Orion StarShoot Solar System Color Imager III
Reviewer: Earl Foster
I am pleased with the camera. After
downloading that latest patches and
working with tech support we were able
to install the drivers and applications on
my Windows Vista 32 machine and on
my Windows 7 Ultimate by changing the
setup programs properties to use
Windows XP SP2 capability mode.
Camera works great and takes nice H-
Alpha solar pictures and videos. Tonight
I will try to capture an IIS flyby. I would
recommend this camera for the beginner
wanting to capture planetary images.

The software for the camera would not
load on my Windows Vista 32 Bit
computer, even after I reformated my
machine and checked the usb hubs etc.
This is the second product I had to send
back because they fell short of
expectations. To return these products
cost $ and I cannot afford this, only to
end up with nothing. I need a autoguider
and don't know if I can chance it with
Orion. I'm sorry and disappionted,
Edward Gontar.
(Note from Orion: We have discovered
that there is a compatibility issue
between the software driver and the
camera for recent shipments of the
StarShoot Solar System Camera III.
This can cause difficulty installing the
camera on your computer. We are
preparing a new driver which should be
available for download from our website
by 6/4/10).

I purchased this camera on January 6,
2010 after reading the reviews that were
available to me at the time through this
site. I knew the camera is only for short
exposure (bright Solar System objects,
such as the moon and planets) and knew
the included USB cable was only 5 feet.
All of this aside, I got a chance to try out
the camera on February 27th for the first
time. I used it to take .avi movies of the
moon and Saturn. It performed very
well. I have not processed any pictures
yet out of the .avi files but have viewed
all of movies so I know the quality is
good on all videos. The live view feature
works well for establishing focus. This
camera has 1 drawback however. When
I first tried to use the camera, it was on
the 4.5" F/4 Orion Starblast telescope.
This is too fast a scope for this imager
for taking videos (pictures) of the full
moon. It was almost impossible to
resolve detail at the fast F/4 nature of
the scope - the moon was a blaring white
disk in which it was almost impossible to
get any details. It did take me a while to
figure this out (with the help of a phone
call to an "Astro Buddy"). Once the
camera was placed in my Meade LX200
(F/10) is when the camera sang and
very good views and video of the full
moon came out. I then turned the scope
to Saturn (albeit the full moon washed
out all of the colors of Saturn). I did not
try the camera on Saturn from the
Starblast, so I can't say with any
certainty whether or not Saturn would
have worked at the fast F/4.
In conclusion, the camera is easy to use,
provides a larger image (1280x1024) 1.3
megapixel. This is what interested me,
this provides an image 3X the size of the
Meade LPI imager (which is a good
camera, just a smaller picture than the
Orion). This is a light weight camera, so
counterweights are not necessary after
mounting the camera on the nosepiece
unless you are using a heavy barlow for
closer pictures.

i bought this camera about a year ago, I
use it every chance I get in hope of
taking a good pic. No luck so far. I have
tryed every way possable, to get Jupiter,
Mars, and Saturn, but the best pic. I can
get with it is a pixelated dot even with
stacking tens, hundreds, and thousands
of images. I have used this camera with
three different scopes of different amp.
Barlows, and still no luck. I can say that
this camera is very good for Moon shots.
As for the cord that it comes with, Im
sorry but Orion needs to learn how to
read a tape measuer it is not 5 foot long
mine is only 3 foot 4 inches, very short.
When I bought this camera the add said
it accepts filters this is not so, and you
do need a moon filter for moon shots or
you get a big white blob. The program is
ok but other than the stacking, you can
prosses your pics. just as good with the
paint program that comes with every
computer. If you want to take nothing
but moon pics. this is the camera for
you, otherwise your better off with a $10
camera from the drug store

THe USB connector failed during normal
use and the imager became non
operational. Returned for refund.

One of my teachers at Albion Middle
School bought one of these cameras
because every other camera on the
market today is mostly over $1000. This
camera just couldn't seem to pick up any
of the light from the Andromeda Galaxy,
and was only good for pictures of Jupiter
that night, the brightest dot in the sky.
(Note from Orion: This camera is intended
for imaging the moon and planets only and
is not specified for deep space objects.)

If Orion wants an honest review here is
one, a bit critical but honest.
Well I ordered and received the imager
in just a few day. Was very excited to
try and capture Jupiter. And capture I
did, using Vista32 bit OS no techincal
problems anywhere. Software load was
a breeze and it just needed to 'update'
my Maxim already used from the Orion
SSP I use for other stuff. The imager i
give a 10 and the capture part of maxim
gets same - easy and problem free.
Maxim is OK for capture but NOT for
processing workflow to get an image.
Many of the problems this program has
for processing fits images for dso are
only far worse when trying to process an
AVI stream. In fact maxim is absolutely
terrible for AVI and wish Orion would not
even recommend it for anything but
capture - it takes away from the
experience rather than adding to it. I
recommend using RegiStax.
The cable included is comically short -
maybe 3'?? and you'll immediately want
to buy a longer one from your local
store, or buy an extension.
(Note from Orion: the supplied cable is
specified to be 5 feet long.)

Just got this yesterday and took some
images of Saturn under not so ideal
conditions. They turned out better than I
thought. This is a nice little camera and
the software installs so easily. No
problems at all...I prefer this over the
Meade LPI which Ive used in the past.
