Item #  09895

We love those premium "apo" refractors as much as the next guy. We just don't think you should have to work a second job or put the family heirlooms on eBay to own one. Now you won't, thanks to our amazingly affordable Orion 80mm Extra-Low Dispersion Refractor Telescope Optical Tube.

It's a sweet telescope all right. With a focal length of 600mm (f/7.5), the "ED80" is wonderfully suited for visual applications on both solar system and deep-sky objects as well as for prime-focus astrophotography and charge coupled device or, "CCD" imaging.

It sports a multi-coated 80mm objective lens doublet, one element of which is crafted from Extra-Low Dispersion, or "ED" optical glass. This high-grade glass greatly reduces the chromatic aberration inherent in standard achromats. Images appear more sharply focused and color fringing around bright objects is lessened dramatically.

The objective lens is held in a machined, black anodized aluminum cell and shaded by an aluminum dew cap. Internal tube baffles ensure high contrast and prevent ghosting.

The ED80mm features a superb, backlash-free 2" Crayford-style focuser, which accepts both 2" and 1.25" diagonals. Notice the focus wheels: classy, brushed-aluminum hubs with ridged rubber grip rings. Nice touch. Set the focuser tension or lock it for imaging with the focus lock knob. The molded-in dovetail base accepts the optional Orion finder scope of your choice. Tube has a built-in 1/4"-20 plate.

At a length of just 24", the ED80mm is extremely portable. And at an affordable price so the rest of us can enjoy the pleasures of a premium refractor without the pain of the premium price!

Sold as optical tube assembly only, without accessories. Compatible tube rings are #7371, sold separately. Finished in gunmetal gray metallic.

While the telescope is small, it offers incredible views that rival my 10" astrograph. With the optional tube rings, I was easily able to attach the ED80 to my CGEM mount. Portability and setup is easy, and the wide field of view is incredible. Terrestrial photography is on par with high-quality and much more costly super-telephoto lenses. The only problem is there is no easy way to lock the focuser. It would be better if there were a knob instead of a hex nut to lock it down. I highly recommend this to beginning astrophotographers and anyone looking for a grab-and-go scope.
Favorite viewing location:??Chickasaw National Recreation Area
Favorite object to observe:??M51
Pros: portability
Cons: cannot easily lock the focuser
Yes, I recommend this product!

This is an excellent telescope. I have dreamed of owning this telescope since I was eight years old and went to the observatory for the first time. I have not been able to use it much yet because of the weather but what I saw was amazing. The kid who was helping me to put it together swore when he looked through it and saw the mountains on the moon.
Favorite viewing location:??from my yard in the desert
Favorite object to observe:??Nebula
Yes, I recommend this product!

This was my first telescope that I used when starting astrophotography and I still go back to it when I want to image at 600mm f.l. I strongly suggest flocking the inside of the focuser with self-adhesive flocking material to reduce contrast and reflections of bright off-field stats. This scope also works great as a guide scope with large aperture imaging scopes.
I have recommended this scope to many club members who are getting started in AP.
Favorite viewing location:??Blue Canyon, CA, but anywhere where it's dark!
Favorite object to observe:??Nebulas and galaxies.
Pros: good optics, solid focuser
Cons: needs better baffling in the focuser path, can't collimate front element
Yes, I recommend this product!
