3mm Orion Edge-On Planetary Eyepieces bring flat-field performance to solar system viewing in the form of three high-magnification focal lengths. Each employs a sophisticated 7-element lens design reminiscent of exotic, high-priced oculars to provide a sharp focus all the way to the edge of their wide 55-deg apparent field of view. The barrel distortion and field curvature aberrations common in standard telescope eyepiece designs are virtually gone. Edge-On Planetary eyepieces let you push the power, whether you're canvassing the lunar terminator or studying the Jovian cloud belts. The 7-element optics are fully multi-coated for high light transmission, and each eyepiece has 20mm eye relief for viewing comfort. Other nice touches: blackened telescope lens edges, pop-down rubber eyeguards, and barrels threaded for 1.25" filters. Barrel diameter: 1.25".

I bought this eyepiece for high-powered viewing through an Orion 6-inch f/5 newtonian telescope. Under a clear sky with good seeing, the view was awesome. Double stars split nicely and showed good color. Jupiter's cloud bands and Gallilean moons were sharp. The image across the entire field of view was sharp, with very little distortion near the edge, and the short focal ratio of the telescope would contribute to off-axis distortion. This eyepiece compares favorably with eyepieces costing twice as much.
Pros: sharp image, good value for money
Yes, I recommend this product!

I bought this eyepiece to futher my pursuits learning imaging of the planets, (particularly Jupiter as it approaches opposition on October 28), with my Starblast 4.5 Newtonian. I was also looking for a high quality, long eye relief eyepiece that would give me a good reletive magnification without the use of a barlow. The Edge-On Planetary 3mm exceeded my expectations. The optical quality is excellent at 150x. Jupiter and its famed GRS are clear and sharp with no less than 4 belts at any given time as it travels from edge to edge, just as the "Edge-On" name denotes. Imaging with a SteadyPix Deluxe has been very rewarding thus far and I am looking forward to getting the EQ-1M Electronic Drive for longer exposures. My first impression of the eyepiece was that it was huge, but I actually have come to love this fact as well as the nice etched grips. It really feels solid when combined with the SteadyPix Deluxe and digital camera. The Edge-On 3mm also works very well on just about any object of interest. Brighter objects like M-57, M-31 and M-42 have a real 3D feel to them. I am very pleased with this eyepiece. Thanks Orion for yet another great product!

Tom
Took me awhile to find a clear night. On the 18th Aug 2010 at 11 pm EST Whitby, I observed the moon (16 degrees elev) and quite good although I don't have fine focus. Jupiter was at 14 degrees elev and could differentiate 2 moons close together however could get any detail on the planet. With such a low angle it could have been too haevy atmosphere. Alcor (twin stars in the Big Dipper) (34 degrees elevation) was well defined. Planning to do more observations on planets in the future. The Alcor image was clear across the field of the eyepiece.

I am very pleased with the over all performance of the 3mm Orion Edge-On Planetary Eyepiece especially for its edge to edge sharpness, comfortable eye relief and wider field of view with both an 8" SCT and smaller 480mm refractor. It rates similar to other higher priced eyepieces that I have use. The quality of the optics is very good for its price and I found that it is great for "flushing out" faint moons of Saturn or splitting double stars. Over all I found it a very useful high power eyepiece to have on hand and would recommend it to anyone.
