Now you can discover the joy of taking gorgeous 16-bit pictures of deep space phenomena without spending an arm and a leg with the value-packed Orion StarShoot G3 Deep Space Color Imaging Camera! Our third generation affordable entry-level Orion StarShoot Deep Space Imaging Camera lets you take beautiful astrophotos without emptying your wallet, providing an ideal entry into astrophotography for any amateur astronomer.

The Orion StarShoot G3 Deep Space Color Imaging Camera has been totally redesigned with performance enhancing features and software that until now have been reserved for much more expensive CCD imagers. Built around the popular Sony interline ICX419AKL color CCD chip, which boasts a 752 x 582 pixel array with sensitive, 8.6 micron by 8.3 micron pixels, the StarShoot G3 is capable of detecting fine details in celestial objects. This bigger, 1/2" format CCD sensor usually isn’t available in cameras priced as low as the StarShoot G3, and it provides a much larger imaging field of view than cameras equipped with 1/3” format chips so you can shoot more sky in far less time.

The StarShoot G3 Deep Space Color Imaging Camera is the only camera in its price range to feature regulated thermoelectric cooling (TEC). Regulated thermoelectric cooling significantly improves astrophoto quality and reduces noise by enabling accurate dark frame acquisition. This regulated “cooling” feature is usually only found in much pricier cameras, and makes the StarShoot G3 a truly amazing value. The on-board TEC can cool the StarShoot G3 to a brisk 10°C below ambient temperature so that noise is minimized in dark frames and exposures. The StarShoot G3 even features a small, vibration-free fan which assists the TEC to remove warm air and further optimize imaging results. These cooling features are usually only found on imaging cameras priced up to four times more expensive than the Orion StarShoot G3!

Seen below is a split-view taken from two different 180 second dark frames displaying the exact same pixel brightness range. As seen with the TEC on, the StarShoot G3’s cooling system reduces the number of hot pixels and overall noise in the image.

TEC on/off Dark Frame Comparison

The Orion StarShoot G3 Deep Space Color Imaging Camera is capable of downloading a full frame image in approximately 2 seconds. A convenient subframe downloading feature allows for even speedier results. The StarShoot G3 has a wide exposure range so you can take extensive exposures of wispy deep space objects and then capture a quick snapshot of the Moon during the same imaging session.

Complete astrophotography imaging software is included with the StarShoot G3. Orion Camera Studio software makes it easy to control image capture through the camera, save results, process images, and share with family and friends! ASCOM drivers are also included for the Orion StarShoot G3 Deep Space Color Imaging Camera, allowing use with a number of other popular image processing programs, such as Nebulosity, ImagesPlus, and more.

Orion Camera Studio Software for StarShoot G3

The versatile Orion StarShoot G3 can also be used as a dedicated autoguider, with a direct ST-4 output conveniently built right into the camera body. Use the StarShoot G3 as a high-performance, low-noise 16-bit CCD autoguider with a high-end CCD imaging camera or DSLR attached to your imaging telescope for especially accurate tracking and precise results. Included ASCOM drivers allow you to use your choice of autoguiding software with the StarShoot G3, such as PHD Guiding, when using the camera as an autoguider. Autoguiding software is not included with the Orion StarShoot G3 Color Deep Space Imaging Camera.

The Orion StarShoot G3 Deep Space Color Imaging Camera comes with a removable 1.25” nosepiece for easy attachment to virtually any telescope focuser. The nosepiece is threaded for use with 1.25” Orion imaging filters so you can easily enhance your images. Removing the 1.25” nosepiece reveals a built-in 2” nosepiece with standard T-threads for secure coupling of the camera to your imaging telescope and/or astrophotography accessories.

Measuring just 3.4” in diameter with a depth of 1.85”, the compact Orion StarShoot G3 Deep Space Color Imaging Camera won’t take up much space in your accessory case, and its small size makes it a great candidate for use with Fastar and Hyperstar imaging systems. The camera weighs just 12 oz. so whether it’s used as an imaging camera or autoguider, it will keep your astrophotography setup lean and mean.

The StarShoot G3 Deep Space Color Imaging Camera connects to your computer via its USB 2.0 connection, and a 10’ USB cable is included. A 10’ auto-lighter power cable is also included to provide 12V DC power to the on-board cooling TEC when needed. The USB 2.0 connection provides enough power to the camera for non-cooled operation or for use as an autoguider. External power is only required for TEC operation.

The Orion StarShoot G3 Deep Space Color Imaging Camera is our most affordable 16-bit, cooled CCD imaging camera. In fact, it’s one of the most affordable feature-packed cameras available to astrophotographers today!

Summary:
Good starter camera for those getting into astrophotography and wanting a CCD camera set up. Integrated colour is a plus for those not wanting the extra expense of purchasing filters. If you already have 1.25" or 2" filters then the monochrome camera might be a better choice. Included software works well for image capture but plan on finding a different software package for image processing.
Detailed Review:
I purchased the G3 Deep Space Colour Imaging Camera as a first CCD camera for astrophotograpy. I decided for the colour version as I didn't want the expense of purchasing a variety of filters. Having not done astrophotgraphy before I was looking for something simple that worked out of the box and overall the camera performs well against these expectations. It has a standard 1.25" interface but can also be set up for 2". I've had a few issues with the USB interface "turning off" but un-plugging then re-plugging the USB cord at the camera seems to fix this issue. This only occurred during a "marathon" 10 hour shooting session. In shooting sessions of 3-4 hours I did not encounter this issue. Image quality seems good with moderate noise, so appropriate Dark frames are a must to get the best picture quality with this camera.
Where the camera lacks is the interface software provided by Orion. I've installed the software on a MacBook Pro running a bootcamp version of Win 7 64 bit. I have yet to run the software where it doesn't encounter at least one error. The software is simple to use for image capture and, for my purposes provides enough functionality to be useful without being overwhelming. The interface is very minimal and may provide heartache for those used to a more robust interface. The camera has a few issues when taking looping short duration exposures (i.e., a few seconds in length), in particular image transfer/buffering and CCD cooling. However, the software has settings that enable you to overcome these issues.
Where the software really fails is image processing. I have yet to successfully process image using this product and consistently receive error messages when using the image processing functionality. Additionally, the minimal interface makes it very difficult to effectively manipulate/manage more than 5 images at a time, which is especially annoying when you encounter a software error and have to start over from the beginning. Lastly, there is no online help or tooltips making image processing a guessing game when you venture beyond the defaults. I've already started looking at alternative software packages to process images. Note that images from the G3 are saved in FITs format (apparently a common scientific file format) that isn't supported by the more commonly available image processing packages such as Adobe's Photoshop or Apple's Aperture. However, the little I've been able to see of semi-processed images using the provided software has made me quite pleased with the image quality from the camera.
Favorite object to observe:??Messier Objects
Pros: good starter camera, color means no need for filters, image capture process simple
Cons: image processing software lacking, software lacks robust help or user guide, software errors frequently
Yes, I recommend this product!

I am writing this review after only one night of imaging, and after owning it only 2 days. This software installed with no problems, I had one question about Loop viewing live images, which Orion helped me out, and that same evening I was out with the Starshoot G3 and took both RGB, RAW image files of deep sky objects for about 4 hours. There are a lot of really nice features on this camera which make it a great value- remote controlled cooling, excellent sensor, ease of use. I have to say I was amazed at the images I captured in the first 2 hours with this imager. For the money, it cannot be beat. It is built well, metal case with very nice finish, high quality ports and cables, The cooling fan is ultra quiet and produces no vibration at all. This is my first Orion product, and I have to say it gets a 9 out of 10. I am really happy with it and glad I bought it.
Favorite viewing location:??Arizona
Favorite object to observe:??Nebulae, DSO's clusters, galaxies.
Pros: quality construction, quiet vibration free cooler, better than expected, fantastic performance, fit and finish
Cons: manual needs to be just a little better.
Yes, I recommend this product!

Unfortunately, my telescope was not of sufficient power to justify the use of this camera. I am having much better luck with digiscoping than I did with thiis camera. I also found the lack of real-time focusing to be more than I could handle. I returned the camera for a refund.

Being an avid astron video person i wanted to dive into basic imagain. I picked up the G3 because of my luck with Orion products and the sensitivity of the CCD chip. The camera hooks up great and runs quiet. the software is a drag though. the manual is ok but it leaves out the all important information on how to view in COLOR. it tells you to switch to a color mode BUT it forgets to tell you that you must select and alter the pixel axis so the elements in the CCD are aligned to produce color. it sounds compkicated and it is...too complicated to deal with all the time. move on to the next option!!
No, I do not recommend this product.
Response from OrionBy??Tech Support,??December 8, 2011
A software update to version 1.1.0 and a revised manual have been released. They are available as a free download on the product support page for each G3 camera. Default settings now provide improved color balance and the color conversion process has been simplified; among other improvements designed to make use of the camera more enjoyable.
