Here's one of our staff favorite telescopes that is especially popular with astrophotography enthusiasts, the 80mm apochromatic triplet Orion ED80T CF refractor telescope. With an 80mm aperture triplet objective featuring FPL-53 extra-low dispersion glass, views and captured images come through true to color and exhibit tack-sharp resolution.

Apochromatic refractor telescopes have a devoted following amongst amateur astronomers, for good reason. The crisp view offered by a high-quality apo refractor is truly a wonder to behold and share. Apochromatic refractors significantly reduce chromatic aberration, or false color, compared to standard achromatic refractor telescopes due to the use of "ED" (Extra-low Dispersion) optical glass and use of three optical elements. The visual and imaging benefits of apochromatic refractor telescopes have helped to make them instruments of choice preferred by many real-time observers and imaging experts alike.

The ED80T CF apo refractor is a versatile power performer telescope well-suited for multiple applications. With a focal length of 480mm (f/6.0), its fast unobstructed optics yield detail-rich visual views of solar system and wide-field deep-sky objects alike. The triplet objective and top-notch ED optics virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations making the ED80T CF refractor an excellent candidate for astrophotography use when used with an imaging-capable equatorial mount and CCD or DSLR camera. The relatively small size and light weight of the refractor telescope makes it perfectly portable for escapades to dark-sky locations for either visual or photographic expeditions. The retractable dew shield makes the ED80T CF even more compact for storage and transport, with a length of 14.3" with the dew shield fully retracted. The refractor telescope measures 18.25" long when the dew shield is fully extended to minimize peripheral glare and dew accumulation.

The striking carbon-fiber refractor tube is nifty to look at, and makes the ED80T CF a lightweight luxury to transport and mount. Weighing in at a mere 5.5 lbs., this is one telescope you won’t have to break your back (or bank account) when considering mounting options. The integrated dovetail mounting base attaches directly to any Orion equatorial (EQ) mount equipped with a narrow, or "Vixen-style," dovetail saddle without the need for additional mounting accessories. While a stable motorized EQ mount is recommended for astrophotographic pursuits, the ED80T CF refractor telescope can be adequately mounted on a wide variety of lightweight sturdy field and photo tripods by virtue of the same integrated dovetail mounting base which features a threaded 1/4"-20 acceptor.

In keeping with Orion's established tradition of offering quality astronomy products at affordable prices, the ED80T CF refractor is offered to you at an amazing value. What's more, we've included top-notch features and accessories which are sure to please even the most discerning apo aficionado. The precision machined Crayford-style telescope focuser provides dual-speed focus adjustment perfect for dialing in delicate details of celestial and terrestrial subjects. The smaller fine focus knob adjusts focus at a rate of 11:1 compared to the coarse focus knob, giving you the ability to home-in on just the right focal point for sharp performance and crystal-clear observations and astrophotos. The included 2" to 1.25" eyepiece adapter allows trouble-free use of higher magnification 1.25" telescope eyepieces or 1.25" imaging cameras and other accessories. For storage and safe transport, everything fits nicely in the included hard case with custom die-cut foam interior.

This is not really a terrible scope, but I thought the previous reviews were a bit too generous, and while happy enough to keep the scope, I was a little disappointed because I bought this scope based primarily on those great reviews. There is also the fact that another Orion scope I own is still the best scope I've ever had, so I thought they may have hit another one out of the park with this scope. For the price, it's not a bad value, but if your thinking your going to get a really good quality APO for an unbelievable price, your going to be disappointed.
Color correction was okay. It would be excellent as an achromat, but as an APO, I'd say it's really only average. Color fringing was visible on bright objects such as Jupiter, or the limb of the moon. Admittedly, I was being picky on the planet, but on the Moon it was really quite clearly obvious, both through the eyepiece and in images. I've seen similar "purple haze" on longer focal length achromats. A shorter focal length APO should have bested that. For wide field long exposure celestial photography it's pretty satisfactory really, but I won't use this scope on the moon for this reason, and one I'll mention later.
There is significan coma. Visually through an eyepiece it's probably acceptable to most observers. However, despite another review to the contrary, the coma was pretty evident off center in my high quality eye pieces. It's not terrible, but it is definitely there if you know what your looking at. For photography however, I found the coma to be totally unacceptable for DSLR sized chips. Not very far off center the stars start elongating out, and they are horrible gashes by the time you get to the edge of the field of view. The coma is faint, but in a longer exposure it stands out and yells at you. At first, I was crushed by this as I expected better. Only then did I purchase the field flattener.
Fortunately, the field flattener does a really excellent job of flattening the field. Really, you should not buy this scope without also getting the field flattener. There is some coma still in the corners, but it's minor even for my picky eye. I was impressed too that the field flattener did not further degrade the color significantly. This was unexpected, and as I said for objects that aren't terribly bright, the color is still pretty decent. Bright stars do also show some color fringing, and I think it is a little bit worse with the corrector. However, the fringing is very small, and you have to examine the stars at 100% to see it, and the color fringing is not very bright. On a wide field image, with just a slight downsampling, it vanishes and I can't detect it at all, even with aggressive image stretches.
Unfortunately, the other side affect of the field flattener is internal reflections. On the moon, there is considerable ghosting. Pretty much useless for imaging I thought. The moon however is exceptionally bright anyway. On a deep sky image, I have yet to find even bright stars ghosting like the moon does.
And well, there you go. Really bright objects (so far, really only the moon) get bounced around, and there is some chromatic aberration. Really, I only found this unacceptable for lunar work though. Nobody should be trying to image the planets through a wide field scope such as this anyway.
Mechanically, the scope is simply beautiful to look at. The retractable dew shield is a nice feature, and I love that the dew cap screws in. Those danged things so tend to pop off at the worst time, and that will never happen with this scope. I put on a set of tube rings for matching to my mount, as I needed a "D" sized dovetail. With the tube rings you can't retract the dew shield. Not an issue with me, but you should note if you do this too, you can't put the scope in it's carrying case with the tube rings on.
The focuser is adequate, but not exceptional as well. There is some image shift when you tighten it down, but there didn't seem to be any corresponding focus shift. That would have been a nonstarter with me. It does tend to slip some over the course of a long image run unless you really crank it down. The fine focus controls do work very well, and there is no play or sloppiness there either.
Another really nice feature is that the whole focuser assembly can rotate. This is nice when you want to frame up something long like M31 or the California Nebula. Again, be sure you tighten it down good though or it will slip as your scope get's slewed over a long imaging run.
Overall, it's not a bad value for the money as long as you get the field flattener, and you are primarily interested in wide field astrophotography or just visual use. I would not recommend it for lunar photography at all. Ditto for planets (the short focal length alone really makes it unsuitable for those targets anyway).
There are a lot of really trashy scopes on the market in this price range. This is not one of them. It's certainly not the APO quality of some of the more premium priced scopes, but in it's price range, while not stellar, it is still quite competitive. I probably would have given it one extra star in the value department if I hadn't had to additionally buy the field flattener.

Favorite object to observe:??Omega Centauri
Pros: good wide field performance, better than average mechanical construction, competitive value
Cons: poor lunar performance, field flattener is a must

Purchased this glass to replace an inexpensive 80mm. From the moment I took it out of the hard case and mounted it I have loved it. It has become my go-to scope. Lightweight, easy to set up (carbon fiber=light and pretty), and the views are spectacular with my ES 30mm. With a 8x24 zoom, I pretty much can navigate the Milky Way all night conditions permitting. No false colors, tight stars and clear edge to edge. Tempted to get into astrophotography based on some of the photos I've seen using the ED80T, just amazing. Good job Orion.

This is simply a great scope. It not heavy, but being a CF tube I would have expected it to be even lighter. But the optics are out of this world. There is simply no chromatic aberration at all on all objects, bright or dim. I use it with the recommended field flattener (without it the field of view has some curvature at the edges) and in that configuration it's my main imaging setup. The only grievance that I find is related to the L-shaped dovetail bar, it's simply too short to balance the scope properly when imaging equipment is attached to the focuser. I had to use an additional dovetail adapter to use my scope properly. Maybe for visual will work fine, but for imaging I recommend putting some rings on it and get rid of that L-shape leg.

Pros: great optics, very portable, awesome for imaging, focuser holds heavy cameras
Cons: the dovetail base is too short
