Orion Dobsonian telescopes have always been known for superb optical and mechanical quality, wonderful ease of use, and remarkably affordable prices. One other thing they - and almost all other Dobsonians on the market - have had in common: you pushed the telescope to your observing target by hand.

GoTo Dob Chart

Until now. Orion is pleased to herald another giant leap in Dobsonian evolution with the introduction of the SkyQuest XTg series of fully motor driven GoTo Dobsonian telescopes, including the 12” aperture SkyQuest XT12g. Now, pointing a Dob to even the most elusive of NGC curiosities is as easy as pushing a button or two on the XT12g Dobsonians’ illuminated hand controller. High-torque servo motors guided by two pairs of high-resolution encoders then slew the telescope right to your object of interest - any of over 42,000 objects in the GoTo controller’s database. No more nudging the reflector telescope tube continuously to keep the object from drifting out of the field of view, either. The XT12g automatically tracks the object’s motion, keeping it centered in the eyepiece while you savor the view. Now that’s sure to please a crowd of interested friends and family who want to take a peek in the eyepiece at the beautiful view. What’s more, the closed-loop electronics of the XT12g let you move the telescope manually - or endure the accidental bump - without losing orientation for accurate, automated GoTo pointing!

The SkyQuest XT12g Dobsonian reflector combines GoTo pointing convenience with excellent portability and an amazingly affordable price (just compare its price to any other 12” GoTo telescope on the market). It features a 305mm (12") aperture, 1500mm focal-length parabolic mirror (f/4.9) made from low-thermal-expansion optical glass, with enhanced reflectivity (94%) aluminum coatings for high-definition images with maximum brightness. The primary mirror is center marked to make alignment of the optics (collimation) easier and more precise. The reflector optical tube comes equipped with a dual-speed 2" Crayford focuser (with 1.25" adapter) so views through either big 2”, or powerful 1.25” telescope eyepieces will be sharp and easy to focus. The 11:1 fine focus knob ensures that you’ll quickly find that ultra-sharp focus point that makes your target object pop with dazzling clarity!

The GoTo base comes with all optical encoders, drive motors, and gears pre-installed, making assembly a breeze. The optical tube drops into the base on a dovetail trunnion and locks in place with a single hand knob. A simple two-star alignment is all it takes to orient the telescope to the sky for GoTo operation. Then let the fun begin! When you’re ready to call it a night, just loosen the knob and lift the tube off the base for easy transport or storage. Handles on the Dobsonian base’s front and side panels make it easy to lift and carry, whether you’re going from car to field, or from house to backyard.

A great complement of standard accessories with the Orion SkyQuest XT12g GoTo Dobsonian Telescope include an EZ Finder II reflex sight, removable eyepiece rack with holes for one 2" and three 1.25" telescope eyepieces, hand controller mounting bracket, quick collimation cap, a wide-field 28mm DeepView 2" telescope eyepiece, and a 12.5mm illuminated-crosshair Plossl telescope eyepiece (1.25") which enables ultra-precise GoTo system alignment. The XT12g Dobsonian requires power from a 12-volt DC field battery or AC adapter, sold separately. A DC cable is included that has a car auto-lighter style plug on one end for connecting to your 12-volt DC power source, and a coaxial plug on the other end that fits the power jack installed on the base.

You’re going to love plying the night skies with the SkyQuest XT12g GoTo Dobsonian telescope. The GoTo hand controller’s softly red-illuminated keypad lets you select an object from a variety of intuitive menus, or take a tour of the "best" objects in the sky at any time. The time you’ll save by not having to manually search for your targets will allow you to kick back, relax, and spend more time enjoying the magnificent views through the eyepiece. The whole family can enjoy an efficient evening full of astronomical adventures with an Orion SkyQuest XT12g Dobsonian.

If you are an intermediate or advanced deep-sky hunter who wants a big-aperture telescope but not the high price tag, a Dobsonian is the way to go. And now, finally, you can have one that offers the convenience of motor driven accurate GoTo pointing — to anything in the heavens you’d like to see! Make your next telescope the Orion SkyQuest XT12g GoTo Dobsonian reflector!

My Orion 12" GoTo Dob is the best thing since cotton candy! Works like a charm, excellent fit and finish, great optics, GoTo works like a charm. But coolest thing I just discovered, I can control this big Dob with the Starry Night Special Edition planetarium software that came FREE with the scope. Pretty impressive to see this big scope slew around and find objects using the SynScan hand control (paddle), but even more impressive to be able to do the same thing (and more) from within a planetarium program. Find the object in the planetarium, right-click and slew to it. Go back to the scope, and there is the object in the FOV. Magic! The only improvement I would like - hey Orion, when are you folks going to offer a 16" or even an 18" GoTo Dob? Jon

This is a great Dobsonian Telescope. The optics are very vey good! I use the Orion Q70s, Naglers and Delos eyepieces and watching M42 and Omega Centauri feels like a real space travel.
I have compared this 12" Orion Telescope with a 15" Obsession dob Telescope, and almost in all deep sky objects, the Orion has been better.
Very easy to align and operate.
Pros: enough aperture to see all the deep sky objects
Cons: need 2 persons to carry
Yes, I recommend this product!

After my first comments and initial excitement concerning the XT8g over a year ago I thought I would take some time before writing about the XT12g. My XT8g was a surprise. I expected average optical performance and the scope was initially purchased for the uniqueness of the mount. I had plans on replacing the existing telescope with a longer focal length optical tube or refiguring the optics to turn the XT8g into a top notch visual telescope. The optics turned out to be excellent with no need for modification and gave me reason to step up to the XT12g. I purchased the XT12g scope with fingers crossed hoping that the optical quality would be the same as the XT8g.
This month is my one year anniversary of ownership of my XT12g. Optically, this is the finest large telescope (10 inch plus) I have ever owned and I have owned a few in my 30+ years of designing and building telescopes. The visual imaging is superb for both deep sky and lunar/planetary observing. The optics are so good that I can detect the companion of Eta Gemini at 114x on a night of good seeing. Most large telescopes will have a very hard time pulling off this feat unless the optics are very good.
Deep sky is as you would expect from a 12 inch telescope. The great optics combined with a relatively small secondary obstruction produces deep sky/planetary views that are of very high contrast. Nice! Having a dual speed focuser on this instrument is helpful for focusing since the telescope focuses so sharply. The globular cluster M13 is a myriad of pinpoint stars. M42 in Orion is spectacular. All six stars in the trapezium are routine in just average seeing. The beauty of Saturn is off the scale. Last year during an observing session in June, the Cassini division could be detected even though the Saturn ring tilt was only 1.7 degrees. This year was even better. Jupiter is stunning with more details than you can draw. The moons of Jupiter are disks of differing size with hints of details on nights of very good seeing. When I observe the moon I have many high resolution targets that I like to look at. One, the crater Archimedes, has three main pits on its floor that can be difficult to see. The XT12g will not only reveal the three main pits but will also resolve the many finer pits that cover its flat floor. The central rille in the Alpine Valley has been well seen.
As far as the GOTO Dobsonian mount is concerned, the performance is good if you use just two stars for alignment but improves greatly if you add more alignment during the observing session which is easy to do. The mount must be level for good GOTO performance though. I have observed many objects that I would have not spent the time to look for if I had to ???star hop??? to them. Setup and tear down is easy for such a large telescope.
My XT12g is an excellent overall telescope. If they are all this well made, this telescope, for what it can do as a visual instrument, is an excellent deal.

I have been in astronomy for over 45 years. I have used many different scopes for many different reasons. I wanted a scope with good light gathering power, with GOTO ability that was quick and easy to set up. I use this scope to teach my astronomy labs and do my research which requires fast setup portability for recorded video time insertion. I am able to use a Watec 902H Ultimate with an Owl 0.5 Focal Reducer and KIWI GPS to produce live video at 30 frames per second down to 13th magnitude in a 25 minute field of view to timed accuracy of 0.03 seconds. This makes your OTA a 12" f/2.45 which makes it a very nice and fast, realtime, video system for my purposes. My only complaint is that your system is so powerful that I have to make sure I avoid all the bright objects in the sky so that I do not damage my camera. Since there are always such problems in life, then this is one of the reasons for getting your very accurate GOTO system that helps to keep me only on the many faint objects that fill the sky. Thank You!
