Meade Coronado Personal Solar Telescope with Case
  • Specialized "H-alpha" solar telescope reveals dramatic prominences, flares, filaments, granularity, plages, and other solar phenomena!
  • The PST is the most affordable hydrogen-alpha solar telescope on the market
  • Internal etalon filter transmits only hydrogen-alpha light (656.3nm), with a bandpass of <1.0 Angstrom
  • Internal blocking filters reject all unwanted and harmful radiation, for completely safe viewing
  • Weighs only 3 lbs., so requires only a small telescope mount or sturdy camera tripod for support

The Sun's got a lot going on, and the Meade Coronado Personal Solar Telescope with Case will show you. By zeroing in on the far red end of the Sun's light spectrum - the hydrogen-alpha line at 656.3nm to be exact - the PST reveals a star roiling with violent, ever-changing activity. Best of all, the PST's innovative design allows H-alpha solar viewing for a breakthrough price.

With the PST you will witness sudden eruptions in the solar atmosphere called flares and dramatic streamers known as prominences that shoot out from the Sun's edge. You'll see a solar disk mottled with granularity and dark, snaking filaments. Active regions containing migrating sunspots and bright, irregularly shaped plages add to the incredible detail.

This compact 40mm f/10 refractor houses a special filter called an etalon, which transmits only the primary wavelength of light emitted by hydrogen (656.3nm) in the solar chromosphere, where the action is. A bandpass of less than 1.0 Angstrom allows visibility of surface features and activity that get washed out in wider-bandpass "white light" solar filters. Internal blocking filters reject all unwanted and harmful radiation, for completely safe viewing.

The supplied 20mm (20x) Kellner telescope eyepiece (1.25") provides a full-disk view of the Sun through the permanent 90° diagonal prism. (Other 1.25" eyepieces can be used for additional magnification options.) A focusing knob keeps the image sharp and a tuning collar allows the contrast to be adjusted on selected surface details. A clever Sun-finder window near the eyepiece provides a safe way to aim the telescope.

The telescope is just 15" long and weighs only 3 lbs., so it needs only a small telescope mount or a sturdy camera tripod for support. A 1/4"-20 mounting socket under the scope's rear housing provides the attachment point. A custom, foam-lined carrying case is included.

The PST will show you how dynamic our nearest star really is, with some surface phenomena changing from one minute to the next! Get a Meade Coronado Personal Solar Telescope w/Case today and get in on the action.

I believe the guy having trouble needed some help with the scope. This is a great scope even without sunspots (like the sun has been for the last bit). When the sunspots come back, it gets even better. There is a focus knob and a adjustment knob on the scope itself. Tweaking the adjustment knob (the black band on the tube) shows different features on the sun. You can see prominences on the edge of the sun as well with this scope...it's great. The eyepiece that comes with it isn't too great, so be sure to get a few Plossl's to go with it. For the money, this is a great way to get into solar observing.

I really do not understand what all the great reviews are about. Views are nothing like what you see on the box or in all of the ads, unless you are taking astro photographs which of course this telescope is not suited to anyway. There is absolutly no eye relief. You have to be within 3mms of the eyepiece otherwise everything goes black. Yes you can see the sun, but to me it appeared as a dim orange circle about the apparent size of a pea with a few 2mm hairs along the edges. Nothing particularly interesting. You definitely need better eye pieces with this product rather than the one provided. I called Coronado tech support as I thought that the de-tuner was defective, but they confirmed that I was seeing just about all that the scope was capable of. To me a White light filter does just as well.

With this telescope, you can do what your mother told you never to do: stare at the sun! It's one thing to watch NOVA on television to see huge flames ripping off of the sun, but to actually see them with your own eye is something entirely different. The PST is the best truly- affordable way to see the things that relatively few have seen in their lifetime. These are the rare views. As we enter the uphill climb into Solar Cycle 24 the numbers of sunspots will begin to increase. Each month will begin to show increased solar activity that will be beautiful to watch through this little personal solar telescope. I recently photographed a solar prominence (one of those huge ripping flames) through this telescope and amazed even my astronomy buddies. This one is a lot of fun! Well....that is if you don't mind being out in the sun. --Andy Raiford

I purchased my Coronado PST from Orion in February and even though the Sun is still in a relatively quiet state at present, there is a lot of detail to observe including active flares and surface phenomena in the chromosphere only visible in H-Alpha light. The views are so amazing in fact, it is difficult to stop observing with this instrument. Flares appear and then disappear in sometimes only a matter of mintues. The 12mm Kellner eyepiece supplied with the scope gives very nice views but you can use your own eyepieces as well. I have used a range of eyepieces from a 25mm all the way down to a 7mm. All focus perfectly. I also have an electronic eyepiece I bought from Orion sometime ago and it also focuses well so that I can put the image on a TV screen for all to enjoy. Whether you like observing fine planetary details or observing the deep sky, seeing the Sun in H-Alpha is very enjoyable and entertaining experience.
