Optically fast refractor telescopes used for astrophotography are often plagued by significant field curvature, which is especially noticeable when using CCD imagers with APS-C sized and larger sensors, or DSLR cameras. Orion's handy field flattener resolves the issue by providing excellent field correction while preserving the focal length attributes of your telescope. Designed for use with refractors with focal lengths of 400mm to 650mm and focal ratios of f/5 to f/7.5, the Orion Field Flattener for Short Refractors lets you enjoy the full imaging potential of your fast refractor telescope. Fully multi-coated, 38mm clear aperture optics and a glare-reducing threaded interior ensure maximum image contrast. Backfocus of 55mm is required, we recommend using the Orion T-thread Spacer Ring Kit (sold separately) to achieve proper distance for use with CCD imagers. Use with a DSLR requires a T-ring for the camera (T-ring sold separately). Weighs 7.5 oz.

I purchased this to use with my AT72ED which had pretty severe curvature. It flattened the images about 90% which is about the same as images I've seen using the ATFF.
I use this with a Nilon D50 camera and am happy with the results. I would have rated it 5 if the image were perfectly flat.

Cons: doesn't flatten 100%

I have been using the Orion F/F with my Canon 450D. I agree 100% with patolland's review. The F/F almost corrects the entire image except for a small portion of the right side when using with my 450D. I have also ran into a minor issue with reflections on bright stars when using the F/F with my IDAS LPS Filter. Overall the F/F is very solid and I will continue to use with my 450D but seems it would work even better with a smaller chip.

The Orion Field Flattener is very elegant looking out of the box. The shiny nature of the flattener retains fingerprints (not a deal breaker). I tried the flattener with my QHY10 camera, Orion spacers and my Explore Scientific 80mm APO. I believe the spacing was 54mm (a mm or two short of the recommendation - so please take this into account). I did have coma in all 4 corners on closeup reveiew of the image but not as bad as it would have been without the corrector (about 85% correction). Since the QHY10 is a 28.4mm chip, it could be that this field flattener can't handle 28.4mm diagnogal chips completely. I believe it will do well with 26mm chips or smaller based on what I have seen. I would compare this corrector with at AT-FF. It is less expensive than the AT-FF as does the same basic job. The only FF I have used that completely elimininates coma in my 80mm APO is the TV2008-TRF but it is also a reducer, which the Orion FF is not. Basically this is a good field flattener but doesn't completely cover larger chips.

Pros: inexpensive, comparable to higher priced field flatteners
Cons: doesn't quite cover 28.4mm imaging chips.
