Orion Multiple-Filter Wheel for 1.25in. Filters
Reviewer: J. Porrello
Be aware that, although this filter wheel
is very well made and I have NO
complaints there, because of the extra
inward focus travel required (stated as
20mm) to compensate for the addition of
the filter wheel in the light path, that
far away objects are no longer able to
be sharply focused, at least on my
Orion 90mm F/10.1 Refractor. There
simply isn't enough inward focus travel
left to compensate! I am therefore
unable to view Stars and Other Deep
Space Objects with the filter wheel in
place with my Light Pollution and
Nebular Filters installed which is why I
purchased it in the first place! I could
barely get the mountains 20 miles away
from my home in focus. I can't
comment on other tubes not knowing
their measurements.
Orion needs to FULLY REVEAL which of
their telescopes have enough focus
travel for this otherwise fine item to be
used, as you may get stuck with one
like I did. This item should be pulled
from sale until a full disclosure of the
compatible products is in the product
description! Just telling someone it
needs 20mm more travel doesn't mean
JACK to a novice!
Note from Orion: Regrettably, it is not
possible to provide a complete list of
telescopes that are compatible with the
filter wheel. Different accessories will
result in wide variances in the amount of
travel required. All cameras have an
inconsistent amount of back focus
required, whether the camera is coupled
to the telescope via t-threads or a t-
adapter will affect the distance from the
focal plane, visual setups that use a
diagonal, and wide field vs. standard
eyepieces are some examples why a
specific product list is not practical.
When using a telescope with an external
focuser you can see if there is an
available 20mm of travel. Most
Cassegrains have an abundance of
travel and adding accessories is not
usually an issue.

Excellent value for the money. Works
with my Meade DSI, II, III and my
Imaging Source mono webcam. Detents
make it easy to index the next filter.
Easily user modifiable to automate with
Robo Focus motor or similar USB
controlled motor. Rugged cast aluminum.
No internal reflections from shiny
interior.

Great item, protects filters for the
most part except for small area by the
selector area.
Excellent build quality, metal
construction,weighs about 15 OZ. with
filters installed. Make sure filters are
screwed in all the way to keep the
movement smooth.

Like most things, I suppose, there are
pluses and minuses to the filter wheel.
Like the box says, you could have a
problem reaching focus if you have a
Newtonian reflector. I have the Orion
Skyquest 10 and I seem to recall a phone
conversation where the tech person said
it should be no problem adding the
filter wheel to that scope. Well..
fortunately, I also have a bino-viewer
and I used the OCS cell from it in front
of the wheel to help reach focus. Once
that problem was solved, it was indeed
nice and easy to view objects through
various filters with just the flick of
your wrist.

Well this is a very nice upgrade for me
because I was using a Meade DSI-Pro II
with the filter slide and all of my special
filters were always collecting
dust, dew, dirt and finger prints plus extra
light passed through the filter slide!..no
good!, but with the Orion Filter Wheel
most of these problems are gone but
where you turn the filters, it does let
some light pass through and dust!, so I
need to make a cover for the side of the
Filter Wheel!, My Filter Wheel has one
more problem, when turning the dial
between 4-5 the filters drag against the
housing??, the filters are all screwed in
the same so its not a filter problem!, the
wheel inside must be warped?, I didnt
bother to send it back because of the
wait time, but I keep the back screws
just tightened down enough so they just
barely touch the housing, so not a big
deal!, the filter wheel also comes with a
nice padded box that makes a great
case!..all in all I love the filter
wheel and
plan on buying another for narrow-band
imaging, and maybe another for just
plane old color filters!, so you can see
I'm
happy with my wheel :-)
note..this requires too much in-focus to
be used on a reflector like my 8" f/4.9!,
maybe a 0.5x focal reducer will correct
this, but I haven't used one to make sure!

I recently purchased your Orion Multiple
5 - Filter Wheel and want to say "Well
Done". I am finding the biggest asset is
the time it saves in not changing filters
all the time! The ease of switching from
filter to filter is now at my fingertips, it
really has been hassle free and fun to
use. I can hardly wait to try it with the
Star Shooter 2 Deep Space CCD
Camera.
I'll keep you posted,

The multiple 5-filter wheel is so easy to
use, it makes picture taking easy. It's a
bit heavy for my telescope but it's great
having all the filters right there at my
finger tips

The multiple 5 filter wheel has proved to
be an excellent addition to my
astronomical gear. I had multiple filters
which I rarely used because I had to
locate the correct one, screw it into the
eyepiece and remount the unit in the
telescope. Now I leave the unit on the
scope and have four filters available at
my finger tip (keeping the fifth open).
After using the filter wheel for a standard
color set I purchased a second unit to to
hold my oxygen III, hydrogen alpha and
beta filters and a neutral density filter.
Since I keep one on my C11 and the
other on my AP 140 dirt, finger prints
and moisture does not get on the filters.
A useful and well engineered product
that could be improved if the numbers
on the device were in luminous paint.

Very well made accessory and works as
advertised. It's now a snap changing
filters while doing multiple filter imaging.
No need to remove camera from the
telescope anymore. It does use up a
little bit of inward focus travel, but works
fine with my scopes and DSLR setup.
Good product.

Excellent product. No complaints
Except: This product really really needs
a brass compression ring for holding the
eyepieces.

I enjoy the convenience of not having to
change filters. I spend less time setting
up to observe and more time observing.
It seems to made very well too. The only
con I find is when changing from
observing without the filter wheel to
installing the filter wheel, I have to
adjust my focuser quite a bit to get
things into focus, once (that is done)
there (is) no problem. Good product.
