Focusing at high magnification with a standard rack-and-pinion focuser can be a real challenge. The focuser action is coarse, making it hard to nail the exact focus point. This precision-machined adapter makes fine focusing a breeze. It replaces the 2"-to-1.25" eyepiece adapter in telescopes equipped with a 2" focuser, allowing very fine helical focusing with just a feather touch. Critical focus is easier to achieve, and images stay steadier. The Orion Helical Fine-Focusing Adapter features dual rubber grip rings and setscrew lock. Works with 1.25" eyepieces. Requires at least 9mm inward focus travel.

I purchased one of these fine focus adapters for visual use in my 6 inch F5 Meade Schmidt Newtonian. An F5 scope like all fast F ratio scopes is more difficult to achieve precise focus than slower systems. Only a slight movement of the focus knob makes a big difference in the image quality making precise focus difficult. The solution is often to swap out the simple stock rack & pinion for a dual speed Crayford focuser (that often costs more than the scope) ! This is where this simple and effective device comes to the rescue. With the Orion fine focus adapter It is now extremely easy to precisely focus my scope. Even at over 200X images now come precisely into sharp focus where before it was hit or miss. And it didn't have to spend $500 for a Crayford to get that performance. I highly recommend this product.
Pros: cost effective alternative to a crayford, great for high power visual use

I have a modest 8" f6 dob with a single speed Crayford focuser that can be cranky at high magnification, especially when it's cold. All of my high mag. EPs are 1 1/4 barrels, so this device completely eliminated my problem at 1/3 the cost of a two speed focuser. Orion is the only place I was able to find such a thing. Good job!

This adapter is useful if you have a 2" diagonal and if several users needing different fine diopter adjustments want to view the same objects. Like at a star party. It is not adequate for precision viewing. It has significant play in both axial and longitudinal directions. I have seen a helical focuser home made by an amateur from plumbing parts that was tighter than this one.
Pros: great idea
Cons: lousy mechanical constuction

I bought this focus adapter to be used with my 12", f5 Newtonian, to provide fine-focusing capability without the cost of replacing the existing focuser. Mechanically the adapter fits nicely in the existing focuser, and holds the EP securely. However, the threads between the two parts of the adapter fit loosely with each other, which allows the EP to "wiggle". For objects that fill the FOV of the EP this allows the part of the object at the edges to be out of focus. A great idea, but the thread fit needs to be better.
