No need to plunk down thousands of dollars for a portable apochromatic refractor. Just choose Orion's 80mm ED at well under $1000 — and choose the new .085x reducer-flattener designed to couple with it for shorter exposure times and brighter images.

It's the easy way to get better images from your Orion 80mm ED Apo Refractor telescope. The new Reducer-Flattener reduces the effective focal length to create shorter exposure times that result in better, brighter images.

This is designed exclusively for use with the 80mm ED and optimized for photography with DSLR cameras. The reducer-flattener features three-element optical assembly and is fully multicoated.

The Reducer-Corrector threads onto the focuser drawtube's male threads for a secure fit that will not introduce flexure. T-threads on the camera side accept your camera's T-ring. You will need a "wide" T-ring for your brand of camera, sold separately.

This is a 'must-have' accessory for quality astrophotography with Orion's ED80. Great for daytime terrestrial photography also!

I have owned an Orion ED80 APO for three years and have used the scope to take many descent astro photos. However, there have always been slightly elongated stars in the corners of my image frame. I bought the Orion 0.85 reducer-corrector and, wow, whata difference. Not only have the elongated stars disappeared, but I have been able to capture more light in my astro photos, and in turn reduce exposure times for photographng dimmer objects such as the blue nebula gas in M45 and the Rosette Nebula. Great product Orion.

The build and quality of this focal reducer are second to none. That being said, you have to realize that you will only be able to use it with two unique and destinctive items. You have to have an Orion 80ED and you have to have "WIDE" 48mm T-thread (I'm not sure I should use "T" since its not actually the actual T standard) items. Orion sells the only "Wide" T-ring for a varity of cameras so its not so bad but it would be nice if they made an adapter to allow this to be used with Standard T-mount items and if they made a barrel for the opposite side to allow this to work on other scopes with a 2" focuser. Its good if you have a "Wide" t-ring and if you have an Orion 80ED but that's pretty much all you can use it for. Function wise, if you have the two mentioned items, its pretty awesome! It really reduces the amount of exposure on your favorite subjects.
Favorite viewing location:??Home
Favorite object to observe:??Orion Nebula
Pros: excellent build, great value, provides a wide field, lowers exposure time needed
Cons: only works with the 80ed, has non-standard threads, no known adapters to covert to standard threads
No, I do not recommend this product.

Orion ED80 Reducer-Corrector on a Vixen ED80

When taking astro-photos with a DSLR through my ED 80mm telescope I would get very elongated stars around all four sides of the photo. I tried a couple field flatteners I own with little or no improvement, so when Orion came out with their focal reducer-corrector I was very interested in trying one out, but because it was designed for the Orion ED80mm telescope and my scope is a Vixen ED80mm I was some what hesitant. After thinking about it for a couple of months, and taking into consideration the Orion and Vixen are both f/7.5 scopes, I ordered the focal reducer. My first shots with the new Orion focal reducer were of M31, and the results were impressive to say the least. I had to view the photos at 100% full size before I could detect any elongated stars, and they were only slightly elongated, and confined to the very edge of the corners. For me the Orion focal reducer was a good investment
