Mfg Model #  10104

The VersaGo II HD is a wonderfully simple and practical "grab-and-go" altazimuth mount for terrestrial and casual celestial viewing with small to medium-size telescopes. Its affordable price belies its smart design, simple elegance, and sturdy, metal construction. It is a great mount for anyone seeking a stable, uncomplicated telescope platform that is nicely portable.

The VersaGo II HD differs from the standard VersaGo II in having a heavier duty tripod that features 1.75"-diameter tubular legs made of chromed steel. While both mounts can support the same load, the HD model is your best choice for absolute stability when using telescopes weighing close to the mount's 15-lb. capacity.

The mount features a sturdy, die-cast metal single-arm altazimuth head that allows simple and intuitive up-down, left-right operation. Teflon thrust bearings on both axes ensure smooth, fluid gliding motion and oversize tensioning knobs and a rubber grip panning handle provide extremely fine positioning and control, even for tracking moving subjects.

Because the laterally offset mounting arm places the telescope center of gravity over the center of the tripod and not off to the side, the VersaGo II HD offers maximum stability for spotting scopes, small astronomical refractors up to 120mm, Cassegrains and short reflectors up to 6" in aperture, or DSLR and video cameras. No counterweights are needed. The slanted arm design allows telescopes to point directly to the zenith.

A dovetail saddle allows quick mounting and removal of your telescope. The cast metal tripod spreader doubles as an accessory tray and has holes to accommodate 1.25" telescope eyepieces.

The VersaGo II HD weighs only 18.5 lbs., and the adjustable height tripod legs can be folded inward for easy transport. Just grab it and go! Total mount length is 47.5" with legs retracted and 63" when extended.

Why not simplify your viewing experience? Get the beefy but amply portable VersaGo II HD Mount today!

3 The Orion VersaGo II HD Altazimuth Mount is a great grab-and-go tripod for small to medium sized telescopes. Like the original VersaGo it has a load capacity of 15lbs but it differs in that it has thicker more stable legs, making it much sturdier.

I've used this mount for most of the past summer, probably around 8-10 evenings. At first, it had a few qualities that were very disappointing. Firstly, balance. *There is no lock knob.* The big plastic knobs adjust tension in both axes, but they aren't designed to completely immobilize the mount. It works fine IF the mount is carefully balanced. Not just in the horizontal axis, but in the vertical as well. If you have a big finder scope or piggy-back camera riding right on top of your OTA, the mount WILL NOT be balanced vertically. . . it will want to point higher and higher in the sky as you increase the altitude. To counteract this, mount your accessories on the SIDE of the OTA or use counterweights in the vertical. And, swapping out heavy EP's can be a pain, but it can be done with some practice.
The second big problem was stiction. When I got the mount, it took too much force to move the tube with any sort of control. Keeping an object in the eyepiece at 200x was extremely difficult and frustrating - it was very ease to lose the object altogether. Two factors mitigate this. Firstly, the oroginal lube is very sticky and there is too much of it. It actually can exert a "backlash" on the bearings. Replace the lube. I used $2 generic "white lithium grease" from a hardware store and it's a big improvement. The second factor that reduced stiction was simply the fact that the bearings have "broken in." After about 4 evenings, I noticed that I can track any object (well, except a meteorite) at moderate to high power. In fact, I cancelled an order for a more expensive, geared mount because it isn't necessary.
The tripod legs are great. Very solid, stable, not too heavy. It's also easy to set up for an evening, take down, take apart for lubing, etc.
This mount has never given me problems with stability. I use it with a 100ed in Skywatcher trim.
The setting circles work, within reason. If you have a smartphone, there are many apps that provide the altitude and azimuth of many objects. Aligning the mount to the correct coordinates can often get the scope within the ballpark of what you are looking for. Like all manual setting circles, these are prone to error if the mount is not perfectly level. Also, the azimuth circle is the southern hemisphere version! It still works, but I had to disassemble the mount and flip the az circle ring. the coordinates now read upside down. (How did this happen?) Nonetheless, the manual setting circles are a very nice alternative to an expensive DSC or GOTO solutions.
I am probably going to upgrade to a guided mount, but will still keep this for short viewing sessions. If you understand the mount's limitations, you cannot go wrong for the price.
Favorite viewing location:??Driveway
Favorite object to observe:??Hunting the Messiers w/o electronics
Pros: great tripod, stable, easy setup and takedown, inexpensive, usable setting circles
Cons: balance is finicky, grease needs to be replaced, needs slow-mo controls., wrong hemisphere az circle!
Yes, I recommend this product!

I have found the VersaGo II to be almost useless as a mount for my medium apprature binoculars. I spent a good deal of time researching various mounts and the VersaGo as advertised seemed to be just right but it is not very stable and the locking mechanism is just not very reliable or robust. I still have it hoping I can find some use for it.

The steel tripod is excellent. Light yet sturdy and stable. The head, however, had some problems. The thread that accepts the long rod/handle was not properly threaded. I had to spend $6 to buy a tap to clean up the thread. Once I took the head apart, cleaned up the sticky grease and replaced it with some white lithium, it worked very smoothly. However, without slow-motion controls it is difficult to center and keep centered an object at very high power - anything over 100 with my Starmax 102. With slow-motion controls the unit would be outstanding.
