Upgrade your standard SkyView Pro telescope with a computerized GoTo system that automatically locates and tracks more than 42,900 targets with pushbutton ease. The convenient GoTo hand controller features intuitive menus for easy target acquisition. Dual stepper motors slew the telescope at 3.4-deg per second to center your target in the eyepiece. The kit installs easily and requires no modification to the telescope mount. Includes two motors, motor control box, and hand controller. Requires a 12-volt DC power source or an AC power adapter. Please note that SkyView Pro telescope mounts purchased before mid-2004 are not upgradeable.

For owners of the Orion SkyView Pro EQ GoTo Mount whose version of the GoTo hand controller is 3.0 or greater, the GoTo hand controller's firmware can be updated over the internet.

Updating the GoTo Hand Controller's Firmware
From version 3.0 and up, the GoTo hand controller's firmware can be updated over the internet.

System Requirements

  • GoTo hand controller version 3.0 or greater
  • Windows95 or later
  • An available RS-232 COM port on the PC
  • Computer interface cable (supplied)
  • DC power supply (7.5V to 15V @ 100mA or greater output with 2.1mm tip positive plug)

Preparing the Computer for the Update

  1. Create a folder where you will store the files necessary for the update.
  2. Click on the Download Firmware Files link below and save the Firmware Loader program to the folder you have created on your computer. You will need to download this program only once; after it is saved on your computer, only the firmware data file is needed for future updates.
  3. Download and save the firmware update date file to the folder you created. The file will be named OrionVxxxxEQ.ssf, where xxxx indicates the version number of the firmware.

Updating the GoTo Hand Controller

  1. Plug the modular plug end of the computer interface cable into the middle jack in the hand controller. Plug the serial connector end of the cable to the COM port on your PC.
  2. Press and hold down the 0 and 8 numerical buttons simultaneously, then plug the power supply into the hand controller's DC power jack. The hand controller will beep and display "SynScan Update Ver. x.x" on the LCD screen.
  3. Run the Firmware Loader program on your computer.
  4. Click on the "Browse" box and select the OrionVxxxx.ssf file location where it was saved previously on your computer.
  5. Click on the "Update" button, and the new firmware will begin loading into the hand controller. The Firmware Loader will show the progress of the update on your computer screen. It will usually take approximately 5 minutes for the new firmware to load into the hand controller. It may take significantly longer if a serial-to-USB adapter is employed on your computer.
  6. When the download is complete, the Firmware Loader will display "Update Complete".

The firmware in the GoTo hand controller has now been updated. You can click on the "HC. Version" button to confirm the new version number of the firmware (and possibly the database, but the hardware version will not change with internet updates).

Note: If the error message "Can not connect to a SynScan hand control" appears on your computer, check all cable connections. Also, try closing all other computer programs that might be attempting to use the COM port.

Note: If the error message "Firmware update failed..." appears on your computer, remove the power plug from the hand controller, and then reconnect it. Now, repeat the firmware update procedure.

By default, the data communication rate between the GoTo hand controller and the computer is 115kbps. The RS-232 port on some PCs may not support this high data transfer rate. If the firmware update procedure fails after a few tries, try reducing the data transfer rate by pressing the SETUP button on the hand controller. This will reduce the data transfer rate to 9.6kbps. The controller's LCD screen will show "Lo" in the lower right hand corner to indicate the lower transfer rate setting. The firmware update procedure remains the same except it will take much longer for the firmware to load into the hand controller.

Please note this product was not designed or intended by the manufacturer for use by a child 12 years of age or younger.

The GoTo worked great for 6 months till one of the motors went out. So I sent it into customer service to get it fixed and I suppose they just sent me back the same one, because I kept having the same problem. Wonderful tracking though. I have to wonder if they sell individual motors cheap somewhere though.

I'm very happy with my up grade kit. Installation took me about 1/2 hour, and it was only that long cause I had to remove the duel drive that was on the mount. Installation manual was as clear as possible for the fine points. The system worked well first time out. My only minor criticism is that it was difficult to determine if my mount was upgradable. It was, and I am a happy customer. Bill Schaefer

I purchased the GoTo kit for my used skyview pro 8" telescope. It had the motors on but I replaced them as the new ones have a different plug for the motor control box. The new motors were pretty solid and beefy but went on without much issue. Instructions were very clear and installation took about 30 minutes. At first I was having trouble with the scope tube hitting the stand and causing the GoTo to buck and complain. THAT was nasty. Turns out I just had to balance the tube and doing that got it out of the way of the tripod legs. The gears/motors are, for the most part, quiet except at some angles, but that's a minor detail. If you use high power lenses, alignment gets more accurate. find the object in your low power, switch to high and make corrections, save and move on! I was finally able to find Messier objects once I got the GoTo working! Astrophotography is now possible with the image holding still in the eyepiece! Overall, I am very happy with the purchase!

This upgrade kit was very easy to install and the total time needed for me was under an hour! the r/a and dec motors are very high quality and when the drives are slewing at high speed it makes a very soft humming sound!, not like other brands that sound like coffee grinders! the hand controller has some pretty neat features like air tempture and volts from your power pack and once you set your location it keeps it in the memory!, all you need to do is correct the time and date!, the Go-To is almost perfect but it would be perfect if i could set my mount up in the same position every use!, a peir is on my wish list!!, over all i love this upgrade!, it was over my budget but since i dont know where anything is and im doing astroimaging, this is a must!, you can train the PEC which takes 10 min's!, the manual says 8 min's but its 10!, the controller has backlash control for both drives and the autoguider port works very easy when i bought the shoestrings usb auto-guider kit!, i have this puching a 8" f/4.9 and a 80mm f/11 as a guidescope!, all works great and the SVP mount holds the 26lb load! and no strain on the Go-To motors!..im very pleased with my upgrade!
