  • Barrel diamter 1.25". Threaded for filters. One-year limited warranty

Now you can enjoy comfortably long eye relief, a wide 55° apparent field, and brow-raising resolution from a telescope eyepiece that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. This remarkably affordable Orion Epic eyepiece is the ticket. And you can thank ED for making it so good.

Excellent Color Correction
No, ED is not Orion's resident optics whiz. "ED" stands for "Extra-low Dispersion" optical glass, a special grade of glass that boasts superior refractive properties compared to standard optical glass. In fact, ED glass is the same type used in many expensive camera lenses and high-end refractor telescopes costing several thousand dollars!

An Orion exclusive, this 5.1mm Orion Epic ED-2 Telescope Eyepiece features a six-element lens design in which two of the elements are crafted from ED glass (hence, ED-2). This allows the Epic eyepiece to provide a luxurious 20mm of eye relief with remarkably reduced chromatic aberration and excellent sharpness. Long eye relief means that even if you wear eyeglasses, you can take in the full, unconstricted field of view. Which is a generous 55° — a wider apparent field than that of Plossl telescope eyepieces! Notice also that this eyepiece sports a nice, wide eye lens — not a small peep-hole! Another advantage of this Epic's unique optical design.

Parfocal and Fully Multi-Coated
The eyepiece is fully multi-coated (every air-to-glass lens surface is multi-coated) for maximum image brightness, and the lens edges are blackened for improved contrast. The Orion Epic telescope eyepiece series is parfocal, so little or no refocusing is needed when switching from one Epic eyepiece to another.

The eyepiece housings are precision machined from aluminum and clear-anodized to a lustrous finish. A black rubber traction ring ensures a secure grip, and a soft rubber eyeguard helps position your eye and block out stray light. The barrel features a setscrew recess for added security, and it's threaded on the inside to accept 1.25" filters. The eyepiece comes with two end caps and a durable plastic case.

This Orion Epic telescope eyepiece is ideal for viewing all types of astronomical objects, from planets to nebulas and galaxies.

With performance that's a definite step above Plossls, for a price that's not much higher, the Orion Epic ED-2 telescope eyepiece represents an exciting new entry in affordable, quality eyepieces.

5.1mm Orion Epic ED-2 Eyepiece
Reviewer: Brian
I have purchased many Orion products over the years and have been quite satisfied, however, I must say I am most displeased with this eyepiece. I have several 5mm and 4mm eyepieces within the collection, and by far, the Orion Epic was a disappointing piece. It seemed to blur most observed objects, and at times would delude the light of an object. I hate having to say this, but I do not recommend this eyepiece.

The 5.1mm Epic ED-2 eyepiece is of excellent quality. It gives wonderful high magnification, when the atmosphere allows. It has good crisp clean field of view, and is a pleasure to use. I also, have the 3.7mm and 14mm Epic ED-2. All three give a great view through my telescope. The price is very affordable, compared to some other eyepieces, and the quality is just about equal. So if you want to upgrade from Plossl eyepieces or you just want more to add to your arsenal, I would without a second thought suggest Orion's Epic ED-2 eyepieces. I plan on also, getting the 25mm Epic ED-2 to add to my astronomy gear.

I am using this eyepiece on a Celestron 9.25 and so far it is performing quite well. Just need a lot more time and some clear skies using the eyepiece to really give it a good eval. The only thing I am disappointed in it would be such a small lens opposite the viewing end, would like to see more glass there for better light gathering.

It may be me or the atmosphere not sure but I can't get a sharp focus with this eyepiece and for 55 degree of view it seems a lot less then that. I am using a Celestron 9.5 scope.
