For finding your way around the starry sky, there's no better tool than a star wheel, also called a planisphere, like the affordable Orion StarTarget Planisphere.

Whether you're skywatching with just your eyes, with binoculars, or with a telescope, a planisphere star chart is an essential tool you’ll use time and time again. It’s an invaluable reference tool for learning the constellations, identifying stars, and locating popular bright celestial objects such as galaxies, open and globular star clusters, and diffuse and planetary nebulas.

The easy to use Orion Star Target Planisphere is a rounded star chart map which you rotate in its housing to dial in the date and time. Once the preferred date and time is dialed in, the Star Target displays a nicely detailed map of the current night sky. You can then rotate the Star Target to get a sneak peek of what objects will become visible as the night goes on, or to see when objects will be ideally positioned in the sky for observation through a telescope or pair of binoculars. It’s easy to plan an entire night of stargazing fun in advance with the handy Orion Star Target, since it can tell you when and where your favorite objects and constellations will be visible.

Our Orion Star Target planisphere features a detailed star map drafted by renowned celestial cartographer Wil Tirion. It shows all constellations visible from mid-northern latitudes ranging from 30° North to 50° North, as well as the locations of 100 showpiece star clusters, nebulas, and galaxies for viewing with binoculars or a telescope. The Star Target’s map works year-round and year after year. On the back of the planisphere are simple instructions plus helpful viewing tips and a calendar of annual meteor showers.

The Star Target is a must for any stargazer, regardless of skill-level, but it is especially useful for beginners. The planisphere is made of coated, dew-resistant cardboard. The disk measures 8-3/8” in diameter, so it’s easy to stow just about anywhere.

A Planisphere is a needed accessory when just learning your way around the sky. I recommend it for any beginner so they can really enjoy the stars and know what they are looking at. A great many of the constellations and Messiers are shown. When you don't have your laptop around, this is a great substitute. I just wish it were a it bigger!

I have a habit of collecting any new planisphere I run across (they are inexpensive), so I have a fair collection of them.
The Orion planisphere is possibly the most cosmetically attractive, and it is a good one for learning the sky, or planning a viewing session.
It is not well designed for actual nighttime use.
As an observing tool it needs to be highly readable in dim red light, a situation where the cone cells that provide high visual acuity are inactive. The small type, combined with the white-on-dark blue background, makes it all but impossible to read. If you crank the light up enough to read it you lose some of your dark adaptation (I highly recommend the Orion RedBeam LED flashlight with its adjustable brightness thumb wheel for night time viewing).
The is another planisphere available that is not as pretty but is designed for nighttime use and is the standard tool of amateur astronomers (its the one you see people with at star parties). It splits the northern and southern horizons into separate views on opposite sides, has larger black on white print, and includes some useful graphical spotting hints.
The review guidelines forbid mentioning competing products - but if you want one to use as a night time viewing tool, you should look further.
But there is no reason not to get this one for daytime use - it is a good choice if you are looking to acquire familiarity with the sky or get others interested in doing so. In my ease of use rating I am splitting the difference between my daytime and nighttime usability, and I am marking this as "recommend" but that comes with important qualifications.
Pros: attractive, informative, well made
Cons: not readable at night
Yes, I recommend this product!

I got this with my first telescope. It is hard to get into, but once you know what you are looking at, it is easy to use. There are a lot of stars on there and it can be kind of hard to find stars if there is a lot of light pollution because the chart shows faint stars too. In that mass of information is also a lot of things that are nice to know. It gives deep space objects and it shows the constellations. It also shows the ecliptic so you will be able to find planets and the moon. Overall it is a great utensil for stargazing regardless of weather you are using a telescope, binoculars, or just your eyes.
Pros: clearly displays information, shows deep space objects
Cons: almost too many stars
Yes, I recommend this product!
