Orion gets requests all the time from serious amateur astronomers asking what binocular we'd recommend for wide-field stargazing. Well, from now on our answer will be "Resolux"! They're our new favorite astro binoculars (and equally superb for long-distance daytime viewing), combining high-resolution, flat-field optics with mechanical construction that meets the U.S. military spec for ruggedness and the strict JTII spec for collimation. They are fully waterproof, and nitrogen purged to prevent internal lens fogging. And all this for a very reasonable price.

With this Resolux 10x50 binocular, you'll enjoy performance that you simply won't find in other binoculars. Your first scan of the Milky Way will prove it - pinpoint stars set in bold contrast against the dark background. Gorgeous! The extra-large BAK-4 prisms and advanced multi-coatings on all optical surfaces really drink in the light. The eyepieces focus individually, which yields a sturdier mechanical design than a center-focus mechanism. And with 18mm of eye relief, even eyeglass wearers will see the full field of view.

This Resolux's all-metal housing is armored with thick rubber to ensure a secure, comfortable grip. Each binocular comes with lens caps, heavy-duty tripod adapter, soft padded case, and neck strap.

I purchased a pair of Resolux 10 x 50 binoculars in the spring and have been delighted with them. I'm adding this review principally to say two things: that although the binoculars are indeed heavy, I have never owned binoculars that balance so well in the hands, so that in use they seem lighter and steadier than their weight would suggest. Having said that, I must add--use a tripod when you can. With a tripod the amount of detail you can see on, e.g. the Moon is well-nigh incredible. I have also gotten great views of objects like the Lagoon Nebula and Comet Hartley. I no longer use my pretty good 11 x 80s, because the optical superiority of the Resolux negates any benefit from the larger aperture. I agree with the other reviewers that something needs to be done about the objective caps, which do not remain in place. I'd happily cut them off if Orion would offer a functional replacement cap.

Very Good optics, but difficult to hand-hold comfortably due to weight. Attached eye caps keep popping off when not in use. Because of the inconvenience, it is not good for what most astronomers use binoculars for--wide scanning of broad stellar swaths and satellite tracking. The instrument you use most often is the one to recommend, and this instrument is used rarely, so although I would say overall it is a good product, I cannot recommend it.
Favorite viewing location:??The Grassy Knoll
Favorite object to observe:??The Sky
Pros: optics
Cons: weight
No, I do not recommend this product.

Got these binoculars about three weeks ago and really like them. The separate focusing rings prevent them from going out of focus when looking up. They hold focus, are bright and have a wide and relatively flat field. The binoculars feel solid and well built, but are heavy so they tire your arms after a while. The captive lens covers are rubber discs that don't fit well into the objective lens end of the binos and could have been better designed. I have enjoyed the night view with these and am looking forward to more night time views.
