The bright face of our planet's Moon has been inspiring astronomers for centuries. Since the Moon is much closer to Earth than any other object in the night sky, views of its illuminated surface are amazingly detailed when observed through binoculars or a telescope. Intriguing craters, craggy mountains, and vast "seas" of ancient lava flows make for wonderful targets for backyard astronomers. With the affordable Orion MoonMap 260, you can easily identify, locate and learn about the many interesting features of Earth's only natural satellite.
For finding your way around the starry sky, there's no better tool than a star wheel, also called a planisphere, like the Orion StarTarget Planisphere. Whether you're skywatching with just your eyes, with binoculars, or with a telescope, a planisphere star chart is an essential tool you'll use time and time again. It's an invaluable reference tool for learning the constellations, identifying stars, and locating popular bright celestial objects such as galaxies, open and globular star clusters, and diffuse and planetary nebulas.
We are able to see the Moon at night thanks to sunlight reflecting off its rocky surface. When looking at the Moon through a telescope, bright reflected sunlight can produce significant glare. The Moon's disk, even at partial phases, is in fact so intensely bright with reflected sunlight that observing surface details can be challenging due to the overwhelming glare. This glare can be so bright that it washes out most of the interesting lunar features such as craters, rilles, mountains, and valleys.
