Exploring the universe with a computer-controlled "GoTo" telescope just got a whole lot cooler! Because now you can drive the telescope wirelessly right from your Apple iPhone or iPod touch! All you need is the Orion StarSeek astronomy app (available exclusively by download from the iTunes App Store) and the StarSeek Wi-Fi Telescope Control Module.

The StarSeek Wi-Fi module works by creating its own local wireless network, leveraging the Wi-Fi capability built into the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. When coupled to the serial port on your telescope’s GoTo mount, StarSeek Wi-Fi converts the Wi-Fi signal from the mobile device into serial commands used by the mount to drive the telescope automatically to any of more than 31,000 celestial objects in the StarSeek app’s database. You polar-align and initialize your telescope for GoTo operation using the standard procedures for your telescope. StarSeek works with all Orion motor-driven GoTo telescopes, including the Atlas EQ-G, Sirius EQ-G, StarSeeker GoTo and both SkyQuest XTg and XXg GoTo Dobsonian lines, as well as with many other GoTo telescope brands.

Nearly all GoTo-enabled telescopes use serial commands to drive their electronics. StarSeek Wi-Fi serves as a WiFi-to-serial adapter, plugging into the telescope mount’s serial (RS-232) port, which on some scopes is located on the mount itself and on others is found on the (cabled) GoTo hand controller. A short DB-9 serial cable compatible with Orion GoTo mounts is included with the StarSeek Wi-Fi. (The included cable will also connect to the serial cable supplied with many other brands of GoTo telescopes.) The local Wi-Fi network it sets up has a communication range of well over 100 feet, depending on conditions!

StarSeek Wi-Fi is not currently compatible with telescopes that utilize a USB interface. But we expect to offer a StarSeek Wi-Fi USB solution in the future.

Unlike Bluetooth devices, StarSeek Wi-Fi requires no pairing, and no special drivers. It uses standard TCP/IP networking protocols. Once powered on, StarSeek Wi-Fi creates its own 802.11 wireless network. By default, this is an open wireless network called "StarSeek Wi-Fi," but you can rename and secure it later on. Join this network from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and you’re good to go!

The StarSeek Wi-Fi module is compact, barely larger than an iPhone. It can be easily attached to your telescope’s mount or tripod with the included hook-and-loop adhesive strips. StarSeek Wi-Fi runs on four on-board AA batteries (not included), and has a typical battery life of 8 to 12 hours under continuous use. It can also be powered from a 12-volt DC field battery or an AC wall outlet. An AC (120V, 60Hz) power adapter and DC cable with cigarette-lighter plug are available from Orion.

Compatibility of the Orion StarSeek Wi-Fi Telescope Control Module

The StarSeek Wi-Fi Telescope Control Module and StarSeek iPhone apps are compatible with the Apple iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS, 3G, and original iPhone; iPad 2 and iPad, and iPod touch. Both the StarSeek Standard Edition and Pro Edition apps enable wireless control of the following Orion telescopes/mounts:

  • Atlas EQ-G
  • Sirius EQ-G
  • SkyView Pro GoTo
  • StarSeeker GoTo
  • SkyQuest XTg and XXg GoTo Dobsonians

Orion StarSeek Wi-Fi Telescope Control Module is also compatible with the following other brands of telescopes/mounts. Please note many of these telescopes/mounts will require either the RS-232 cable supplied by the manufacturer (often included with the mount) or a custom serial cable with correct pinout arrangement.

  • Astro-Physics GTO
  • Celestron NexStar 5/8, 5i/8i, GPS, SLT, SE
  • Celestron CGE, CGE Pro, CGEM, CPC, EdgeHD
  • Celestron Ultima 2000
  • Losmandy Gemini
  • Meade LX-200 Classic and GPS
  • Meade LX-90, ETX, LXD, LX-400 ACF with AutoStar controllers
  • Meade Magellan I and II
  • SkyWatcher mounts with SynScan controllers
  • Takahashi Temma 2
  • Vixen SkySensor 2000
  • ServoCAT, Argo Navis, Sky Commander, Losmandy DSC

The only models that do not work with the StarSeek Wi-Fi module are those that lack an RS-232 serial interface. Such models include:

  • iOptron SmartStar and MiniTower mounts with GOTONova controllers
  • Meade ETX-LS
  • Vixen mounts with StarBook controllers

These telescopes have USB interfaces, which cannot be physically connected to StarSeek Wi-Fi at the present time.

Take a giant leap into the future of telescope control! Point your GoTo telescope to any of thousands of celestial objects with a couple of taps on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Download the Orion StarSeek iPhone app from iTunes, and purchase the StarSeek Wi-Fi module. Then you’ll be all set to experience the night sky in a whole new — and much cooler — way!

I was a little frustrated by the initial delays in releasing this wireless device (Originally set for last spring) and finally got it this Xmas (2010). Unusually bad weather (for Arizona) kept me from trying it until today. Setup is easy, although I washoping to bypass the hand controller and connect directly to the Mount. You have to plug into the GPS slot on the hand controller, and since I sprang for the cost of a GPS device, I was not too happy about losing that capability. However, iPhone and iPad both provide the same capabilities, so there was no loss of functionality. Plug everything in as directed, switch the Starseek on, and the wireless network shows up immediately on any nearby wireless device. I have not tested distance yet, and have used the device within twenty feet of the iPad with no problems. What I like about the device is that you can use the iPad (or iPhone) to help pick out objects to view, then use them to center the 'scope on that object effortlessly. As with other viewing sessions, once the Orion Atlas mount is properly aligned, most objects were within the field of view with no searching, and only minor adjustments to center the object. The Starseek software is easy to use, works pretty well so far, and I've enjoyed this enough to expect to increase the number of times I view.

This device sets up an ad hoc local network, which your iPhone or iPad can connect with wirelessly. With a suitable piece of software such as COM2TCP, you can connect wireless to your laptop. You'll need the Orion Star Seek program (Plus or Max version) on your iPad or phone. But that program by itself is great! On your laptop you can use Sky Charts, Stellarium, or any other ASCOM-enabled program. I had no trouble getting the control module to work with the software, either on my iPad or my laptop. I'm running my control module with 4 rechargeable batteries. The only issue I had was that when I first powered it up, it wouldn't go into full transmit mode (green light). I had to connect it to a 12v source. After that any 6 v source was fine. You should be advised that the control module can also be operated from any Android device 2.2 or greater. For this you need to download the Sky Safari app from Southern Stars. However, there is one problem: unlike the iPhone and iPad, most Android devices do not support ad hoc networking natively, and to get this control module working on them you usually have to root the device and then download some software (which is readily available). Also, I found that the Android version of the Sky Safari program is much slower and jerker than the iPad version, which is buttery smooth--a real pleasure to use.

I like this device very much. I have a Celestron NexStar 8 SE and the Orion associate couldn't guarantee me they would work together right out of the box but THEY DO! On the app I went to Settings - Communication - Scope Type = Celestron NexStar GPS/SLT/SE (not NexStar 5/8 or 5i/8i). The module has a short phone-like cable that goes to the hand-controller. And within minutes I was able to drive my scope with my iPhone. I recommend practicing with the app and module during the day before going out at night. I also recommend update the app constantly, Settings - Solar System - Update Minor Body Orbit Data. I think both the app and the module are very cool and very useful. My 2 requests - I wish the app had Moon data and I wish the module had a better way to attach to the scope. But I consider those minor issues.
Favorite viewing location:??middle Tennessee

Pros: easy to use and very useful, very cool, i don't have to memorize night sky
Cons: a better way to mount to scope

Once you are up and running this product works great. But my XT12 go to Dob was not in the list of scopes in Sky Safari. So I kept trying Orion scopes until I found one that connected and it works fine now.
To connect to my Meade LX 90 I was glad I have the Meade serial cable, otherwise I would have needed to buy it.
When you get linked up it works very well. It is nice to be able to just point to an object on the screen and have the scope go to it.
Glad I bought it!
Favorite viewing location:??Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains
Favorite object to observe:??Clusters of all types
Pros: works as advertised
Cons: a bit of a learning curve, needs a cable to work with a meade lx 90
