Mfg Model #  08296

Our largest reflector optimized for astrophotography boasts 10" parabolic primary optics with a very fast f/3.9 focal ratio for exceptional wide-field, deep-space imaging performance. Even faint galaxies and nebulas exhibit stunning detail with limited exposure time when photographed through this large-aperture astrograph with a CCD imager or DSLR camera. You’ll get incredibly bright, crisp images that will make apo refractor aficionados green with envy - and you’ll have more green in your wallet thanks to this telescope’s more-affordable Newtonian design.

Both the 10" (254mm) primary and secondary mirror feature enhanced reflectivity (94%) aluminization for bright, contrast-rich images. The 82mm minor axis secondary mirror provides excellent full-field illumination with modern CCD imagers and DSLR cameras, with less than 8% light drop-off at the edge of APS-C sized sensors. The adjustable 4-vane secondary mirror holder features very thin, 1mm thick spider vanes to minimize diffraction effects in images. A center mark on the primary mirror and three easy-grip collimation knobs make optical alignment easy and precise.

Extended tube length of 7.5" in front of the focuser blocks intrusion of off-axis light, ensuring optimum image contrast. The sturdy 2" dual-speed (11:1), low-profile Crayford focuser permits ultra-fine focus and has 38mm of drawtube travel and a helpful drawtube lock knob. A steel reinforcing plate bolted inside the 38.6" long tube directly under the focuser helps eliminate flexure between it and tube, even with heavy imaging gear attached.

As with any fast Newtonian, an optional coma corrector is recommended to achieve flat-field imaging performance. Standard accessories include two cast aluminum tube rings, a 9x50 finder scope, 2" and 1.25" extension adapters, and a 12V DC fan for accelerated primary mirror cool-down (fan requires 12V power supply or 8 AA batteries, not included).

Not only does this affordable astrograph excel as an astrophotography instrument, but the 10" f/3.9 Newtonian can also be used as a formidable visual telescope. Its large 10" aperture and fast focal ratio will provide wondrous views of deep space objects, the planets and Moon, and sparkling star fields in both 2" and 1.25" telescope eyepieces.

Get the Orion 10" f/3.9 Newtonian Astrograph reflector telescope today and take your shot!

This is my 3rd telescope. I also have a refractor and Schmidt Cassegrain. Overall I love this telescope. The optical quality is excellent, The focuser is very nice, although it needed adjustement to spring load the roller agains the tube so it would stay in place once focussed. One complaint, is the fan on the back of the mirror has no air gap in frnt of the fan, so it doesnt move air properly, hardly at all. I think the spacing must have changed, since the one in the pictures seems to have an air gap in front. I will adjust that too. But, be advised, my scope with mount rings and no eyepiece weighs 32 pounds, not the 25.5 pounds in the specs. Maybe they weighed it without the mounting rings. The optical alignment was perfect when received. And it is great for eyepiece viewing and astrophotography. I have it mounted on the CGEM ount, and it works well, but is at the upper limit of weight for that mount. The only real downside is the scope is relatively big and heavy, so portability is somewhat limited. But I keep it in the garage, and move it about 20 feet to set up and view, so that works fine. I think it is a great scope for the money, and you wont be sorry you bought it!

I purchased this telescope specifically for astrophotography due to short focal length and light gathering capabilities. The telescope has a good looking appearance and at first view looks well build. It comes with a fan for fast cooling and it is baffle which was a surprise since this future is not well highlighted. Regretly, the focuser came in really bad shape, so I could not test it any further for astrophotography since it would have been almost impossible to reach focus. The focuser made all type of noises, and tilted/moved depending which nob I moved. The micro focuser did not work at all, and when I tried to lock it, the focuser moved more than a centimeter.
Another problem I found was the telescope???s specifications describe the OTA weight being 25.5 lbs. This is statement is not right at all. The OTA itself weights 31 lbs. If you add the Orion guider package, mounting rings and a DSLR camera you will be having a 41lbs set up, which would not be a problem if you have a mount that can handle 45 lbs+. However, if you have an Atlas mount you will be overloading the mount and perhaps calling for trouble.
Pros: short focal lenght, baffled
Cons: not a good focuser, heavy for 40 lbs mounts
No, I do not recommend this product.

My first real optical tube worth mentioning was the Meade AR-6" LXD refractor. This is a good scope for general visual appilcations. Of course, I began to develop interests in astrophotography. I used a number of different "poor boy" improvised set-ups to capture short exposure single shot images. Well, to get to the point, I was able to purchase just this year an Orion Atlas Eg mount. WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Also I now (1 1/2 weeks) have the Orion 10" f3.9 Newtonian Astrograph with the Orion 80mm short tube refractor, Starshoot Autoguider combo.
I am about as new at astrophotography as you can get and had no previous knowledge or real experience of the actual process,(still don't know much!), but I have to say the first light images I collected with this set-up just 4 days ago have highly impressed and encouraged me! I cannot say enough about this Astrographs performance so far. I do have one slightly negative comment concerning the 2" crayford style focuser, I wish it used a compression ring at the eyepiece rather than the two thumb screws.I would highly (and have) reccommend it for anyone wishing to enter astrophotography at an affordable price with exceptional results! I will try to post my first photos. They are one shot, color, 2-3 min exposure w/nikon d3000 dslr.
Thanks Orion for all my astro equipment!
