun is fun and educational. Watch the march of giant sunspots, the clouds of glowing vapor in the photosphere, and solar "granulation" detail. But be sure to protect your precious vision with a safe Orion solar filter! Looking at the Sun without one, even for an instant, can permanently damage your eyes.

Superior to Mylar
These full-aperture optical glass filters deliver superb views of the Sun, without risk to your eyes. While more expensive than Mylar filters, Orion solar filters provide better contrast, a more natural yellow-orange—color rather than blue—and are more durable. They’re ideal for photographing the Sun too.

The glass elements are machine-polished and triple-coated with an advanced nickel-chromium stainless steel alloy for a scratch-resistant surface. The filter passes only a fraction of the incoming light, rejecting harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation.

Each Orion filter is mounted in an aluminum cell that slide-fits over the front of your telescope. Size shown in the chart below is the ideal diameter of front of telescope; filter will fit diameters up to 1/4" smaller with foam tape liner supplied.

The 80mm short tube scope I use my filter on is not made by Orion. Still the fit is excellent. The image of the Sun through this filter is just outstanding. I like the natural color the Sun has with this filter. Build quality on this piece is excellent.

...so I bought this for a pal's new Apex 90, as my friend particularly enjoys solar observing. These filters are ruggedly coated, and should last a long time, given the kind of gentle treatment they will receive from both my friend and myself. Now she's set for the Transit of Venus!
Favorite viewing location:??Backyard or driveway of home
Favorite object to observe:??Open Star Clusters
Pros: heavy optical coating

I'm using this with an Orion Short-Tube 90.
Installation was a breeze; the foam shims really helped to make the fit secure. What you don't want is any chance your filter will come off while your eye is on the eyepiece!
Optically the filter introduced no aberration that I could detect. The sun has a very nice golden appearance and sunspots are easily visible with high contrast.
I bought this for the transit of Venus this June. Even if it's cloudy that day, I'll be glad I bought this. I should have gotten one years ago.
Orion rulez. Now I need to get a CCD camera before june!
Favorite viewing location:??Stellafane
Favorite object to observe:??Sol
Pros: awesome views of our local star
Cons: you won't want to use your scope at night any more

The filter arrived in a sturdy box, and was well packaged. It fit my ETX 90, but I did experience a bit of light leak. I used a small strip of weatherstriping foam on top of the existing seal to improve it. I have used it to view the sun many mornings and afternoons. I can recommend this to experienced astronomers as a valuable tool. The filter also fit my Celestron C80ED apo scope although I had to remove the dew shield and I do not recommend it for that application, I would measure the dew shield before ordering any solar filter. The plastic/nylon retention screws can be replaced at Lowes if you lose one...
Favorite viewing location:??During the day, duh! anywhere I can see the sun
Favorite object to observe:??Duh, the Sun...
Pros: dark, shows solar disks and sunspots
Cons: measure first before purchase
Yes, I recommend this product!
