Once I got it connected to my Macbook, Starry Night Pro and figure out that I had to do the two star alignment on the Intelliscope controller simultaneously it worked fantastically. While the intelliscope does a great job on its own it's fantastic to be able to locate an object of interest in Starry and push the scope to it. There just aren't enough objects I like to observe in the Intelliscope that I know by cat numbers yet.
I hVe. Warning to Mac users and a suggestion for Orion though. Finding the correct serial to usb pigtail was tough. Don't bother trying to find one on newegg, just go down to Best Buy and get the Dynex. Orion, why not just make a straight to usb cable and add some length to it? Fixing those two minor issues would have made this a 5/5 for me. The only other suggestion I have is to make Starry Night read the encoder output without the intelliscope controller to make things easier but that may need to be brought up with the software author. That or offer an encoder decoder with cable instead of the full intelliscope controller as it is. Do you really need both if you're using Starry Night or some other application like it?
Favorite viewing location:??Ccausey Reservoir near Ogden, UT
Favorite object to observe:??Jupiter, Andromeda
Pros: ease of use once you learn it, fantastic with starry night, better than just an intelliscope
Cons: mac compatibility (apple's fault really, cable length, adaptor required, two star alignment reqires both at the same time
Yes, I recommend this product!

Simply put, this RS-232 connector cable is reliable and easy to use. Unfortunately, if your computer does not have a serial/DB9/RS-232 port on it (most modern laptops do not), you will need an appropriate RS-232 to USB adapter.
The adapter and cable are of average quality. This isn't a bad thing; the adapter is reliable and does not feel cheaply made. It's just not a premium product either.
I've used this several times with my laptop and my XT8i telescope. My laptop (with red acrylic cover to greatly reduce brightness) helps me find things when the weather is cold and the hand controller becomes difficult to read.
Favorite object to observe:??Nebulas and star clusters
Pros: reliable, easy to use

This item works as intended but its downside is If you are going to use a computer with your telescope you will likely use a laptop , since very few modern laptops have rs-232 ports you will also need a rs-232 to usb adapter which makes this adapter obsolete and inconvenient.

This is supplied with a huge Serial-to-RS-232 adapter while laptops and netbooks use USB ports exclusively. So, you are forced to buy a USB-to-Serial adapter locally, into which you plug the Serial-to-RS-232 adapter, ending up with two adapters between your laptop and scope. That is absurd. Orion should insist that the manufacture supply a USB-to-RS-232 adapter and provide low cost (or, free) replacements to everyone who has purchased this item.
