Orion StarMax 127mm Equatorial Mak-Cass Telescope

Yes, the craters of the moon look
impressive, but I can't see Jupiter only
a little dot which I know is Jupiter,
but not very impressive since I can even
focus. Maybe I expect too much, but I
don't think so. I bought a 9mm planetary
eyepiece, but it doesn't seem to make
much of an improvement. I need to find
out if the shipping might have been an
issue since it was banged around quite a
bit, but there is no visible signs of
damage.

A bit over a year ago I decided to get
back into amateur astronomy after a
45-year hiatus. Given the flood of
webcams and other affordable imagers, I
wanted to try lunar astrophotography. My
decision to start with the StarMax 127mm
was based on solid reviews, compact
size, relatively long focal length,
great price, and a one-stop purchase
that would handle the telescope, tripod,
mount, and a few of the other basics
that would get me started. I have never,
for a moment, second-guessed that decision!
The telescope is extremely well-built,
as is the mount and tripod. The optics
are excellent, there is no spurious
color anywhere, and the focus is solid
with no trace if image-shift. The
telescope has done an excellent job as a
lunar imager and, quite surprising to
me, as I got experience and upgraded my
photography "stuff", it does a very
creditable job on the planets! I have
upgraded lots of bits and pieces to make
my photography easier and more
consistent, but the StarMax 127mm still
sits at the center of my system. This is
a fine instrument that is worth
significantly more than you will spend.

I own one, the scope is great. Too bad I
did not buy it, when the OTA was
equipped with a dovetail bar.
I am glad you made the change.

The best telescope is the one that gets
used, and this
is a telescope that I will use often
because it is so
quick and easy to set up. It appears to
be very well
made, with excellent optics (star test
looked great).
Jupiter was impressive even when very
low in the
sky. The only minuses: an inadequate
finder scope
(which I have already upgraded), and
some rather
confusing directions (which I really
didn't need). I
also recommend the optional EQ-3M
Single-Axis
Electronic Drive. Overall rating: 4.5
stars (which I
rounded up to 5).

I purchased the StarMax 127 EQ as my
main planetary scope. So far the results
have been quite stellar. Saturn at 171x
is a nice view this scope easily splits
the Trapezium in the Orion Nebula.
All-in-all this is a very nice scope on
a good solid mount. The only drawback to
the scope is I wish it had a 2" back end
for my other accessories. A dew shield
and an additional eyepiece would have
been nice. You get one 25mm that yields
61X. Nearly every other scope in the
catalog has two eyepieces. A better
finder scope would have been a nice
addition as well. I would recommend this
scope to others...

As delivered this is a 4 star telescope,
however with some additions it easily
becomes 5 stars. First the good:
Mechanically, it's top notch, no image
shift whatsoever, built like a tank,
and very good optically. The finder
is OK but a literal pain in the neck.
The diagonal it comes with should be
upgraded to do justice to the optics.
The tripod is a tad shaky. Also, a MUST
HAVE accessory is the passive dew shield
which seems to do an adequate job as
both a stray light blocker and dew shield.
In order to upgrade, I replaced the finder
The first thing I did was to replace the
stock 6x30 pain in the neck straight
through finder with a Rigel Quick Finder
and an Orion 9x50 Right Angle Correct
Image Finder. (This last might have been
a little overkill but I happened to have
one lying around.) I suspect a 6x30
RACI Finder would be adequate for this
telescope. I then put a combination of
foam and wood in the tripod legs to try
to stiffen them to reduce vibrations.
I also replaced the (diagonal) with an
Orion 8879 Enhanced mirror diagonal
and added an RA drive motor.
Tonight was a great night with excellent
seeing Saturn at 220X through a 7mm
Nagler was magnificent, and there was
absolutely no vibration while tracking
with the drive motor.
Do I recommend this as a first
telescope? No, I would recommend an 8
or 10 inch Dobsonian instead. However I
highly recommend this as a second
telescope for a person looking for a
portable setup good for bright deep-sky
and solar system viewing.

I did lot of research for purchasing my
first scope. Main criteria was, light
weight
and good and most important not very
expensive. Everyone I asked agreed
about Orion 127 APEX.But since I need
mount/tripod I got STARMAX127 which
was on sale. Oversized shipment killed
me... Scoped arrived in good
condition.Thanks god shipping folks
didn't re-collimate it. Assembly
Instructions was bit confusing.
Remember I had never seen a scope in
person or touched one in my entire life.
So took a while to assemble it and was
able to fix. tried on distant church
first. Had to wait for 3 nights to actually
present it to divine heavenly stars. Plossl
25mm that came along with scope is
good. Since then i added a barlow and two
eps to my collection. There were few
dust particle inside the scope. I guess
that could happen during assembly of
the scope optics. Any way it does not
hinder anything.
Overall, I am very happy with Orion and
their product. I would definitely
recommend that to anyone who wants to
starter telescope like me or to others who
want to have portable scope. There are
other forums online who have praised
STARMAX127/APEX127.

I purchased this telescope last year.
This makes the second Orion telescopes
I have bought. They are both excellent
scopes. The 127 starmax is quite a
scope. I added the dual axis motor
drives to the 127 starmax. I have taken,
to me, excellent pictures of the moon
and orions nebula, NGC 869. The drives
work perfect with the scope, after polar
alignment. I can take pictures for up to 1
to 2 hrs. The objects stay centered for a
couple of hours. I purchased a 9x50
finderscope for it too, which helps a
great deal in centering the objects in the
crosshairs of the finder. When I do this
it's centered in the eyepieces. Then all I
have to do is pop my camera in the
eyepiece holder, and Iam ready to take
pictures. I don't even take the camera
out of the holder, I just use my
finderscope. Orion has excellent optics
and mounts for astrophotography, which
is a plus+++. Also excellent customer
support.
GREAT WORK ORION!!!!!!!!!!!!
ORION IS MY NUMBER 1 CHOICE!!!!!!

Really great telescope. Well made and
great value for the price. Very clear,
precise images. High quality instrument.
