You may not see little green guys with antennae, but you will resolve plenty of subtle features with this Orion Mars-optimized telescope filter set. It consists of three 1.25" glass filters in threaded aluminum cells:

  1. The custom-designed Orion Mars Observation filter enhances contrast of virtually all surface features. Dielectric coatings transmit violet/blue (< 505nm) and orange/red (> 615nm) wavelengths where detail is rich, while blocking overbearing yellow/green (515nm-615nm) wavelengths. Polar icecaps appear more sharply defined, and differences in landscape shading are nicely resolved. Polar hazes and cloud cover become visible. The filter's high transmission makes it effective even in small telescopes.
  2. The Blue #82A filter really "pops" the polar icecaps and nicely highlights polar hoods and clouds.
  3. The Orange #21 filter sharpens visibility of dark surface markings and polar regions. Surface dust storms become easily visible.
  4. Set includes 3-filter case.

The Mars filter worked fairly well, but seemed to be a little ambitious. The Orange filter worked great during the summer of 2010 to show surface detail, and the Blue filter was also great for enhancing the polar cap. TIP: in the old days, we used a Wratten #12 or #15 yellow filter to enhance the contrast of the Moon. If you can stand looking at a minty blue moon, instead of a yellow cheese moon, the 82A filter that comes with this set is a REAL bonus. It provides great contrast, AND it has a greater light transmission, which means a brighter image, especially important to users of smaller aperture telescopes. I really like this set, and consider it an added plus to my 1.25" planetary filter collection.

This is a good set. The blue is the best of the bunch to my eyes followed by the orange and pinkish mars filter. All offer some improvement, but for me the blue was best the polar caps and dark surface features. Stacking the blue and orange also produced a pretty good result.

Orion "Mars" filter disappoints. Blue, Orange OK

I used a 7" f/15 refractor to test the 3 filters. Mars was small, at 7.4 arc-secs, the seeing was 7 (10 scale), transparency about 4 (6 scale). The Orange #21 and the Blue#82A were most helpful to enhance albedo and polar features. I recommend them to Mars observers without reservation. However, the new "Mars" filter was a big disappointment. It failed to enhance much of anything, and the intense pink color was really off-putting.
