The 12.5mm Orion Illuminated Plossl Telescope Eyepiece is a vital addition to any astronomer’s equipment collection thanks to its many useful applications.

Acheive precise alignment of computerized GoTo systems easily by using the relatively high-power 12.5mm focal length eyepiece to accurately center alignment stars. The illuminated reticle enables you to precisely center alignment stars and objects in the telescope, thus increasing accuracy of the GoTo system.

The 4-element Plossl design is also well suited for off-axis guiders, where light gathering is minimal, to help ensure tracking accuracy during guided astrophotography sessions. Use the 12.5mm Illuminated Plossl with an off-axis guider (sold separately) to keep a guide star centered precisley to capture tack-sharp astrophotos.

A 4-element Plossl design with fully multi-coated lenses ensures bright views through the illuminated reticle eyepiece. Its 40° apparent field is ideal for multiple functions. The LED-illuminated double crossline reticle has adjustable focus and brightness. Three GP-189 batteries (included) are required for illuminator operation. Also compatible with three SR-54, SG-10, or equivalent button-cell batteries (not included). The Orion 12.5mm Illuminated Plossl telescope eyepiece features a 1.25" barrel diameter, compatible with 1.25" telescope focusers, or 2" focusers equipped with a step-down 1.25" adapter.

19 The 12.5mm Orion Illuminated Plossl Telescope Eyepiece is great for accurately aligning your computerized telescope because the LED illuminated double crossline will tell you when the star is dead center. Also use it for guiding during an exposure.

I ordered this online and it arrived 3 days later. I have a Skyquest XT8i and this makes the 2 star alignment simple. I would not do without this great eyepiece.

I bought the eyepiece in Dec 2010, but it was defective upon receipt. The red LED was intermittent. I was provided a replacement, but now the LED on the replacement does not work after only a year. I am very unhappy with this product.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Before you purchase this item, decide what the main purpose of it will be. It is decent for centering alignment stars for GoTo mounts in the field of view, but if you plan to do some old school manual guiding with this eyepiece, this it NOT what you want.
The dimmest setting on this eyepeice is still WAY to bright. It's like this unit went through engineering and production with NO review or trials of people who would actually be using the item.
If you are looking for a simple, good priced GoTo mount alignment eyepiece then these are good. Plan on only using bright stars though (usually the ones in the database anyway). Tried doing some manual guiding one night and it was terrible. Would not work. Guide stars in the field of view are usually fairly dim. At the lowest setting, the bright red crosshairs made it next to impossible to see the guidestar. WAY too bright. If you want a real eyepiece for manual guiding look in to the RIGEL PulsGuide. It flashes at low illumination for easy dim star guiding. Many settings, evey for dim stars.
Since then have purchase an Orion AutoGuider for my Atlas which is AMAZING for photography.
Favorite viewing location:??Cherry Springs State Park, PA
Pros: goto star alignment
Cons: not for manual guiding
No, I do not recommend this product.

When first purchased this item worked well. After that use it was stored in a customized foam cutout in a hard case. When I attempted to use it a second time, the illuminator didn't work. Thinking I inadvertently turned the illumunator on when I stored it, I replaced the batteries. To my surprise, the illuminator flashed on several times while closing the battery compartment -- even though the switch was off -- and it failed to turn on when the battery compartment was fully closed. It does work *sometimes* when I loosen the battery compartment slightly. Very frustrating!
No, I do not recommend this product.
