Orion Giant View 25x100 Astronomy Binoculars
Reviewer: Rick Aragon
Being a newbie at astronomy it took me
quite awhile to decide on a binocular. I
went to several web sites, bought books
and mags. But I settled on the 25x100
Orion. The best decision I could make.
They are heavy but with a bino mount
they are great. If you can afford these I
strongly recommend them. I take them
everywhere I go just in case I feel like
looking.

orion giant view binocular for giant
expectations. If you want to feel nearest
to the sky glory you have two ways: be
a star or look through Orion Giant View
Binocular.

I bought these for wide field sweeps of
the milky way under the dark skies and
high altitudes of gypsum colorado. They
serve their intended purpose perfectly.
For the price, these are a great value.
Deep Sky Objects are nice and bright, as
one would expect from 100mm
objectives. I won't lie and say these are
the best optics available. However, the
price for higher quality optics of this
size
are an order of magnitude more costly.
The optics account for the four star
rating. Don't let this scare you away
from these, the optics are acceptable
quality, not excellent. As for
construction, fit and finish all are
excellent. The included aluminum
carrying case will make these a treasure
for years to come.

These binoculars are great. Just as
described...
I've only used them for daytime viewing
so far
but since the images are tack sharp, I'm
sure
that night time observations will be
great! The
only complaint I have is against the
carrying
case that Orion sent me. The case is of an
inferior construction and easily
warps/bends with
any applied pressure. I also found
rust on the
metal latches on the inside and the foam
lining
wasn't well glued to the inner walls
(not to
mention that the key was missing!)
Because of
this, I decided to give the product 4 stars.

My first view through these binoculars
was very disappointing because they were
vertically out of alignment to the point
of seeing a double image - one on top of
the other. But I am aware that some
binoculars have two set screws, one over
each prism under the rubber covering
near the eyepiece end of the binoculars.
Luckily, yours had them, so that with
just an eyeglass screwdriver a slight
turn of just one of the set screws
aligned the binoculars. Now I can tell
you that
these are the best large binoculars I
have ever seen. I also own a pair of
Apogee 25X100's which are out of
alignment, but do not have the alignment
set screws. Your Giant View binoculars
are longer (which I think gives a larger
area of sharp imaging), but lighter in
weight. The reduction of clarity and
increase in the curvature of field as
you look away from the center is much
less than in any large binoculars I have
ever seen. The eye relief is very large
which means that eyeglass wearers like
me easily see the entire field of view.
Splitting double stars is great due to
the high optical sharpness. The moon is
glorious. The Orion Nebula is impressive
and the Pleiades Star Cluster is fantastic.
I conducted a very successful Feb 20
Total Lunar Eclipse Party on the beach.
These 25x100's were the big hit of the
night. The sharpness, large size,
brightness and varied coloring of the
moon were so amazing. Also there was an
8.5 magnitude star near the moon which
was easily seen in these binoculars and
not in anybody elses.
The mechanical aspect of adjusting the
position of the binoculars over the
tripod via the slide rod for proper
balancing and height is smoother and
more efficient than I have ever used before.
Finally, I have always had trouble
keeping the objective lens covers on. I
have spent many hours over the years
trying to find lost covers in the sand.
The Giant View covers attach to the
Inside of the lens cell rather than
going over the outside. This unique
setup apparently creates a partial
vacuum which holds the covers on tightly.
These are great binoculars especially
for astronomy. I can hardly wait to see
a Total Solar Eclipse in them.

The Giantview's are *not* the 25x100's
sold by Orion a few years ago under
the "Explorer" name and should not be
confused as such. These newer
binoculars are updated, imparting only
slight chromatic abberation, come to
sharp pinopint focus, and have excellent
edge correction. The Giantview binos
are a welcome improvement over the
earlier Explorer model. The large
aperture Giantview binoculars give
AWESOME two-eyed views of the lunar
landscape during partial phases. All in
all a wonderful bargain. Requires the
solid XHD mounting. Great for daytime
use over long distances as well.

I bought these 25x100's a few years ago
from Orion. For the money they are a
great value. They are great for
astronomy and terrestrial viewing.
Focus is alright, but not tack sharp. It
gives really bright pictures, with some
halo around brightly colored objects.
They are sure to bring out detail in far
landscapes for a great price.
