For so many years the beginning astronomer was forced to buy a telescope mount that was unstable and almost useless when viewing at high power. More often than not, the frustration of using an unstable mount resulted in the telescope only being used for one night and being left in a closet to collect dust. The Vixen Porta II telescope mount changes all that. It is one of Vixen's proudest designs. The combination of smooth movement, rigid design and stable platform makes your first use a pleasure and will bring you back to view more and more of the night sky.

The Vixen Porta II telescope mount comes equipped with two fine adjustment handles for whole circle slow-motion in both directions, very useful in searching and tracking celestial objects. In addition, these are great mounts for terrestrial viewing. Vixen gear drives make it a simple matter to precisely track a planet or ship on the horizon by simply turning the elevation and/or azimuth control handles. The "World-Standard" dovetail attachment system on the Porta II was developed by Vixen. This allows the Porta II to accept various dovetail mounted telescope optical tubes and binoculars. The Porta II mount head is detachable and compatible with all other Vixen tripods.

I received my mount just last week, and due to Spring storms here have only had it under the stars one time, so these are first impressions. First: It holds my 120st refractor securely at any angle, including straight up (!) With the 50mm finder and it's mount, this is about 11 lbs. Second: Motions are smooth, both in fast slew and slo-mo. It takes a definite push, but it is not jerky in movement. Third: Stability seems excellent. I gave the tripod a nudge and the vibration subsided after only 4 or 5 seconds. Add to the above that it looks great and is reasonably priced. This item should be high on the short list of anyone needing an alt-az mount for a medium weight refractor or reflector.
