Solid, stable, basic EQ mount

I recently acquired a 5" Mak-Cass optical tube and I needed something much more substantial than a photo tripod to hold it. My old reliable EQ-1 wasn't up to the task so I ordered the Astroview mount. Easy to assemble and set up. The standard-equipmentpolar scope was intuitive and made it a snap to do a polar alignment. The stamped aluminum tripod legs are a concern with heavy scopes because of vibration but not overly so. All in all, it's the best value in a medium-duty manual GEM on the market today.

Nice manual mount. I use it with a 120mm, and two 80mm scopes. Very nice for grab and go viewing. Easy set up, and very easy to use. Nice for those that still like to locate objects the old fashion way. Sturdy, good support, nice accessory tray. Good adjustment range.
Favorite viewing location:??Central Ohio
Favorite object to observe:??Saturn, Jupiter, deep space, etc.
Pros: grab and go, easy set up, sturdy steady adjustable
Yes, I recommend this product!

I studied all the options available to me for an equatorial mount. I was looking for two things that are mutually exclusive in a mount: stability, and light weight.
My rationale is that I am a photographer doing some astrophotography, not an astronomer. Indeed my intended use of the mount was solely to mount a camera with wide angle or telephoto lens to capture, e.g. the Milky Way, the radiant of a meteor shower, or some simple astrophotography.
On one hand, I regret purchasing this mount (more on that in a moment), on the other hand, I must admit that when paired with a single or dual axis drive the tracking is excellent, the stability is very good.
I selected this mount originally because it is the lightest mount that is beefy enough to support my heaviest camera/lens combination. I looked at the EQ-2 and the gulp, wobbly EQ-1 and decided they were not going to be what I wanted. (See my review of the EQ-1 / Astrophotography Bundle).
I like that the mount is solid, tracks well, and yet is NOT a back breaker. Of course, it's also not up to the task of carrying anything but the lightest of scopes and if it has a flaw, that would be it.
Among the other flaws I've noted after using it for many months:
1. The way the drives mount they are exposed to damage - especially the fragile RJ-11 (telephone jack) connectors. I haven't broken that part yet...
2. Again because of the number of shafts sticking out, and fragile motor parts, I've had to be extra careful about transporting it. Alas, one of my buddies tossed his camera bag in my trunk and bent the declination axis shaft. That motor is no longer useful. The damage could have just as easily been done by not removing the slow motion knob, too.
3. I thought I'd love the knurled knob used to tighten down the declination drive motor, but in fact, it came off and was lost in the grass.
4. The RA motor is attached in a way that makes it impractical to disengage. Because of that, there is no way to use the slow motion control on the RA axis. You must either use the clutch or the motor (which sometimes is dreadfully slow - it doesn't slew).
5. 12 pound load limit makes all but the lightest scope/camera combinations impossible.
6. The tripod leg clamps are "lightweight" plastic and certainly will break if overtightened... and/or the thin walled leg tubing will be crushed. Still, it seems to hold securely.
7. The RA circles strike me as "wobbly" and I wouldn't trust them to measure/read my position. The declination circles are difficult to read because there is a black pointer on a black body.
8. The clip on polar scope eyepiece cover likes to fall off.
What's Great:
A. Includes a polar scope! A big help as I've gotten 2 minute and more exposures just by doing a careful polar alignment without any drift nonsense. The Astroview Pro unbundles the polar scope making it more expensive than it appears to be.
B. Solid. Except for the exposed slow motion connectors/axes, it's solidly built.
C. Lightest of the "sturdy" solutions.
D. Withstood 35 mile an hour winds and kept on tracking without wobbling. The gusty wind literally blew my fold up chair over, but the mount stood still.
One word of caution: Beware... I once went to rotate the whole unit to get better Northern orientation. In the process I inadvertently disengaged the RA clutch and got a helluva pinch between the head and the body of the mount. OUCH.
About my regret: Well, it's not really a regret, but I ended up purchasing the Sirius mount, too, because my lust for photons has grown. HOWEVER, so far I've managed to get better tracking accuracy out of my Astroview than my SIrius mount. Haven't exorcised those tracking demons from the Sirius mount as yet. The other problem is now I regularly travel with TWO mounts in my car.
Favorite object to observe:??DSO's of any kind.
Pros: solid, great load to weight ratio, included polar scope, inexpensive
Cons: exposed drive axes, limited load, not expandable to guiding
Yes, I recommend this product!

I bought this mount as part of a package with the Astroview 6-inch Newtonian reflector. I have also put a 5-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain on this mount. It works fine with both telescopes.
The tripod and mount are solid and work well. I have not had a problem with the tripod leg-height adjustment screws that other people have reported, but you do need to be careful not to over-tighten them.
Polar alignment is straightforward and fairly easy. My only complaint is that you have to remove the optical tube and the counterweights to rotate the whole mount to line up the polar scope with the sky. It would work better if you could just rotate the reticle of the polar scope within the mount.
This is my first equatorial mount, and I already much prefer it to my older manual altazimuth mount. Moving the telescope through declination and right ascension makes it much easier to stay oriented to an atlas and to star hop. And unlike an altazimuth mount, it's easy to point this mount at objects that are directly overhead, where the seeing is best. On the down side, navigating by the small setting circles on this mount only puts you in roughly the area of sky you want to look at, not any better than you can do with an atlas and your eyeballs.
I also bought a single-axis right ascension clock drive, so that the telescope will track objects over time. This is a great enhancement, although the quality and features of the Orion drive leave something to be desired.
Pros: good value for money, solid construction
Cons: inelegant polar alignment
Yes, I recommend this product!
