Here's a precision field flattener with a twist -- literally. By twisting the housing of the Orion Variable Field Flattener for Short Refractors, you can adjust its lens-to-camera sensor spacing from 55-80mm to give your favorite fast refractor telescopes flat-field imaging performance. Designed for use with telescopes ranging from 400-660mm in focal length with f/5-f/6 focal ratios, the Orion Variable Field Flattener corrects field curvature to produce an optically flat field which eliminates misshapen stars near the field edge.

To maximize imaging performance, a field flattener is needed to correct field curvature inherent in optically fast, short focal length refractor telescopes. Without a field flattener, refractors can exhibit bloated, misshapen stars near the edge of the telescope's field-of-view, which reduces astrophoto quality. As its name implies, using a field flattener produces a flat field with pinpont stars across the entire field of view for the very best astrophotography performance.

Since you can adjust the distance between the Orion Variable Field Flattener's lens and an attached imaging camera's sensor from 55-80mm, this versatile device easily accommodates many different models of CCD, CMOS and DSLR cameras. This adjustable spacing is especially convenient since it means you won't need to use separate spacer rings or extensions to reach focus with most astrophotography setups. Once the backfocus distance is set, a rigid locking mechanism ensures zero flexure without slippage for rock-solid imaging performance. You can even adjust the Variable Field Flattener spacing without removing attached cameras and other imaging accessories.

The Orion Variable Field Flattener for Short Refractors features fully multi-coated, Ohara glass optics to transmit the maximum amount of light to your imaging camera. With a 50mm clear aperture, this flattener is ideal for use with full-frame and smaller cameras. Two interchangeable camera attachment adapters are included, one with standard T-threads (M42) and another with wider-format M48 threads. The wider M48 adapter allows optimal illumination of full-frame camera sensors.

The machined aluminum housing of the Orion Variable Field Flattener for Short Refractors features a tapered 2" barrel which securely fits in 2" telescope focusers. Threaded for use with 2" imaging filters. Weighs 12 oz. For photographic use only.
