The complete SkyQuest XX12g Eclipse Kit comes with everything you need for an unforgettable eclipse-watching experience. An awesome telescope setup for the August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse and beyond, this Eclipse Kit includes the Orion SkyQuest XX12g GoTo Truss Tube Dobsonian Reflector Telescope, an off-axis Solar Filter for the telescope, a Light Shroud for the telescope, a 5-pack of Orion Solar Eclipse Safe Viewers, and the Orion 2017 Total Solar Eclipse Viewing Guide.

This Eclipse Kit includes our most advanced 12" Dobsonian reflector telescope. The telescope's huge 12" aperture and f/4.9 optics will amaze you with stunning views of the night sky, plus great views of the Sun with the included solar filter attached. With fully motorized GoTo and tracking drives providing automated pointing to any of the over 42,000 celestial objects in the hand controller's database, the Orion SkyQuest XX12g GoTo Truss Tube Dobsonian is truly a telescope that will keep you up at night - in a good way.

Orion designed the XX12g's optical tube and base with portability in mind. The truss tube can be divided into a small front tube section including the secondary mirror and focuser, rear tube section housing the primary mirror cell, and the four truss-pole pairs. The XX12g telescope optical tube employs a rigid 8-pole truss design that virtually eliminates flexure observed in 6- and 3-pole collapsible tube designs. Stability of the assembled XX12g Dobsonian base is enhanced by its 1" thick composite wood base panels, which are laminated with water-resistant black melamine. We've increased the portability of the XX12g by making the base collapsible for easy no-tools-required disassembly into four separate, smaller pieces for easier transport. The separated component pieces of the XX12g tube and base can be stored without taking up an excessive amount of space in your home, and can be transported in virtually any standard-sized car to your favorite dark-sky observing site.

Altitude and azimuth GoTo motors automatically track the motion of the target object so it stays put in the eyepiece field of view for extended visual study. Forgiving of bumps and nudges, the XX12g features closed-loop electronics allowing manual repositioning, or slewing, of the telescope tube without losing alignment of the GoTo system. Redesigned heavy-duty clutches allow motion in both axes to be adjusted independently to desired level of resistance.

7765 filter

14.21" ID Orion Deluxe Safety Film Solar Filter

Attach this Solar Filter to the SkyQuest XX12g GoTo Dobsonian telescope to enjoy safe views of the Sun. When attached to the XX12g telescope optical tube, an off-axis 4"-diameter safety film filter blocks harmful light for safe solar views. The white-light Solar Filter features Baader AstroSolar Safety Film in a sturdy, clear-anodized aluminum cell. Orion Deluxe Safety Film Solar Filters display a natural, neutral white view of the Sun's surface. Four 1/16" thick, and four 1/8" thick adhesive foam tabs are included with each filter to achieve a proper friction-fit with the telescope. A tight press fit is required for safe solar viewing. NOTE: Be sure to install the included Light Shroud on the telescope for safe solar viewing.

Are you "totality" ready?

We're already excited about the August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse! Events like eclipses certainly don't happen every day, and it's even rarer for the path of totality to be in our own backyard, or just a road trip away. If you want the best views of this rare event, you're in luck! Orion carries a full assortment of glass and safety film solar filters for telescopes and binoculars. We're your one-stop Solar Eclipse shop!

Eclipse Viewers

Orion Solar Eclipse Safe Viewers, 5-Pack

Each Orion Solar Eclipse Safe Viewer features solar polymer film for safe direct viewing of the Sun. The solar film filters out 100% of harmful ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths of light, and they block 99.999% of intense visible light for a relaxing, comfortable and completely safe view of the Sun and the August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse. Since five viewers are included, you can safely share this rare eclipse experience with friends and family so no one feels left out!

Eclipse Guide

Orion 2017 Total Solar Eclipse Viewing Guide

The detailed Orion 2017 Total Solar Eclipse Viewing Guide is packed with useful hints and viewing tips written by eclipse enthusiast Stephen James O'meara to help you enjoy this rare spectacle from beginning to end. From first contact through totality and fourth contact, this guide explains everything you need to know and describes what to look for so you can understand and appreciate this awe-inspiring event.

XX12g base

Collapsible Dobsonian base breaks down for easy portability and efficient storage.

Since its Dobsonian base can be separated into four pieces, the SkyQuest XX12g is a perfect telescope for on-the-go stargazers. GoTo and tracking motors are pre-installed on the base panels, making assembly and disassembly quick and easy. Once the tube and base are assembled, the reflector optical tube attaches to the base with a sturdy dovetail trunnion and locks securely in place with a single captive hand knob. Since all base and truss tube hardware is captive, you don't have to worry about leaving a screw behind after a long night of viewing in the field.

CAUTION: Never look at the Sun, either directly or through a telescope, without a professionally made protective solar filter installed that completely covers the front of the instrument, or permanent eye damage could result. Before using any telescope for solar observing, make sure to install all dustcaps or other protective covers on all optical components such as finder scopes to keep sunlight from passing through them. Glancing through an uncovered optical system, even for an instant, can cause permanent eye damage. Always install protective caps on all optical instruments if left out during daylight hours.

WARNING! When using a truss tube Dobsonian telescope for solar observing, always use a Light Shroud and a properly sized solar filter. When you install the Light Shroud make certain there are no gaps between the Shroud and the telescope where direct sunlight can reach the telescope mirror. When a truss tube telescope (equipped with a solar filter but no Light Shroud) is pointing near (not at) the Sun, direct sunlight can hit the mirror and focus on the solar filter or other portions of the telescope. This can lead to eye injury or damage to the telescope. Using a Light Shroud protects your telescope from peripheral sunlight.
