  • Big-aperture optics + point-and-view ease of use = out-of-this-world value

The Orion SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Telescope combines powerful optics with the ultimate in mechanical simplicity and stability. It features a precision 8" (203mm) parabolic primary mirror, center-marked at the factory for precise collimation and mounted in a cast-aluminum support cell that provides maximum ventilation. The mirror pulls in 73% more light than a 6", enough to tease out dust lanes in nebulas, resolve the cores of prominent globular clusters, and reveal subtle structure in elusive galaxies.

You're in total control as you point the telescope effortlessly to your target object anywhere in the sky. The 46"-long enameled steel tube glides on its sturdy Dobsonian telescope base. A gentle push or pull on the navigation knob puts you right in the observing pocket.

The CorrecTension spring system applies just the right amount of friction on the altitude bearings to ensure proper tube balance.

The SkyQuest XT8 Classic now features an upgraded 2" Crayford-style focuser that accepts both 1.25" and 2" accessories.

The XT8 comes with a host of great accessories. You get a Sirius Plossl 25mm telescope eyepiece (48x), an EZ Finder II reflex sight, an Orion quick-collimation cap, and a snap-on dust cover.

For the intrepid beginner to the veteran skygazer, the SkyQuest XT8 Classic Dobsonian Telescope lives up to its billing by Astronomy magazine as a "work of art." Get this masterpiece now at its new lower price! One-year limited warranty.

I shopped around before buying my second scope and decided on the XT8. I am new to the hobby, and until now, have only dabbled with a Meade "bargain" 70mm refractor. I carried the XT8 out tonight for the first time in horrid wind and cloud cover hoping to catch a break in the clouds to try it out. Oh, dear Lord! It was like my first taste of chocolate! I still can't believe what I've been missing! If more beginners were weaned on this scope, then, no one who tried the hobby would ever quit! At times, I was actually shooting THROUGH cloud cover! Take it from someone who agonized over deciding on a scope, and spent months doing my homework: If you are shopping around like I was, stop now. BUY THIS SCOPE. If you just want to get your feet wet, BUY THIS SCOPE. If you are on a budget, save your money, and... (you guessed it) BUY THIS SCOPE! You can't know if you like something until you get enough in your mouth to taste. BUY THIS SCOPE, AND OPEN WIDE!!!!!! Thanks so- much Orion. I am YOUR customer!

After many weeks of studying about getting started in astronomy, my wife and I gave each other the Orion XT-8 for our birthdays and early Christmas. We chose this style and model based on opinions on many websites about getting off to a good start. Everything helpful we read has been true for us. The XT-8 was easy to assemble. The collimation was easier than I expected - and just barely off center. Our first night features included Jupiter and it's four moons, plus amazing views of Earth's moon. In the 3 weeks since, we've had razor sharp views of the Orion Nebula, and found Andromeda Galaxy, almost directly overhead. With a little bit of amateur calibration, the finder scope is now dead-on target. Whatever I point it at will be centered in the 25 mm eyepiece. We're enjoying learning the constellations to find our way around, and are looking forward to many years of exploration with the XT-8.

I purchased the XT8 about a year ago. It was easy to assemble and the instruction manual included helpful tips on what to to view. It was bigger than I anticipated but nevertheless, easy to transport due to the optical tube and the base disassembling into two pieces. The 1.25" eyepiece included is very nice. However, I wish another eyepiece were included. The focuser operates smoothly with the abilty to hold 1.25" and 2" eyepieces. I live between two large cities and therfore the sky is moderately light poluted. It has performed better than I thought it would under my skies and has provided stunning views of the moon without a filter. I have also seen Orion Nebula, a slightly greenish Ring Nebula, Saturn's rings and some of its moons, two of Jupiters bands and 4 moons, and M45, ALL without a filter! I have not seen galaxies, but I doubt it is the telescope's fault. This is a great telescope and I willingly recommend it to anyone who wants a fairly portable, high quality, large optics telescope.

I'm not really qualified to rate the scope, as I'm a novice, however I am pleased with the apparent quality of the scope and base. I have used the scope three different nights since my purchase and am quite happy with the clarity of the views and the ease of use. Thanks, Pete

The Xt8 was a dream come true. My previous scope, a 6-inch reflector, had a short tube and an equatorial (non- motorized) mount and it was nearly impossible to view anything directly overhead. Also, images were less-than clear. Now, using the same lenses in the Xt8, I see crisp views and also, nebulas and Messier objects that I had never seen before. The Xt8 comes highly recommended and a great value. Tom Seymour

I have owned several other telescopes, both refractors and Newtonians, and have on occasion borrowed a Schmidt- Cassegrain. Aside from my initial 60mm refractor 20 years ago, this XT8 is the least expensive telescope I have owned, yet it is without a doubt my favorite! It's the perfect combination of light grasp, portability, and ease of use. High-quality optics, world-class smooth focuser, stable and smooth mount, all-important ability to use 2-inch eyepieces, and super value. The views are fantastic. Great job, Orion!! Enthusiastically recommended!! I should have gotten this one years ago.

I am very please with my purchase! Great view of moon, double stars, Jupiter and many others. BTW those views are just with eye piece that ships with the scope!! I just put in my order for 5mm and 13mm eye pieces to continue my planetary expedition. Great telescope...it's my first "real" scope!! LOVE IT Thanks ORION!

Good quality mid-size telescope for a reasonable price. I have had it for about 3.5 months and I must say it is a wonderful piece of equipment. As an amateur astronomer (age 13) I would recommend it to any one who wants a non-mobile telescope and has only used 5 inch or less scopes in the past. With only a 25 mm eyepiece (sirius plossl) I am able to make out the andromeda galaxy and upon close inspection reveals one of its dark dust lanes. For planetary observations I would recommend a 10mm or less (this will show detailed gas rings on Jupiter... but not quite enough detail on Mars). It has good, clear light transmission from its mirrors. I personally would let the telescope sit outside for about 20 min (to aclimate) before you are serious to start looking. This telescope brings out excellent detail of God's handiwork in star clusters (especially M13) and throughout the visible universe.

I did a lot of research when I was looking for a new telescope. Most sites I had read said to move up to a large sized reflector, so I did more research. Eventually i came along to the Orion XT8 Classic Dobsonian. This scope was shipped quickly, and safely. When it arrived it only took about 30-40 minutes to put together, it was easy but required some more tools than were provided. After putting it together i check the collimation, it was only a little bit off but with the collimation cap that was included, it was a sinch. I have yet to use the telescope due to the weather, but as you can read from the other reviews, this scope is a great buy and i highly recommend it as a first or second telescope.

First let me say i am an amateur at all this but i have owned two telescopes before this one, one i still have. Its a celestron nextstar 130 slt. Piece of junk, a toy compared to the xt8. What makes this thing so good, in my opinion, is the focal length. 1200mm. It blows doors on my 130slt with its puny 650mmfl. Top notch. I would suggest getting another eyepiece though. i got a Nagler 7mm. Awesome!!

Hello, I 've owned my xt8 since oct 2005,and I must say that the optical quality is the best I've owned save for an apo refractor. This has blown away both my c8 celestron and 9.25 celestron sct. You really achive perfect focus, save for difraction spikes on bright objects. I've since sold my sct's prefering to stay with the optics on this unit. I even bought tube rings to mount on my skyview pro mount. Now it works both as a Dob and with an e/q mount if I wish. Not to mention you save megabucks over buying a sct.

It took a few months before my schedule and the weather cooperated enough to be able to use the new telescope. I have never used one before but the instructions were very simple to follow. I set it up, lined up the sights, and my family and I were looking at Jupiter on our very first night. It was absolutely amazing. I realize it is about the easiest thing to find (other than the moon) but it was very satisfying nonetheless. We plan to spend as much time using this wonderful scope as we can.

For my husband's 51st birthday I decided to buy him a telescope. Not knowing anything about telescopes I went on line and did some research. It was recommended for beginner star gazers to purchase the SkyQuest XT8 telescope. I did so and we love it. The ordering was fast, and the shipment was fast. The telescope is much bigger than I anticipated but it's easy to move around. We started with the lens that it came with and haven't had much chance, due to weather, to look at the planets, just the moon. It does a good job when viewing the moon, but we decided we'd like a more high powered lens so we just ordered the Orion 10mm plossl eyepiece for better viewing. I would recommend this telescope to beginners. It is a great investment and when we get some viewing weather, I'm sure it will do the trick!

After some research, it was pretty easy to decide on the 8" Classic Dobsonian. Took me about an hour to set up out of the box, and was ready to use that night (if it wasn't for the rain). I've been using it regularly since, and I couldn't be happier. The 10mm Orion Sirius Plossl Eyepiece allowed me to see Jupiter like I've never seen it, and other great summer sights. While I haven't gotten a chance to use my 13% moon filter for the moon itself, it made viewing Jupiter's clouds a lot more pleasant. I strongly recommend this telescope for anyone just starting out. It's simple to use, and pretty easy to get outside (Although an adult would definitely be needed to help a child set it up). Worth every penny!

We are both amatuers, but are space enthusiast, and were greeted with a wonderful view of Jupiter and it's moons. It was marvelous. The clarity and ease of use was impeccable. We could actually see the storm bands, and this was inside the city limits. I can't wait to get it out away from the city lights. I would recommend this product to anyone. I decided to treat myself to a Dobby XT8 for my 50th birthday. I've wanted a telescope since I was little. When the big box arrived, I was scared to try to put it together. After two months of the box sitting in the dining room, I finally took the plunge. Then it took two weeks to get once decent night without storm clouds to try it out. When I finally got the half moon into view, I gasped out loud! The detail and clarity were utterly amazing and far exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to learn more about what to look for and how to line up what I want to view. I'm hooked! Why did I wait so long? Thanks and best regards, Linda T. York, PA

I am new to astronomy. The XT8 was highly recomended in multiple web sites I reviewed. It arrived intact and was VERY easy to set up. Within hours I was gazing at Saturn's moons with minimal difficulty. The scope is easy to use, easy to transport, and the enclosed sirius plossl eyepiece performs well. I look forward to using it for years to come. Thanks for making a great product.

I finally made the leap from bino's to a scope and after much research settled on the xt8. My order was promptly filled and sent out and arrived on the other side of the country in excellent condition (no need to adjust anything). Setup was a breeze and on the first night I was looking at Saturn's rings. This is an excellent setup for a beginner, not too small and not too large (easy to pull it out and set up). Keep up the good work.

My first telescope was a 60mm department store refractor. It was less than satisfiying, but it served as a brief stepping stone to the XT8. For over a month I read telescope reviews trying to make a decision. My expectations were exceeded with the XT8 I'm a novice, but the images from the XT8 are excellent. Out of the box collimation looked perfect. Moon views are razor sharp and extremely detailed with excellent contrast. Saturn and its moons are exciting to view. I've panned around the sky with much delight, even though at this point I'm not sure of what I'm viewing. Even somewhat disinterested family members were amazed by views of the moon and Saturn. I bought the 17 and 10mm Sirius eypieces in addtion to a 13% moon filter and the Shorty 2x Barlow. They really give me the flexibility I want to view various items. The unit is a bit large, but not unmanageable. Moving it around the yard in one piece is easy, but bringing it back into the house late at night is best done by dismounting it from the base, which is a cinch. The base movement is smoother than I had expected and is easy to point and track. People think I've spent thousands instead of hundreds of $ for this scope. The Starry Night software is a great aid for the novice. I don't know how deeply I will get into this hobby, but I'm totally satisfied with my purchase and with the ordering process.

I have always been fascinated by the sky and have had my fair share of department store scopes as a kid growing up. I now have my own children and wanted to introduce them to astronomy the right way. I received my XT8 and it was assembled and ready to go in about half an hour. That night I had the scope colminated and ready for my sons first stargaze. Needless to say I was impressed with the scope and I now have two boys hooked on learning the night sky. Scope was packaged very well, shipping was very prompt as was the ordering experience. The view from the XT8 was clear and precise. I will recommend Orion to anyone. I am looking at some new eyepieces and EQ mount now to start in to the realm of astrophotography

I was pretty hyped to get ahold of this telescope after reading all the excellent reviews but was a bit disappointed. I'm an amature but very interested in advanced observing and studying. The scope is actually a great bargin for the price and it captures pretty good images of both planets and some nebula however I thought it'd perform a bit better than it does with deep sky objects. I started on a Messier hunt only to get frustrated by not being able to really "see" most of them. It's a great scope for study of the lunar surface, you can make out the rings of Saturn fairly well and see some binary stars. Images are very clear and star clusters really come alive. I wish I wouldn've done a bit more research and gone with perhaps a Cass scope or even the 10 or 12 inch but for this price you really can't beat it.

I purchased the XT8 about a year ago and I am extremely glad that I did. I did research on what my first scope should be for about three months before I purchased the XT8. I have been extremely pleased with the ease of use on this scope. Not being a computerized Go-To, it allows me to learn my way around the sky. Deep sky object up to magnitude 10 are no problem with this scope with the included 25mm eyepiece. Collimation of the scope is very easy (only had to do it once just for practice). The only downside to this scope is the size of it. It is a little difficult toting it in and out of the house where I store it, but is well worth the hours of enjoyment that I have gotten out of it. Now I'm looking for a second scope from Orion that is a little more portable since I travel frequently. GREAT FIRST SCOPE!!!!!

I'm a college student in an Astonomy class. I've used refracting scopes before and I did a lot of research before choosing a dob, Orion, and the XT8. The service was excellent! The telescope shipped faster than expected and assembly took about 90 minutes. It's very sturdy and easy to use. I was surprised at how smooth the telescope moves while following the stars. The power and clarity are unbelievable. With additional 17mm and 10mm lenses, I was able to see everything I wanted on my first night, from the moon, to the Orion Nebula. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Reseached for quite a bit. Read books and scoured the Internet. Read the customer reviews on Amazon, etc. The ONLY negative I can say about this purchase is that it shipped from California and I live in New Jersey. So other than the long wait for it to get here, there really is NOTHING bad I can say about this telescope. This is my 1st telescope ever and I can say without a doubt I was utterly amazed and just slackjawed on the 1st night of looking with it. It swings around with ease, but not too much to be shaky. Was easy to align the mirrors which were a tad out of alignment from shipping. And it was even easier to align the spotting scope with the main mirror. Even with my light polluted skies, it was AMAZING. The scope is super easy to use and the views are crisp and clear. I even added a 3x barlow lens which makes look at Saturn simply breath taking. This weekend was my first real long outage with it out in the country. That was enough to convince me I am in for long haul with telescopes. Thanks Orion for a great and affordable product. (The price) certainly is not cheap, but I got my money's worth 1000% already!

It's easy to see why this has been described as possibly one of the best scopes for beginners and those with some telescope experience alike. I fall into that first category. As it comes with only a 25mm Plossl, I've already added the Shorty Barlow 2X and a 10mm Plossl to my collection. Also if you plan to travel with this scope at all, I heavily recommend the Padded Telescope Case #15174. Assembly was fairly easy, and removing the scope from the base is very simple. I did quite a bit of research about getting the best scope for my money before I chose this one, and I'm very happy with my choice!

This is my very first scope and I am very glad to have picked the XT8. The scope is very well made as well as the base. It is perfect for my new hobby. I put it together in about 1 to 1.5 hours and used it that night to view the orion nebula. The scope is big and kinda awkward to move but that was to be expected. It is by no means too big and I wouldn't hesitate to use it everynight if given the chance. I will probably pick up the recommended Orion XT8 padded case for when I travel. Shipping cost was more than expected but the scope + shipping was still cheaper than other competitors. Received the scope with all parts and no damage. From now on I will only buy ORION scopes and accessories.

I spent a significant amount of time researching and learning about telescopes before I purchased the XT8. I have used it several times and have had much pleasure in viewing Venus, Saturn, the moon, and a few nebula. The image quality is great, however, it does have the classic drawbacks that any reflector does. The most noticable that I have experience so far is slight image distorion due to air currents within the OTA. This is minor and easy to fix however, and is not significant by any standard. The Dobsonian mount and base is excellent and very sturdy. I have used an equatorial mount and it can be a pain to say the least. The mount with the XT8 is far superior. It can be a hassle to transport at times, but is worth it for the sole fact that it will not shake if on stable ground. All in all, it is a great product and I am very pleased with the purchase. You won't regret it either.

Fantastic! Easy to use- and you can even take photos through the 1.25" lens. Views of the moon are sharp and clear- got a great look at Venus as well. My 11 year old son was able to use it and was very excited. His experience with smaller refracting telescopes was frustrating- hard to find stars, hard to even see through the lens. For kids, the a larger reflecting telescope is the way to go!

I've had this scope for almost a yr now and it was just recently that I did some serious sky watching with this scope. On a good night my skies are about mag 5 directly over head. Pointing at M42 with the supplied 25mm ep the nebula takes on its greenish tone with its feathery wisps of gas expanding beyond the ep. The trapezium resolved into 4 distinct stars with its companion stars. Over to Beta Monocerotis, the triple star, I was able to make out the quadruple at higher power. The clown face nebula was a bit of a challenge, but once found it appears to be like an out of focus star. High power reveals it's central star with a halo of gas around it. After midnight I observed saturn in the boiling horizon . Rings are visible, but edge on and not much detail. Horrible seeing conditions that evening. A few months back I easly saw Jupiter's GRS and wealth detail within it's cloud belts among it's moons. I'm going to start using this scope every chance I get. I never realized how much I can actually see through this eight inch. portable and light for it's size. Could fit in the back of most compact cars. Highly recommended.

I've always looked up toward the stars and always wanted to see more. Due to light pollution I wasn't able to..until I ordered the XT8. The scope is very easy to assemble and move around. I was able to see so many stars and the moon was beautiful.I only have one eyepiece and right after seeing how many stars I could see at night I want to see more. So I will definitely be buying from Orion again in the future. Great product and customer service.

I received my Orion XT8 last week. It was well packaged and the next day received the base. Assembly was very easy and collomating the mirror was even easier than I thought. I also liked the viewfinder which was very easy to use. I took it outside of my apartment which has two bright parking lights and I was impressed with the views of Jupiter, M2 and the Andromedia galaxy. I'm planning on purchasing the 2" Orion DeepView eyepiece soon to view my favorite nebula in Orion. I just can't wait to see even more at my friends house that dosen't have as much light pollution. After my first night of testing the scope it has been cloudy and raining off and on for a week now. Maybe I'll get a break next week. Thanks for making such a fine product.

I bought this telescope a little over a month ago due to living in a big city and weather conditions I was not really able to use it for an extended period of time until this weekend. First thing I will say about this telescope it is big and somewhat awkward to carry. If you need/want to travel to use this telescope you will definitely need the padded carrying case. That is its only draw back though. When I finally got under some dark skies to see what this telescope could do I was amazed. I managed to get a good look at Jupiter before it sank below the horizon, got a good view of M42, and the views of the moon were absolutely breathtaking. There is nothing better than that "Oh Wow" feeling when you find something cool to look at. I am very pleased with this telescope. It met my expectations and exceeded them in every way. I look forward to many years of discovering what is hidden in the night sky with my XT8.

I purchased this scope this past spring and am very pleased with it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to observe a lot (I work nights) but when I did break her out I couldn't be more pleased. Mine was purchased (new) through a local store and although the box for the tube was slightly damaged it was in perfect shape. The main mirror was a hair out of collimation but was easy to restore (I applaud the center "target" circle on the mirror which made alignment a breeze)... One Must agree that for (the price) to get 8 inches of aperture is an incredible bargain considering an 8 inch SCT goes for over a Grand . Now I am considering upgrading to an XT10 Intelliscope. Good job, Orion!

I got my XT8 as an upgrade in my experience and it was the best decision I ever made. On my first night out with my new partner I saw many clusters, Jupiter, the moon and some very nice double stars. I'm working on getting an EP so I can see some galaxies. The price tag is awsome and I am so happy with it.

I did a lot of online researched before buying a telescope in July, 2008, and my wife and I are very happy with our choice of the Orion XT8. We are total beginners, so it was important that the telescope be easy to get started on, and it was. With the eyepieces that were included at the time--25mm and 10mm Plossls--we were able to look at Jupiter and its moons, our own Moon (incredible views!) as well as Andromeda Galaxy and some amazing star clusters, double stars, and a couple nebulas, all from our front deck with city light pollution. Getting out of town to enjoy dark skies is really incredible. We bought the optional case for the tube and we're glad we did, otherwise this would not be as portable a scope and might be damaged with regular use and transporting. I highly recommend getting a moon filter. I bought an inexpensive one and it really saves on the eyes and lets us enjoy the Moon much more, even during full moons. I have also purchased Highlight Plossls in 17mm and 32mm and they are excellent. The Expanse 9mm is nice for closer views during good seeing nights. The only useless purchase was the solar filter, which I returned. It produces a boring white paper plate image of the sun. I especially enjoy finding deep sky objects using star charts or just wandering the sky randomly. The view of star clusters through the XT8 is simply awesome. I enjoy the included Starry Night's software very much. I use that almost every day. This scope promises to provide us with many years of enjoyment. We take very good care of it. It feels like a real treasure, though it was not terribly expensive at all. Thanks for your excellent products and customer service.

Thank you Orion! My XT8 is one outstanding telescope. I have access to an Obsession 25" and a 12" via my local astronomy club. So, my standards are high. Though it is only 8" this scope gives great views, is easy to set up, and easy to use. The LaserMate Delux Collimator is also a must. I end up lending it to everyone at star parties. Great job Orion. John Dobson would be proud except I didn't build it myself. Regards, Todd Nelson Monroe, Connecticut
