The custom-designed Orion Mars Observation filter enhances contrast of virtually all surface features. Dielectric coatings transmit violet/blue (<505nm) and orange/red (>615nm) wavelengths where detail is rich, while blocking overbearing yellow/green (515nm-615nm) wavelengths. Polar icecaps appear more sharply defined, and differences in landscape shading are nicely resolved. Polar hazes and cloud cover become visible. The filter's high transmission makes it effective even in small telescopes. This custom-engineered Orion telescope filter comes with a protective plastic case.

In addition to the other reviews here, I wanted to add that I have used this on Jupiter to good effect. It brings out the cloud bands without making the overall image seem to be a dramatically different color.
Although some people love all the colored filters, I think you'll find on the forums that most people do not use them much after purchase due to the inconvenience. So if you are going to consider filters for planetary viewing, something like this Mars filter may be a better choice than a host of separate single-color filters.

This filter changes your view of Mars from a glaring white disk to a dramatic view of polar ice caps and surface patterns. I swung the telescope to the Orion Nebula (M42) and found that this filter works well as a neb filter too. Money well spent.

Not as good as a magenta filter

I had used a Wratten number 30 filter on Mars in the 2003 and 2005 oppositions. For 2007 I bought this filter with hopes that it would be even better. It was a disappointment. The Wratten number 30 filter is better. This one has a bit of 'doubling' of the image due to the two band-passes. This filter does give a more natural look than a yellow or orange filter. Unfortunately the 30-s are only available from one seller. you have to also buy a conversion fixture because the filters have non-standard threads. Even so it's cheaper than this filter.
