Our SkyQuest XT4.5 is a quality telescope, with point-and-view simplicity that makes it easy to use and makes stargazing fun! The optical performance is far and away better than flimsy department store models. Its 4.5" (114mm) mirror, housed in an enameled steel tube, gathers 260% more starlight than a 60mm refractor. More light means you can see a lot more celestial objects in greater detail. In a review of low-cost beginner telescopes, Sky and Telescope (12/05) proclaimed the XT4.5 "The best of the bunch - a solid combination of optics and mechanics." Try it and see for yourself!

Classic Dob Chart

This bundle includes the crowd-pleasing Orion XT4.5 Classic Dobsonian and our Orion Beginner Barlow Kit for powerful performance! The included Beginner Barlow Kit is a great combination of accessories for anyone beginning a hobby of amateur astronomy and includes the powerful Orion Shorty 2x Barlow Lens, as well as the useful Orion Beginning Stargazers Toolkit.

A 2-power (2x) Barlow lens is an extremely versatile eyepiece accessory that doubles the magnification of any eyepiece installed. For example, when used with the XT4.5 Classic Dobsonian telescope with its 910mm focal length, using a 10mm eyepiece will yield a view with 91-power magnification. If you installed the same 10mm eyepiece into the Shorty 2x Barlow Lens and used the same XT4.5 Dobsonian telescope, your viewing magnification would be increased to 182-power magnification (91 x 2). Barlows are great eyepiece accessories for beginning astronomers since they allow you to double the power of the eyepieces included with your telescope. They are a great and affordable way to add to your arsenal of viewing magnifications. What’s more, the Orion Shorty 2x Barlow gets it’s "Shorty" moniker from its compact size compared to other Barlow lenses, so it’s easier to find a spot for it when packing your gear for a night under the stars.

With the included Orion Beginning Stargazer’s Toolkit, you’ll never be "lost in space!" It contains four items designed to help new astronomers find their way around the heavens.

  1. Star Target Planisphere - Dial in your local date and time and it shows you the locations of the constellations and deep-sky objects in the night sky
  2. Discover the Stars - A wonderfully written and illustrated observer’s guide
  3. Moon Map - Identify craters and other lunar features with your telescope
  4. Orion RedBeam Mini LED Astro Flashlight - Emits pure red light that won’t spoil your night vision. Perfect for reading your planisphere or seeing what you’re doing at the telescope

Media Buzz

Sky & Telescope Magazine — December 2005
"When it comes to raw performance, the Orion XT4.5 Dobsonian and StarBlast were the hands-down winners. Both provided brighter, more detailed views than the other scopes.

"The best of the bunch — solid combination of optics and mechanics.

"The Orion XT4.5 had the best finder [scope] — a nice 6x26 noninverting finder mounted in a superb spring-loaded bracket."

Astronomy Magazine — May 2003
"This little Dob can ’dig deep.’ .... The XT4.5 is an ideal beginner’s scope for the upcoming astronomer,...."

Sky & Telescope Magazine — April 2001
"Tough-as-nails design .... well-designed optical system and quality accessories. The Orion Nebula showed lots of texture .... Lots of star groupings showed up crisply in the Double Cluster .... On Jupiter, we could see the Great Red Spot .... Saturn showed four moons, the Cassini Division .... and subtle zones on the globe.

7 The Orion XT4.5 telescope is perfect for a beginner. It's a compact Dobsonian reflector that shows hundreds of objects in much more detail than a 60mm refractor (a classic beginner telescope). This kit includes a Barlow and stargazer toolkit.

I really enjoy this telescope, there are so many great features! It took me a little less than an hour to put together and the instructions are clear. The base is made of compressed wood but it is really solid, the tube is made of rolled steel and is very strong. It came coliumated and without any defects. It is so easy to use with the Dobsonian mount I can hardly believe it. The finder scope is also of good quality but I find it awkward to use and I have had some difficulty getting it centered with the telescopes picture. The two eyepieces are quality and are 2 good sizes to start with. I wasn't expecting it to weight as much as it did all put together, about 20 lbs. It hasn't stopped me from enjoying it at my house but it is awkward to travel with. The telescope itself is solid and a good value. I would recommend it.
The barlow kit it comes with is a good kit and could come in useful if you really wanted the books but I tend to use Google Sky a lot more often. The barlow lens is good quality and comes in handy when you need extra magnification but in hindsight I would probably buy it separately and save a few bucks.
Favorite viewing location:??Back deck, driveway
Favorite object to observe:??The Sun, the moon
Pros: well made, easy to use mount, looks spectacular, quality eyepieces included
Cons: difficult to transport, extra kit not worth it (to me)
Yes, I recommend this product!

I'm a 35 year old that just became a kid again, my husband and I just purchase this beginner telescope. And we love it, we can see Jupiter with moons, Venus, Mars, Saturn with moons and rings, and THE MOON!! wow it's bright. Also we have viewed Orion nebula with no filters, with a faint whitish cloud over the stars, the Pleiades and much more, this all in Las Vegas, about 500 ft from a Casino. WOW! Is all I can say. As most young children I received a telescope that the best you could see is watching the neighbors back yard or just the moon, got boring really quick. To have many stars to look at, as my childhood was in WI on a farm a lots of stars to see in the sky but no good telescope to view them. If I had gotten this telescope as a kid, boy I would have never gone to bed. Great price, easy to use, the two eyepieces way better than anything from those department store models. I have refound my passion with the stars again with this telescope, if you are looking to find out if this is your hobby or just want a telescope that works get this little power house. Thank you Orion for now I'm 35 going on 10, and loving it (well some mornings kinda hurt, but would never give it up to see what I'm viewing now). Had a little trouble with software installation but after downloading C++ for windows and support software from windows no problems. I found this information on a starry night website under support and type in problem in search area. Thank again Orion and happy hunting clear skies
Favorite viewing location:??Where ever I can get darkness
Favorite object to observe:??planets
Pros: great for the price
Cons: to much daylight

Enabled to review the 4.5 Dobsonian telescope as an amateur is a pleasure. At 56 years of age, I???ve had several ???telescopes??? purchased by parents; then purchasing Them from Department stores ???As a Parent.??? I???ve had several hours over many years with various brand name scopes, usually refractor types, though I???ve also had a 4.5 Reflector with EQ mount. None have come close to the first nights experience with this little Scope. I say ???little??? for the comparative size and not It???s capability to please the viewer willingly. The base and Dob mount are built to last, and smooth movement; ???braking??? when required with ease. I???ve held licenses in construction, I was very lucky to have helped construct a famous ???Theme Park.??? I know Quality, and this scope ???fills the bill.??? I live in the worst possible place to view anything in the sky; Las Vegas. On our first night with a relative humidity of 11% in 76 degree temp; with severely polluted skies (14 Halogen street light encompass our home) we were able to view not only the Moon in detail; though Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, distinguishing Their color, divisions; and major moons. I was well pleased to say the least, with my Wife more excited than myself. Two nights later the Space Station passed through Orion's belt as we were viewing! Quick shot, to say the least; though totally unexpected! I had ???an up??? on the true ???first timer??? to the Hobby with additional eye pieces. The two inclusive with the Barlow package will suffice the eager beginners needs quite well; though you???ll instinctively want to add to your collection of existing eye pieces. And yes, I must admit; I too ???pushed??? the scope passed It???s suggested max of 228 X???s to a whopping 455 power. (4 mm w/ Barlow) I Did it for as another reviewer said, ???for grins??? and was still able to actually ???see??? the Moon with albeit, a somewhat darkened and degraded Image. On that night I felt as though we were sailing ???around the Moon!??? Enough said, hands down to anyone looking for a steady, rock solid ???point to??? scope as for even the ???smallest??? of Astronomers for ages 5 to 95; this could be your dream come true. Thank You Orion for making my Wife's dreams come true as well as myself!
Favorite viewing location:??Back Yard, and Just out of town.
Favorite object to observe:??Everything!
Pros: ease of assembly, quality engineering, economically priced
Cons: needs a 45% adapter for sighting scope, not another thing!
Yes, I recommend this product!

I am new to star gazing at 52 years old. I really think this is a better than good beginner telescope. It is fun to use gives great veiws of the moon (my primary target).
My few problems are the focuser is very loose. The tube the eye peice fits into wiggles back and forth a fair amount which means I have to put a little pressure on it with my thumb so it does not move while I am looking through the scope.
The finder scope requires yoga clases to use effectively. Needs something with 90 degree angle on it which oriion could offer with little change in the price of the scope.
A bit more documentation aimed at the complete beginner would have been nice as well.
Favorite viewing location:??My driveway so far
Favorite object to observe:??The moon. My grandson and I could spend hours gazing at the moon.
Yes, I recommend this product!
