Whoever coined the phrase "big things come in small packages", would have definitely applied that expression to the OrionStarMax 90 TableTop Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope. This ultra-compact Maksutov-Cassegrain gives surprisingly big views for an instrument of its modest size, making it an elegant first telescope or a pleasantly portable grab-and-go second telescope!

The long, 1250mm focal length (f/13.8) gives the StarMax 90 TableTop telescope some serious magnifying power — the included 25mm and 10mm 1.25" 3-element eyepieces yield powers of 50x and 125x magnification, respectively. The 90mm diameter Maksutov-Cassegrain optical tube collects over 25% more light than its GoScope 80 refractor cousin, and up to 225% more light than a traditional beginner’s 60mm refractor telescope. With the advantage of additional aperture, you’ll be able to enjoy excellent, detailed views of planetary delights such as lunar landscapes, Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s moons through the Orion StarMax 90mm TableTop Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope. As you scan the Milky Way, you’ll also be able to pull in sparkling open and globular star clusters, as well as a bright nebula or two.

The optical tube assembly of the Orion StarMax 90mm TableTop Mak-Cass Telescope is attached to a stable table-top swivel base, via a quick-release dovetail mount with adjustable altitude tension. The Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope tube can easily be removed from the table-top base to be mounted on an optional photo tripod. The small swivel base itself can also be mounted on a camera tripod with a 3/8" screw, in case there isn’t a table near your preferred observing location.

The StarMax 90mm TableTop Maksutov-Cassegrain comes with a lot of great accessories so you can make the most out of each evening under the stars. An included Orion EZ Finder II red-dot reflex sight lets you aim the 90mm telescope with ease. The Maksutov-Cassegrain’s smooth-adjusting internal focuser is a joy to use. The included 90° mirror star diagonal yields bright images and provides a convenient right-angle viewing orientation for comfortable night sky viewing. This compact, yet surprisingly capable, Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope weighs in at just 6.4 lbs. including the diagonal, one eyepiece, and reflex sight device, making it nice and easy for anyone in the family to transport.

I considered buying a less expensive table top scope but decided on this one because I felt the optics would be superior to the optics of the other choices. After looking at Jupiter, the Orion Nebula and the Pleiades, I believe I made the right choice. I think of this scope as the Mak-Cass version of the "Classic Dobsonian Reflectors. It comes packaged in a box with handles. The scope fits in this box fully assembled. That means that on a cold night I can set it in the box, close it up and carry it inside with one hand. The box protects it from moisture condensation till it warms up. This makes a quick observing session convenient and practical. It' a nice little unit....Bill

This was my first telescope. I cannot say I was disappointed with what I was able to view thru the telescope. The view of the moon was amazing and I was easily able to locate and view Saturn, Venus, Jupiter, and even Mars. I was unable to locate any Deep Sky objects but this was probably just my inexperience. The portability of this telescope was great as well as it only weighs 6.5 lbs. and is easily stored and taken outside for viewing the sky on a whim. The EZ Finder II finder scope worked relatively well it had no problems lining up with the moon or stars but the planets were a little more difficult especially Mars. The problems I had with this telescope were all centered around the mount. The mount is wooden and not very sturdy and even wobbly. This made tracking planets and making fine adjustments very difficult. The mount was unsteady enough that it fell off the table it was on and dropped about 2 feet to the ground. Luckily the telescope itself wasn't damaged but the mount easily broke in half. Since there is no replacement mount to purchase I will now have to purchase a tripod for this telescope which eliminates one of the greatest benefits of this telescope (portability). In addition, the free Starry Night Special Edition software that came with the telescope is corrupted and will not install so I had to request a replacement from Simulation Curriculum Corp. Lastly a few days after I purchased the telescope Orion dropped the price by $20. The saying "You get what you pay for comes to mind" if I had to do it over again I would spend more money and get a sturdier telescope. Only buy this product if you plan to get it with the tripod bundle.
Favorite viewing location:??Driveway
Favorite object to observe:??The Moon & Saturn
Pros: optics, portability
Cons: fragile wooden mount, corrupted software
No, I do not recommend this product.

I'm a first-time buyer on a budget and an apartment dweller, so I chose this telescope based on its price and size. I'm very impressed with the telescope itself; the optical quality is very nice, and it performed equally well as a lunar / planetary viewer and as a terrestrial scope.
Unfortunately, I was not happy with the included EZ-Finder, which stopped working after its first use, although I was able to coax it into working again for a bit later in the viewing session. I will probably replace that piece with a higher-quality one soon.
Overall, though, I am extremely happy with this telescope. From a light-polluted apartment balcony, I was able to get excellent views of Saturn, Mars, and Venus. For a first-timer, it's pretty close to perfect, and had the EZ-Finder not been a hassle, this would have been a five-star rating.
Favorite viewing location:??Balcony
Favorite object to observe:??Saturn
Pros: clarity, ease of use, size and weight
Cons: ez-finder flimsy and touchy
Yes, I recommend this product!

What a sweet telescope! It was easy to assemble (minimal assembly) and comes with excellent documentation. Easy as can be to calibrate with the red dot finder, and in no time you're looking as the heavens. Comes with Starry Night software, which, once you figure out how to get it installed (requires ASCOM platform installed first), is awesome! Great value, really like it.
Pros: light easy to transport, easy to calibrate
Yes, I recommend this product!
