For anything more than casual use you need a tripod that's very stable, strong enough to withstand some serious abuse, and yet moves with fluid smoothness. Orion's Paragon professional tripods fill the bill, providing heavy-duty support for giant binoculars, cameras, spotting scopes, and telescopes such as the Orion ShortTube 80, Orion Apex 90, 102 and 127, Orion GrandView, Orion Arcadia, and Orion Resolux and Orion GiantView binoculars.

The Paragon-Plus XHD tripod is constructed almost exclusively of aluminum, making it stronger at key stress points where other tripods fail. It features large, adjustable aluminum-tube legs with ridged helical locks. The legs are tri-braced to the center elevator housing for extra stability. The tripod is tall when fully extended, putting binoculars easily at eye level for most people.

This extra heavy-duty tripod holds heavier loads. Tube legs 1-1/4" max. dia.; each leg laterally braced with dual 3/4" aluminum tubes. Elevator shaft 1-1/8" dia., 11-3/4" travel. Height fully extended 67"; folds to 34". Weighs 9 lbs.

The Orion Paragon-Plus XHD tripod comes with a two-way fluid-type pan head. It features tension adjustment knobs on both axes for wonderfully smooth, controlled motion. The pan head can be raised or lowered on its aluminum rack-and-pinion elevator post with a hinged hand crank. Panning is easy with the 11"-long adjustable handle. The quick-release 1/4"-20 dovetail shoe makes attaching and detaching your instrument from the pan head a snap. Other nice features include convertible cushion/spike feet and built-in bubble level. This Orion model comes with its own case.

The Paragon-Plus XHD is a workhorse tripod with excellent stability and nice features for various adjustments. I use it for my Canon 50D SLR and have to say that it is very rugged and rigid. I am hoping to use it for my Orion telescope also.
Yes, I recommend this product!

This is a very good tripod. It will offer a lot of flexibility for observing using both binoculars and small, lightweight, telescopes. It has satisfied my expectations. I appreciate the call I received from your tech team advising me on the technique to remove the pan head. I'm now planning to buy the Paragon Bino Mount and removing the Pan Head is required to do this. I want the flexibility of using either the Pan Head or the Bino Mount.
I will note that the bubble level is not accurate. When it shows level, it is actually tilted. I also noted a "cam-out" fault in the slot of the screw which holds the quick release lever. However; lever works fine.
I would recommend this tripod for those who need to stabilize small optical instruments and who haven't reached the point of requiring "go to" features.

For the price, this tripod is hard to beat. You get a fluid head and a pretty sturdy tripod that can support fairly heavy scopes. Name brand tripods and heads that support the same weight as the Paragon will run you $200 more.
That being said, the low price does come with some tradeoffs. First, there is play in the handle which I took care of by injecting some epoxy putty into where the handle meets the head. Second, the head of one of my Paragons leaked after my kids played with my tripod head. This resulted in viscous fluid coating my head and I'm not sure whether a replacement can be ordered (unlike the Manfrottos and other name brands of the world).

Pros: very good value
Cons: head leaks, some play in handle
