The custom-designed Orion Mars Observation filter enhances contrast of virtually all surface features. Dielectric coatings transmit violet/blue (<505nm) and orange/red (>615nm) wavelengths where detail is rich, while blocking overbearing yellow/green (515nm-615nm) wavelengths. Polar icecaps appear more sharply defined, and differences in landscape shading are nicely resolved. Polar hazes and cloud cover become visible. The filter's high transmission makes it effective even in small telescopes. This custom-engineered Orion telescope filter comes with a protective plastic case.

There has been a lot said in regards to this filter, mostly good. I would have to agree. The filter does produce a ???pinkish??? effect on the Planets, (plural, does well in use with the Gas Giants) I believe the filter to be of better use for larger aperture Scopes, though pleasing results were found as low as 114 through 130 mm. The filter isn???t merely another Wratten numbered red or yellow. It has qualities of a Hydrogen and O-III filter for live observation, blocking out certain light waves; not simply ???coloring the Planet???. Well worth the investment. It comes packed well within a individual twist down lid in nearly a 2??? case. Not as much for Astrophotography, best in live observations; which is where you???ll want and need It the most. Another Thanks to Orion for Service and quick Delivery! Clear Skies. . . . Did I mention It works as a Nebula filter as well?
Favorite viewing location:??Back Yard, and Darkness found out of Town
Favorite object to observe:??Star Clusters, Deep Space; Anything "Out There"
Pros: good investment, works well in live observations, quality product, great addition to filter collection, will use it often.
Cons: none
Yes, I recommend this product!

At first I was a little put off by the price of this filter, especially when Orion's rather heavy shipping charge is added. But once I decided to take the plunge, I found that this filter does everything it claims. The detailed view of Mars at the recent March 2012 opposition when using this filter was undeniably the best I've ever had in 3 decades of observations. I'm glad my fears were unfounded.

In addition to the other reviews here, I wanted to add that I have used this on Jupiter to good effect. It brings out the cloud bands without making the overall image seem to be a dramatically different color.
Although some people love all the colored filters, I think you'll find on the forums that most people do not use them much after purchase due to the inconvenience. So if you are going to consider filters for planetary viewing, something like this Mars filter may be a better choice than a host of separate single-color filters.
