Improving Alignment Accuracy

I found that I got better alignment by first using Starry Nights centered on Polaris and showing the North Celestial Pole and the Alt/Az grid. Zoom in to about 1 degree x 1 degree. This gives an accurate clock position of where Polaris is to the North Celestial Pole. Then flip the image horizontally and vertically. This is exactly where you should see Polaris when viewing through the polar alignment scope. I found this a bit more precise than relying on the Big Dipper and Cassiopea images on the lens.

First I'd like to mention that I'm not sure why there are complaints that the Polar Alignment Scope doesn't come with instructions. This is for the Skyview Pro mount, which comes with instructions for the Polar Alignment Scope, so it is assumed that youhave the instructions if you already have the mount, although I suppose if someone bought the mount used they may not have received the instructions with it. This was an excellent purchase for me. Before using the Polar Alignment Scope, I was able to get decent alignment, and to track pretty well, but the Polar Alignment Scope has made a noticeable difference. Previously with my tracking motor, I would still have to adjust the R.A. and DEC axis' every 5 or so minutes with a rough polar alignment done by pointing the "N" on the mount toward Polaris. After installing the Polar Alignment Scope, I've been able to observe more than 30 minutes without making any major adjustments. In fact, I changed objects before having to adjust, so it may have lasted longer. I will agree that the instructions for the Polar Alignment Scope that came with the SVP mount could have been written a little more clearly, and found through trial and error that if the focusing eyepiece is not tightened while adjusting the reticle, the reticle can fall forward and then be loose inside the alignment scope. This is easily fixed, though, and once you realize this, lining it up initially is not that complicated. I did use the method shown at the Andy's Shotglass website mentioned by a previous reviewer and I was able to get it lined up very well. Overall, I'm extremely happy with the purchase because it has performed exactly as I expected it to.

This is a real budget scope for the price. No instructions, no alignment, no light to see the reticle by. It could be much better, but it has helped me. Is it perfect?, No. The only thing worse is no scope.
