Employing the use of both a dedicated autoguider and guide scope is arguably the best way to optimize the accuracy of any astrophotography pursuit. In the recent past however, this enhanced imaging precision came with a very hefty price tag. Just a few short years ago, a dedicated autoguider could easily cost more than many astrograph-quality telescopes. To make matters worse, most guide scopes of the recent past were prohibitively long, bulky, and difficult to align with repeatable accuracy. Today, thanks to technological progress and the availability of the highly sensitive yet affordable Orion StarShoot AutoGuider, astrophotographers can enjoy accurate imaging results without emptying their pockets. With a sensitive autoguider like the Orion StarShoot AutoGuider, any astrophotographer can enjoy optimized imaging precision by using a small-aperture guide scope with a much shorter focal length than the unwieldy instruments of the past. Along these lines, Orion is proud to announce our latest affordable autoguiding innovation - the Magnificent Mini AutoGuider!

Our compact, all-in-one autoguiding solution includes everything you need to enjoy enhanced accuracy in all your astrophotographs. Designed for use with imaging instruments up to 1500mm in focal length, the Magnificent Mini AutoGuider package includes a 50mm mini-refractor guide scope, StarShoot AutoGuider, dovetail guide scope bracket, 1.25" parfocal ring, dovetail mounting base, and a small adapter plate. The 50mm aperture, 162mm focal length (f/3.2) mini guide scope features fully multi-coated achromatic optics. You’ll never have to search for potential guide stars thanks to the mini guide scope’s bright and wide field-of-view. An adjustable-focus objective lens lets you set the guide scope to ideal focus with a knurled locking collar. Our popular StarShoot AutoGuider features a 1.2" format 1.3MP CMOS sensor with 5.2 x 5.2 micron sized pixels for accurate guiding performance. On the mini guide scope, a machined aluminum 1.25" adapter with three thumbscrews keeps the StarShoot AutoGuider securely in-place during long imaging sessions. Once you’ve positioned the StarShoot AutoGuider at the ideal focus point, the included aluminum parfocal ring makes it easy to quickly repeat perfect focus results from one imaging session to the next. The dovetail guide scope bracket fits in any standard Orion dovetail finder scope base and omits the need for a piggyback oriented guide scope system which can be a hassle to install and balance. Three adjustment thumbscrews on the bracket allow easy and precise aiming of the guide scope. An included dovetail mounting base and attachment hardware lets you install the Magnificent Mini AutoGuider on any telescope optical tube, in case you want to install it on a telescope that already has a finder scope, or on a telescope without a dovetail base. The included adapter plate lets you mount the Magnificent Mini AutoGuider dovetail base to most standard dovetail plates for piggybacking on top of your imaging telescope’s tube rings, or for use in a side-by-side plate or saddle.

With a total weight of just 1.3 lbs (20.4 oz.), the Orion Magnificent Mini AutoGuider package adds minimal mass to astrophotography setups, making it easy to add autoguiding accuracy to your images without adding the bulk of older and larger guide scopes. Buy the affordable Magnificent Mini AutoGuider package today and find out just how magnificent your own astrophotographs can be!

I unpacked the autoguider and scope and plugged in the cables. MaxImDL recognized the guider. I selected a 1 second continuous exposure for my camera, centered a star in the crosshair at 400% and started the guider. After 20 minutes the star was still centered in the crosshairs and the guiding log showed a continuous stream of corrections of < .2 , often < .05 in both X & Y. Very smooth.
Pros: value for the price.
Yes, I recommend this product!

Pairing the Star Shoot AutoGuider with the Mini Guide scope seems like a great idea until...
1. You discover that the drivers will not install properly on a Windows 7 64-bit machine.
2. You discover that the "Autoguiding" solution - according to step 2, page 11 of the SSAG instructions says "Use a low power eyepiece on your guidescope..." but it is not possible to use an eyepiece on the paired guidescope unless you purchase 1.25" extension tubes. In fact, based on my calculations, no solution that Orion has will solve the problem of using an eyepiece with the mini-scope because the barrel of the guidescope is too short and the shortest available extension tubes (or a diagonal) will move the focal distance TOO far.
3. There is more than one PHD solution on the CD that is provided with the SSAG (PHD Guiding and PHD Planetary) and thus the printed instructions are mismatched with the actual CD content.
4. There is no "readme" on the CD to explain the difference or provide additional hints or the latest information (e.g. a replacement for the clearly out of date instructions).
It would seem the same CD that is available for the "StarShoot Planetary Imaging Camera and Autoguider" is being included in this solution.
In short, for me the solution does not work "out of the box" and can't be used in the manner described in the instructions. It will obviously require more tinkering (and expense) to get the solution working.
The FAQs don't seem to hold the solution to the problem. Using the "Update Driver" and pointing the tool at the location where SSPIAG_Drivers are installed doesn't seem to work.
Cons: instructions don't match, failed to install on win 64bit, can't use eyepiece with guidescope
No, I do not recommend this product.

I received the autoguider and guide scope on time according to the shipping label. The software installed without any problems and everything connected with ease. I live in the city with trees, so I did a two star alignment with my CG-5 mount then started the guide program. I used the "on camera" mount with the "auto select star" then I "enabled the graph". I had to go to the brain and increase the max dec duration to 2000 but that is because of my mount wanting to drift. I was able to guide 90 seconds in the city with excellent results and 3 minutes in a "so called" dark area right out of town. This guider is well worth the money.
