Nights under the stars will never be quite the same with the Orion Atlas 10 EQ-G GoTo Reflector Telescope. They’ll be much, much more rewarding. This scope’s huge 10" optics and precise, heavy-duty computerized GoTo mount will show you what big-telescope performance is all about.

It starts with the optics. The Atlas 10 EQ-G features an expertly figured 254mm (10") parabolic mirror with a 1200mm focal length (f/4.7) for big, very bright views. You’ll soon find yourself grinning ear to ear as your eyes take in beautifully bright views of elusive deep space objects that smaller aperture instruments simply cannot detect. Not to mention the breathtaking scenes the Orion Atlas 10 EQ-G GoTo Reflector will display of the Moon and planets of our solar system. The 2" Crayford-style focuser adjusts smoothly without backlash for precise performance and has a 1.25" adapter to accommodate either size of telescope eyepiece.  A 1.25" 25mm Sirius Plossl telescope eyepiece comes standard, as does a nice, bright 9x50 finder scope to help aim this colossal reflector telescope.

Then there’s the telescope mount. The capable Atlas EQ-G provides rock-solid stable support and computerized GoTo control, courtesy of dual internal stepper motors that slew the scope at up to 3.4° per second and track with exceptionally low periodic error. Using the handheld GoTo controller lets you visit any of over 42,000 celestial objects with pushbutton ease. The Atlas EQ-G mount features backlash compensation in both axes and programmable periodic error correction (PEC) to provide the precision required for astrophotographic guiding with a dedicated autoguider and there’s even an ST-4 autoguider port built right into the drive base. The adjustable-height Atlas tripod has large 2"-diameter stainless steel tubular legs, making for a highly sturdy support system.

You will need an external 12-volt DC power supply or an AC-to-DC adapter to run off of 110-volt AC, such as an Orion Dynamo Pro (sold separately).

For owners of the Atlas EQ-G GoTo Mount whose version of the GoTo hand controller is 3.0 or greater, the GoTo hand controller’s firmware can be updated over the internet.

I have owned several big name Schmidt Cassegrain telescopes over the last 25+ years. And now I am free. This Newtonian offers improved contrast and clarity (fewer reflecting/refracting surfaces). The mount is very substantial and silky smooth. I can also mount other OTA's on the mount as time and money allow. This is a great value and a wonderful intermediate instrument.

Took this telescope with me to Oman and used it on a few star gazing trips and Astronomy club camping trips. I purchaced the soft cases for it. I recommend some kind of case. I wish, for the money, that some kind of trunk was provided like Schmidt Cassegrains get. Also, I have found that this scope is pretty much at the operational weight limit of the autoguider/EQ-G mount. Forget having large piggy back cameras and autoguiding gear. The scope will be too heavy to complete a 3 star alignment without slewing errors. It will handle a CCD camera just fine and perhaps a short tube autoguider if you only need 1 star alignments. The reflector mirror is too far away from the primary (primary focal point is too deep inside the telecsope) to be able to use a digital SLR with a T-mount. I have heard that there are rebuild tweaks to improve the mount's slewing errors due to it's weight limits for accessories. I have not tried these yet. I'm looking at trying to find a focal extender so I can use my Pentax DSLR on it. That said... It's an impressive scope for everything else. It's the center piece of any star party just because it looks so dang impressive when it's fully assembled and ready to go. You need a Kia Sportage or larger vehicle to move it. (it fits the sportage perfectly). Before I sold my Sportage to move back to the US, I actually thought about laying down a thick layer of pick-n-pluck cube foam in the bottom of my sportage and turning the sportage into a shipping trunk for my telescope because it was such a perfect fit for everything. Don't expect to pack it any distance from your vehicle. It is monsterously heavy. The autoguider weights as much as a boat motor and it's justs as awkward to carry when mounted on the tripod. You also need a 12v power supply for the autoguider.
Favorite viewing location:??Farm in Hearne, TX
Favorite object to observe:??Orion Nebula
Pros: impressive mechanical quality, fantastic image quality., great value.
Cons: at it's weight limit on the autoguider., dslr will not work with it.

My daughter picked me up an Orion SpaceProbe 130ST EQ Reflector a couple of years ago, which I purchased almost all of the accessories for. It wasn't long until I wanted more! I was almost set to get the Orion Sirius 8 EQ-G GoTo Reflector when I realized that I would be back for the 10 inch in a year or two so I ordered the Orion Atlas 10 EQ-G GoTo Reflector. One of the first things that I did was to take a picture of the telescope with my wife standing next to it, it is big! I've had it out twice, the first time was for some adjustments and some solar observations (I picked up a solar filter also, since we're coming into the solar maximum). The second time was during the night with a friend that has an old Questar. We were both pretty impressed with the optics and how the Go To performed. There were times when we had to stand on a milk crate to look through the eyepiece. We were observing from the suburbs east of Seattle, WA so the sky was pretty lit up from the neighboring cities. I can't wait to get this scope somewhere dark. Hopefully the weather tomorrow will stay clear so I can go up to Washington Pass on Highway 20 (a mile high and some of the darkest sky??????s in Washington state). I've already started to make a list of accessories that I'd like to get. An illuminated centering eyepiece will help with the 3 star alignment of the Go To tracking system and a motorized focusing control will help as well. So far I've only mounted my point and shoot camera piggy-back and used a modified web cam as the eyepiece but it's nice knowing that I have a system that can adapt to my growing desire to see more of the sky.
