Tired of using a separate guide telescope for astro-imaging? Our new Orion Deluxe Off-Axis Guider lets you image and guide with the same telescope! This streamlined solution will reduce setup time, save weight on your telescope mount and eliminate any tracking problems associated with mirror shift or tube flexure.

Works best with Orion StarShoot AutoGuider and StarShoot cameras, as well as Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras. Accommodates most imaging cameras and telescopes with sufficient inward focus travel (59mm required). May require additional threaded adapters for use with some models of Schmidt-Cassegrain (SCT) telescopes. Not recommended for reflector telescopes due to their limited focus travel.

I purchased this a couple months ago and have used it quite a bit since I got it. I haven't had any problems with sturdiness or anything else - it's very, very adjustable and allowed me to get my guide camera and DSLR to focus at the same time easily and simply. I have used a guide scope for a couple years and the results with this are signficantly better. A great product.

I purchased this Off-Axis Autoguider from Orion back in April of 2011. Because of time, weather, work...etc, I never installed it until this past weekend (2/19/12). I was worried because of other reviews about a long drawn out battle with getting both cameras to focus properly. The camera used is the Atik 450C and the guide camera is the Orion SSAG. From beginning to finish, I had this up and running in 45 minutes. First, I will comment on the quality of the Orion OAG, which is excellent, mostly metal construction with some ABS plastic as well. It looks and feels solid with no points of flexture. I attached both cameras using only the 17mm extension for the Atik camera (no extension on the Orion SSAG). and was only about 2-3mm from getting the Orion SSAG focused with the Atik. I then backed the Atik camera out about 3mm and locked it down with the rotation lock ring. This did the trick. The Atik camera is perfectly focused and the SSAG is close enough to perfect focus for me not to worry about it. Since the Atik 450 and the Orion SSAG are very close in their backfocus range, this was relatively easy to setup. I can see how it would take more time if the back focus between the two cameras were further apart.
So far, so good. The Off-Axis guider is working well on my Explore Scientific 80mm APO. I purchased this off-axis guider to help me get started on the process of getting away from using a seperate guide scope when using my imaging refractors and thus eliminating flexture which materialized in the form of "potato stars." This off-axis guider has done this already with 4.5 hours of 5 minute subs. This is a well made and well thought-out product. I do recommend it highly. I also recommend knowing the back-focus on the cameras you choose to use, which will be helpful in measuring the distance you'll have to achieve for focusing both cameras. A bit of patience goes a long way.

I hated this guider until I got it set up correctly. I spent at least 5 nights (3+ hours each night) fiddling with it and fine tuning. But now all that is done it is a good autoguding system. I'm getting 10 minute subs at ease and have goofed around andgotten 20 minutes with no problem (20 minutes is impractical given my sub urban location). There are 2 potential problems with this setup...1) getting it focused and 2) finding a guide star. 1) you can save yourself a lot of time doing this during the daytime. Pick a target a few hundred yards away and make sure your scope and the guide camera are BOTH in focus. If both the guide camera and imaging camera are in focus tighten everything down (or super glue it, seriously...) getting focus is half the battle... 2) Finding guide stars isn't fun...I can usually fine at least one but several times I have to abandon targets because there is no guide star available. M104 is a good example. I really didn't like this product until I got it fine tuned but now I really really like it. Works very well. ... Barrett in Texas

First time I used this guider I attached both guide camera and CCD to this device. when I picked it up the guide camera housing came off (two hex screws holding it are not recessed and can't grip) I lost the pin that moves the pick mirror, as it flew off some place and almost lost my camera's which I caught before they hit the ground. Save yourself the money and buy the more expensive unit.
