Celestron NexStar 8SE GoTo Schmidt Cass Telescope
Reviewer: James Geis
I'm an intermediate level user and have owned my NexStar 8 SE for 1.5 years now, having upgraded from a cheap 6" Newtonian reflector. I like to see lots of things on a starry night - planets, galaxies, star clusters. I'm also impatient, so I don't have the knack for doing photography, nor do I like spending an hour setting up and taking down the scope. I'm very happy with my purchase. Here's why: Optics are okay for an inexpensive Schmidt-Cassegrain. Much better quality than my old Newtonian. I've seen better views in high-end SCTs, but I'm not complaining. There's very little maintenance needed for this scope. All the optics are enclosed in the tube. My old scope constantly needed adjustments, while the mirror got dirty easily too. For the NexStar I would recommend getting the optional dew shield, as it improves contrast and keeps dew off your front lens. The GoTo sytem is easy to learn. At first it took me awhile to do alignment, but nowadays I can align it in 2-3 minutes. I like using the two star alignment (you'll need to learn some star names). GoTo isn't exact but gets you in the ballpark most times with your lowest power eyepiece. Once centered it tracks pretty well. Sometimes you need to hold down the arrow keys a few seconds before the telescope's gears engage. Some have complained about this, but it has never been bothersome to me. The mount is single arm alt-az, which is quite sturdy for its size, though it is a little susceptible to shaking in windy conditions. I wouldn't recommend it for astrophotography. If that's your thing, a sturdy EQ mount might be a better choice for you. Portability is by far its best feature. This 8" SCT scope weighs just 33 lbs. It's a snap to set up and take down. It's also a lifesaver if you have back problems like I do. Overall - a great buy for the money. Outstanding portability means you will get much use out of it.

Love the scope. Always wanted an 'orange tube' Celestron 8 inch scope, ever since I was a kid. The price was right, the service was excellent, and the shipping was precise. No problems with the scope, or it's assembly. I have already spent several hours with it, getting it calibrated and getting used to it. I can't wait for cooler weather to come along around here so that the summer sky-haze goes away at night. Thanks for the great buying experience.

I'm a beginner. They have 'Star Nights' here and I enjoyed seeing Saturn and Jupiter for the first time plus they have an interesting lecture. So I bought the little mak 90. I couldn't really see much with it so I called Orion and they allowed me to trade the little Mak back in for full credit on the Nex Star 8SE. It was really easy to get together and in 15 minutes I was out looking at the observatory 20 miles away on the mountain top. I also used the building there to align the finder scope which is excellent with the red light. I've had some issues, it wasn't level enough (very important) and I was only using the finder scope for the alignment which isn't good enough. But it works pretty good, still have an issue with it ending up off but I think it has to do with time zone, maybe, and I can't figure out why it always goes left and will go almost 360 degrees to the right instead of going 5 or 10 degrees left. I'm also learning that the darker it is the better. Stray light makes it difficult. Very pleased with the Nex Star 8SE and Orion as a company. Doug Teeter Green Valley,AZ

PROS: go to, and tracking ability. excellent optics, 250x gives excellent planetary views and even at 400x still very good. very large object database. easily powered by 8 aa ni-mh hybrid 2100 mah rechargable battery's. I liked my 60mm celestron goto scope so much, i bought this one. worth the money. CONS: some what noisey motors. In cold weather, scrolling words hard or impossible to read. more double stars should of been included in the constellation tour section.

Great Scope! Good for overall use; i.e. deep space and planetary. Strong construction and great optics. Recommended.
