Who said you have to be in the dark to do astronomy! Turning your telescope to the Sun is fun and educational. Watch the march of giant sunspots, the clouds of glowing vapor in the photosphere, and solar "granulation" detail. But be sure to protect your precious vision with a safe Orion solar filter! Looking at the Sun without one, even for an instant, can permanently damage your eyes.

Superior to Mylar
These full-aperture optical glass filters deliver superb views of the Sun, without risk to your eyes. While more expensive than Mylar filters, Orion solar filters provide better contrast, a more natural yellow-orange—color rather than blue—and are more durable. They’re ideal for photographing the Sun too.

The glass elements are machine-polished and triple-coated with an advanced nickel-chromium stainless steel alloy for a scratch-resistant surface. The filter passes only a fraction of the incoming light, rejecting harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation.

Each Orion filter is mounted in an aluminum cell that slide-fits over the front of your telescope. Size shown in the chart below is the ideal diameter of front of telescope; filter will fit diameters up to 1/4" smaller with foam tape liner supplied.

I purchased the filter for my Orion Deep Space Explorer (DSE) 6" Dob that I've had since the mid-90s. The DSE scopes have been supersceded by the current line up of affordable Dobs so Orion doesn't list specifically which filter diameter to purchase for the DSEs. I measured the tube and decided the 7.52" was the most likely candidate. I did not contact Orion specifically to ask which diameter they recommended.
The filter arrived on schedule just a few days after I placed the order. When I opened the package I noticed the aluminum filter frame was bent inward quite pronounced at one of the thumbscrew positions...something that might have happened if the filter had been dropped and it landed on the screw. The aluminum frame at the other two screws was also tweaked in a bit but not as severely. Wanting to get the filter mounted
on the scope, I managed to fix what I feel was a severe quality control issue.
At first, I thought I'd made the wrong choice for size as the filter would not slip over the front of the scope. There are two "layers" of foam tape along the inside circumference of the aluminum frame for good reason - to keep the filter ON the telescope.
With a lot of pressure on the aluminum frame, I was able to push / coerce the filter onto the scope and subsequently lift the scope (OTA only) off the ground slightly by holding only the filter to make sure the filter was securely attached by friction fit alone. I then snugged down the thumb screws for good measure.
Being mid-day in Phoenix Arizona in mid-July it was pretty hot outside. And despite it being "monsoon" season when we get our share of clouds, thunderstorms, and rain it was a prefect blue-sky day. After installing a 25mm eyepiece, I set up the DSE in the backyard and aimed it toward the sun. I didn't take me very long to find the sun through the eyepiece. My very first telescopic view of Sol provided a very pleasing experience. A couple of tiny sunspot groups were clearly visible.
I then tried a 10mm eyepiece. I'd moved the scope a bit and when I tried to find the sun with the 10mm I couldn't do it even after a minute or so. I put he 25mm back in and re-tried. Couldn't do it. The heat was starting to be uncomfortable so I just went back inside...content with first light through the filter. I'm looking forward to more viewing time.
Overall I think this is a quality filter that does what it is designed to do.
Incidentally, the filter arrived in a much larger box chock full of some other Orion goodies that go with yet another larger box that arrived at the same time: the AstroView 120ST EQ Refractor, sun filter for it, 2" 38mm eyepiece, etc etc but those are items for additional reviews!
Yes, I recommend this product!
