This flashlight is extremely helpful. When I go outside I always carry it. With it, I can look at my star maps with using the cellphone's light. Very portable, easy to use, long battery life.

I like that the light can be changed from red to blue, but I'm not fond of this device's tendency to come apart. Whenever I use this, I have to make sure the covering is on over the light bulb end, because it just comes off too easily. Since the interior parts can too easily fall out, I won't hang it around my neck anymore, but just stuff it in my pocket.

I purchased this light in hopes of keeping it in my astronomy toolbox. After the second outing, it broke. Yes, I had it in a case with other accessories and so it was probably banged around, but it should have been more durable than it was. I switched to a headlamp shortly thereafter.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Other reviews have touched on construction: this will fall apart if dropped, but mine has survived to be snapped baclk together 2 or 3 times and is still intact and working; and on brightness: this makes a great dim red light for protecting dark adpation, but doesn't get bright enough for a "walking around" red light. I have some brighter red LED headlamps for walking around that need care in use not to dazzle other observers, not a concern with the Redbeam II. In addition to providing low light level to read white paper charts and protect night vision, you can hang this from a tripod with the long lanyard, set at low intensity, for a discreet tripod warning light. This fills a niche at your scope, eyepiece case or chart; use another brighter light for cleanup or walking around. The basic design has been around 20 years or so for good reason.
Pros: low end of range protects night vision, handy tripod marker or chart light
Cons: not an area light at high end of range
Yes, I recommend this product!
