We love those premium "apo" refractors as much as the next guy. We just don't think you should have to work a second job or put the family heirlooms on eBay to own one. Now you won't, thanks to our amazingly affordable Orion 80mm Extra-Low Dispersion Refractor Telescope Optical Tube.

It's a sweet telescope all right. With a focal length of 600mm (f/7.5), the "ED80" is wonderfully suited for visual applications on both solar system and deep-sky objects as well as for prime-focus astrophotography and charge coupled device or, "CCD" imaging.

It sports a multi-coated 80mm objective lens doublet, one element of which is crafted from Extra-Low Dispersion, or "ED" optical glass. This high-grade glass greatly reduces the chromatic aberration inherent in standard achromats. Images appear more sharply focused and color fringing around bright objects is lessened dramatically.

The objective lens is held in a machined, black anodized aluminum cell and shaded by an aluminum dew cap. Internal tube baffles ensure high contrast and prevent ghosting.

The ED80mm features a superb, backlash-free 2" Crayford-style focuser, which accepts both 2" and 1.25" diagonals. Notice the focus wheels: classy, brushed-aluminum hubs with ridged rubber grip rings. Nice touch. Set the focuser tension or lock it for imaging with the focus lock knob. The molded-in dovetail base accepts the optional Orion finder scope of your choice. Tube has a built-in 1/4"-20 plate.

At a length of just 24", the ED80mm is extremely portable. And at an affordable price so the rest of us can enjoy the pleasures of a premium refractor without the pain of the premium price!

Sold as optical tube assembly only, without accessories. Compatible tube rings are #7371, sold separately. Finished in gunmetal gray metallic.

I've had this scope for about 8 months now. The optical quality is good however there are some things a buyer you should know about this instrument that others don't seem to be pointing out.
1. It has a single speed focusser with an imprecise focus lock mechanism. Achieving and keeping fine focus is not easy with this scope. And it only allows 2" of focus travel.
2. The scope includes none of the accessories you're likely to want or need. No diagonal, no finderscope, no mounting rings and of course no eyepieces. Expect to pay quite a bit more (almost double) to acquire those additional items.
In addition a few minor elements of this scope are sloppy. Both pieces of the two-piece cap fall off easily. The dew shield is not removable so if you get water spots on your objective it's hard to clean, there is no carry case (though you probably won't need one as the scope is pretty rugged).
Had I known these things in advance, I probably would have opted for a better quality scope at the outset. Mind you I'm not saying this is a bad instrument, just that the limitations and additional needed components mean my recommendation is in the GOOD category rather than the GREAT or EXCELLENT category.
PS I use my scope primarily for astrophotography where the limited focus travel and focus fine adjustment are the most problematic. On the other hand, it's the least expensive f/7.5 600mm lens you're likely to ever find for your camera!
I use this scope with my lightweight Astroview EQ mount and my Sirius mounts (both Orion products).
Pros: inexpensive, good optical quality, lightweight, durable, good for lunar solar or dso
Cons: no mounting hardware / rings, no finderscope, cap falls off, single speed focuser, only 2" of focus travel, dew shield not removable
Yes, I recommend this product!

I purchased this primarily for astrophtography based on the reputation of it's optics and it hasn't disappointed. I replaced the stock focuser with a Moonlite and for about $900 have a fantastic instrument. It now weighs just over 8 lbs. With the new focuser it can't use the proprietary 0.85x field flattener/focal reducer but it works great with the Orion field flattener for short refractors.and the Astro-Tech field flattener.
Pros: great optics, good construction, light/portable
Cons: stock focuser
Yes, I recommend this product!

While the telescope is small, it offers incredible views that rival my 10" astrograph. With the optional tube rings, I was easily able to attach the ED80 to my CGEM mount. Portability and setup is easy, and the wide field of view is incredible. Terrestrial photography is on par with high-quality and much more costly super-telephoto lenses. The only problem is there is no easy way to lock the focuser. It would be better if there were a knob instead of a hex nut to lock it down. I highly recommend this to beginning astrophotographers and anyone looking for a grab-and-go scope.
Favorite viewing location:??Chickasaw National Recreation Area
Favorite object to observe:??M51
Pros: portability
Cons: cannot easily lock the focuser
Yes, I recommend this product!
