Two facts: 1) You'll get the best images from a Newtonian reflector if its optics are in precise alignment, 2) a laser collimator virtually always results in a more precise optical alignment than a sight-tube collimator.

It fits in a 1.25" focuser and emits a beam of red laser light into the telescope. The beam reflects off the secondary and primary mirrors and right back onto the bottom of LaserMate. If the beam hits the hole where it was emitted, the optics are in perfect alignment. If it misses, you just tweak the mirror angles until it hits. Easy as target practice!
LaserMate allows collimation to be performed in daylight or at night, whereas sight tube crosshairs are difficult to see in the dark. It's also more compact than most laser collimators: just 3" long. It takes up no more space in an accessory case than an eyepiece
