For anything more than casual use you need a tripod that’s very stable, strong enough to withstand some serious abuse, and yet moves with fluid smoothness. Our Orion Paragon XHD extra heavy-duty professional field tripod fills the bill, providing extra heavy-duty support for giant astronomy binoculars, cameras, spotting scopes, and telescopes such as the Orion ShortTube 80 Refractor telescope, Apex 90, 102 and 127 Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes and more.

The Orion XHD Paragon-Plus Tripod is constructed almost exclusively of aluminum, making it stronger at key stress points where other tripods fail. It features large, adjustable aluminum-tube legs with robust lock levers for convenient setup and takedown. Each leg features graduated reference etchings so you can quickly and easily extend each leg to the same preferred length - a great timesaver when trying to setup gear in a hurry. The legs are tri-braced to the center elevator housing for extra stability. This paragon-plus tripod is 67-inches tall when fully extended, putting binoculars easily at eye level for most people.

This extra heavy-duty tripod holds heavier loads. Tube legs 1-1/4-inch maximum diameter; each leg laterally braced with dual 3/4-inch aluminum tubes. Elevator shaft 1-1/8-inch diameter, 11-3/4-inch travel. Height fully extended 67-inches; folds to 34-inches. Weighs 9 lbs.

The Orion XHD Paragon-Plus tripod comes with a two-way fluid-type pan head. It features tension adjustment knobs on both axes for wonderfully smooth, controlled motion. The pan head can be raised or lowered on its aluminum rack-and-pinion elevator post with a hinged hand crank. Panning is easy with the 11-inch-long adjustable handle. The quick-release 1/4-inch-20 dovetail shoe makes attaching and detaching your instrument from the pan head a snap. Other nice features include convertible cushion/spike feet and built-in bubble level.

I recieved this product and unpacked it, giving it a close inspection. At first glance I saw alot of plastic parts and the weight of the product was much less than I would expect for such a large tripod. I picked it up and extended the leg segments to their maximum length. The leg extentions locks are plastic, but they don't slip or flex. While giving it a very close inspection I found that the rest of the plastic parts were not used anywhere that would be subjected to severe strain or pressure, they were mostly trim pieces. All parts subject to stress were aluminum and put together really well. This tripod turns out to be quite stable and handles my 25x100 Skymaster Binoculars nicely. Bottom line is that the tripod is very strong for the weight, which is a great advantage when setting up or moving it around. I consider it a quality purchase.

I've been trying to use my Shortscope 80 with a standard camera tripod. It's a frustrating experience as the head doesn't move smoothly and the whole thing flexes so badly you have to aim ABOVE Jupiter and then let go, so it will be in the eyepiece. All that was solved with Orion's XHD tripod. Smooth panning, solid from top to bottom, a real pleasure. Great product. Makes my other tripods seem rickety in comparison.

I needed a stable tripod with a solid mount for large binos and my Orion short tube refractor that was also easy to transport and set up. This tripod does the job very well. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.
Pros: very good design
Cons: none

I use the Orion Paragon-Plus XHD Extra Heavy-Duty Tripod along with my Orion Paragon-Plus Binocular Mount. That combination is simply the best, low cost way to mount my 20-80 deep sky binoculars. That tripod is very stable and the height adjustment is perfect for observers of any age or height. The easy to use lever locks are the best way to make quick adjustments in height and leveling. I just leave my binoculars attached to the mount and tripod and carry the whole assembly out to the back yard, and I am observing in a matter of minutes! It is rock-solid stable and simply the best way to observe with medium to high power astro-binoculars. The tripod is small enough when the legs are retracted that it makes a perfect travel mount and it has been all over the country with us as we travel. I would highly recomment this tripod to anyone.
Favorite viewing location:??my backyard
Favorite object to observe:??binocular viewing of star clusters, moon, larger planets and nebula
Pros: small and compact when retracted, extremely stable, very easy to use, perfect travel tripod for deep sky binoculars, economically priced
Cons: i have not found any reason to be negative about t
