When you want close-up views of distant objects, but have limited space for optical gear, a quality monocular is your best bet. Sometimes, a binocular or spotting scope is simply too large and cumbersome to bring along on family trips to the beach, sports games, or on camping excursions to scenic locations. The Orion 10x42 Waterproof Monocular is conveniently compact and portable, so you can enjoy magnified views of distant wildlife, birds, scenery, sporting events, and even the Moon without packing a lot of bulky equipment. What’s more, its rugged, rubber-armored body and waterproof construction make the Orion 10x42 Monocular ideal for use in virtually any weather conditions.

The Orion 10x42 Waterproof Monocular is advantageously small in size, but it provides big optical performance thanks to its 42mm aperture objective lens and quality BK-7 roof prism. All optical surfaces of the 10x42 Waterproof Monocular are fully multi-coated to ensure maximum light throughput so you can enjoy bright, vivid views, even in low-light conditions during dusk and pre-dawn hours. The monocular’s wide 5.9° field of view provides a nicely sized “window” with 10x power magnification, so it’s easy to track moving target objects during use. But what if that bird you’re looking at decides to land on the very tree you’re standing under? Not to worry – the Orion 10x42 Monocular features an amazing near focus distance of just 20 inches – more than adequate for viewing even extremely close-by quarry with 10x power magnification.

Eyeglass wearers will appreciate the Orion 10x42 Waterproof Monocular’s comfortable, 17mm long eye relief, as it allows you to leave corrective lenses on during use. For those who don’t wear glasses, or who prefer to remove them when using optical instruments, the 10x42 Monocular features a twist-up rubber eyeguard to help properly position your eye to take in the entire field of view comfortably.

A removable carrying strap is included for convenient hanging of the monocular around your neck during hikes, walks, or climbing sessions. For extended use, the Orion 10x42 Waterproof Monocular features a small tripod adapter socket, allowing attachment to any field or photographic tripod featuring a 1/4"-20 threaded post.

Nice instrument, good value for the money. Quality optics, bright images...nice rubberized non-slip housing. Focus works very well, but not immediately intuitively obvious as to how to do it. Very portable, light-weight. Would buy one again for sure. Recommended if you want a light-weight travel-friendly telescope.

I compared the brightness of this 10x42 monocular to my decades-old Swift 8x30 monocular - and it is noticeably less bright. It is barely brighter than looking through one barrel of a Pentax 8.5x21 binocular. Nevertheless it's a good value for the money and optically fairly sharp, just don't think you're getting top quality!

This is a good idea, and the optical performance is good. However, the mechanical execution is poor.

The idea of having a coarse and a fine focus in order to cover a very wide range of distances is exactly what I needed for a special application. The ability to focus as close as about 50 cm is the reason I bought it as an optical instrument.
Unfortunately, the motion as delivered was sticky and unsatisfactory. Sometimes the focus functions (both of them) work well, but in some positions, they jam, and more force is needed to get past that position. Then the focus jumps when the resistance is overcome. After exercising the fine focus quite a bit, its motion became smoother, but the coarse focus still tends to bind at one place. The primary reason for binding of the coarse focus is friction between the external rotating cylinder and its neighboring, external parts. Unscrewing the front part of the monocular a small fraction of a turn gets around the problem, but that is not a solution to a problem of assembly tolerances.
Bottom line: Useful optical device, but mechanical construction leaves something to be desired.
Pros: wide focal range, close focus
Cons: poor assembly
