The crosshairs in standard finder scopes are difficult to see in the dark, which makes centering an object something of a guessing game. Well, we saw the light, and we now offer this finder scope with illuminated crosshairs, the Orion 8x40 Illuminated Finder Scope with Bracket. An adjustable-intensity red LED in the illuminator arm lights an etched-glass double crosshair reticle, making it as easy as target practice to center your viewing or photo subject or guide star. Centering an object precisely on the finder scope's crosshairs will ensure that it appears in your main telescope's eyepiece or on your camera's charge coupled device (CCD) chip, exactly where you want it.

As a view finder, this unit exceeded my expectations. The view through this viewfinder as great. One can easily make out fainter objects in the sky and center the telescope on them. M31 was clear and bring. Aligning the finder scope is easy and quick with the adjustment screws. It is not uncommon for me to bump into the finder scope and I have found that minor bumps do not adversely affect the alignment with the main telescope.
As good as this viewfinder is with the optics, the illuminator leaves things to be desired. The on-off switch is supposed to be dim-able. However, I havd found that using it in the low light output settings, it will not stay on reliably. I usually have to turn it up pretty bright or hold the dial just right.
Overall, I do like the unit and would recommend it to someone needing a finder scope.
Pros: good optics
Cons: unreliable low power setting
Yes, I recommend this product!

Works fine except that it is hard to look into it when attached to my 6 in Dobsonian, especially when the scope is at higher elevation.
No, I do not recommend this product.

I wish I had purchased this years ago. When I first mounted it on my scope, I was amazed at the clarity. I spent several minutes just looking through it before I aligned it with my scope.

The optical quality of the finder scope is excellent. An illuminated finder scope is the best way to go to line up goto scopes on objects. You can dim the LED low enough to use for most conditions. It is also bright enough for daytime alignment. The problem is that it way to easy to leave on and drain the batteries. The light source doesn't screw in tight enough to prevent movement and thereby it easy not to click off the LED switch. The watch/electronic battery* (GP189) is not standard from most stores, and must be ordered on line from suppliers like Amazon.com, where the shipping cost is more than the cost of the batteries. Other than these minor issues with LED light source, it is a great accessory for any scope.
Favorite viewing location:??Boulder, CO
Favorite object to observe:??Solar system objects, Planets, Comets, Sun, and Moon
Pros: excellent optics, dimmable led, great rectile for centering
Cons: battery non-standard, light source turns too easily
Yes, I recommend this product!
