Let's take a closer look at each included item in this value-packed telescope bundle:
Orion Observer 60 AZ Altazimuth Refractor Telescope
A classic refractor telescope with precision glass optics and great portability, the Orion Observer 60 is a complete backyard telescope package that includes the refractor optical tube, a host of accessories, and an adjustable aluminum tripod. The Observer 60 AZ weighs just 5.8 lbs. total when assembled, including the mount and tripod, making it very easy for anyone in the family to transport from the house to the backyard for a night full of stargazing adventure. Close-up views of the Moon's rocky, cratered surface seen through the Observer 60 will give you and your family a new way of looking at our planet's nearest neighbor in the night sky.
The Orion Observer 60 Refractor Telescope offers higher quality and more reliable performance than any telescope you would find in a department store. Featuring an aluminum telescope optical tube and all-glass optics, including a fully anti-reflection coated 60mm aperture achromatic objective lens, the Observer 60 yields crisp, bright views of the night sky. The included altazimuth mount provides smooth motion in both altitude (up/down) and azimuth (left/right) axes of motion. The sturdy yet lightweight aluminum tripod is adjustable for crowd-pleasing performance and comfort. There's even a handy accessory tray included that attaches to the tripod so you have a convenient spot to place your eyepieces and other astronomy accessories that come with this affordable Lunar Explorer Telescope Bundle.
The Observer 60 Refractor Telescope itself comes with two telescope eyepieces: quality 25mm and 10mm Kellner oculars with 1.25" barrels. the included telescope eyepieces will provide 28x and 70x power magnification options. The included EZ Finder II reflex sight makes aiming the telescope nice and easy following a simple alignment procedure. A 90° mirror diagonal is included for comfortable nighttime viewing. The versatile Observer 60 refractor's 1.25" rack-and-pinion focuser adjusts smoothly and can also accept a 1.25" correct-image diagonal (sold separately) if you wish to use the telescope for daytime terrestrial viewing of wildlife, landscapes, and more.
Orion Shorty 2x Barlow Lens
The very versatile Orion Shorty 2x Barlow Lens doubles the magnifying power of any 1.25" eyepiece, essentially dividing the eyepiece's focal length by a factor of 2. For example: using a 25mm eyepiece in the Shorty 2x Barlow provides the same magnification a 12.5mm eyepiece would normally exhibit (25 / 2 = 12.5). Using this simple formula, you can easily determine how each of your 1.25" telescope eyepieces will perform when inserted in the Shorty 2x Barlow. A 25mm ocular will behave like a 12.5mm eyepiece; a 10mm eyepiece will provide the magnification of a 5mm eyepiece, and so on. Using the Orion Shorty Barlow Lens is easy. Simply insert the Shorty 2x Barlow into the Observer 60 AZ telescope focuser or diagonal, and then insert any 1.25" eyepiece into the Shorty, gently securing it in place with the two thumbscrews on the Barlow housing. Then, adjust the telescope focus wheels to enjoy double the magnification of the eyepiece used. Presto!
Orion 13% Transmission Moon Filter
When looking at the Moon through any telescope, bright reflected sunlight can produce significant glare. The Moon's disk, even at partial phases, is in fact so intensely bright with reflected sunlight that observing surface details can be challenging due to the overwhelming glare. This glare can be so bright that it washes out most of the interesting lunar features such as craters rilles, mountains, and valleys. The considerable brightness also reduces contrast on our nearest neighbor in the solar system.
To improve contrast and tone down glare easily, we recommend using a neutral-density 1.25" Orion 13% Transmission Moon Filter. This inexpensive accessory threads directly into a 1.25" eyepiece barrel and blocks 87% of the light gathered by the telescope, making for more comfortable lunar views exhibiting higher contrast. Once installed on a 1.25" telescope eyepiece, the Orion 13% Transmission Moon Filter will bring out considerably more lunar surface details thanks to the boosted contrast. Not only will more surface features and details pop out, but you can study them in greater comfort, thanks to Moon Filter reducing overall brightness without altering color. This neutral-density telescope eyepiece filter reduces irradiation, which is the distortion at the boundary between light and dark areas, such as along the lunar terminator. Using a Moon filter also helps conserve dark-adapted vision while viewing the lunar surface, so you can enjoy the view for longer periods of time.
Orion MoonMap 260
The included Orion MoonMap 260 is a useful reference map of the Moon's surface that will help the whole family learn the names and locations of more than 260 craters, mountains, valleys, "seas" and other interesting lunar features you can explore with your telescope. Use the MoonMap 260 to identify craters you've observed, or use it before you go out with a telescope to plan a night full of Moon-watching family fun.
Orion Star Target Planisphere
For finding your way around the starry sky, there is no better tool than a star wheel, also called a planisphere, like the affordable Orion StarTarget Planisphere.
Whether you are skywatching with just your eyes, with binoculars, or with a telescope, a planisphere star chart is an essential tool you will use time and time again. It is an invaluable reference tool for learning the constellations, identifying stars, and locating popular bright celestial objects such as galaxies, open and globular star clusters, and diffuse and planetary nebulas.
The easy to use Orion Star Target Planisphere is a rounded star chart map which you rotate in its housing to dial in the date and time. Once the preferred date and time is dialed in, the Star Target displays a nicely detailed map of the current night sky. You can then rotate the Star Target to get a sneak peek of what objects will become visible as the night goes on, or to see when objects will be ideally positioned in the sky for observation through a telescope or pair of binoculars. It is easy to plan an entire night of stargazing fun in advance with the handy Orion Star Target, since it can tell you when and where your favorite objects and constellations will be visible.
