In terms of what you can see, bigger telescopes are better. But bigger telescopes also require bulkier, heavier mounts to keep them stable, and consequently, an equally brawny owner to lug it around—not to mention more storage space.

Enter the Orion Apex 127mm Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope. It boasts big 127mm (5")-diameter optics but in a tube that's a fraction of the length (just 15" long!) and weight (8.6 lbs.) of a Newtonian reflector or refractor of similar aperture and focal length. That's the beauty of its Maksutov-Cassegrain optical design—it's so wonderfully portable.

And it's those same high-performance optics that give the Orion Apex 127mm Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope such outstanding image quality and such an incredible range of uses for the demanding observer. It gulps in 55% more light through its multi-coated, 5" meniscus lens than that of a 4" telescope, putting it in the big leagues for astronomical observation and advanced nature study. And its long 1540mm (f/12.1) focal length provides 62x magnification with the included 25mm Sirius Plossl telescope eyepiece (1.25"), and lets you push the power up to 250x with optional eyepieces! Bright views of star clusters and nebulas at low power, stunning lunar and planetary detail at higher power—it's all in a night's work for the Apex 127mm.

And as a daytime spotting scope, no telescope is more capable, especially in low-light conditions. It couples quickly to any sturdy equatorial mount or photo-style tripod (we recommend our Paragon-Plus XHD tripod, #5360) thanks to a built-in 1/4"-20 adapter plate. Mounting and disassembly are a snap.

Quality is evident not only in the optics, but also in the black-anodized aluminum front and rear castings, the smooth-turning focus knob, and the extruded aluminum tube, with a classy, metallic-burgundy finish. The 6x26 achromatic, correct-image finder scope features a quick-release aluminum bracket with a dovetail base and two-screw X-Y alignment. The 25mm Sirius Plossl telescope eyepiece slips into a 45° correct-image prism diagonal, also included. You might also be interested to know that the T-threads on the eyepiece adapter allow attachment of a 35mm camera body (with optional T-ring) to the telescope for telephoto photography.

And if all that weren't enough, we include a fully padded, nylon/polyester carrying case, which has plenty of room for additional accessories in the zippered side pockets.

Unencumbered with complicated gadgetry like you find on competing models, the Orion Apex 127mm Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope offers hassle-free, big-aperture performance and convenient portability, at a price that's too good to pass up! One-year limited warranty.

I own and use 9 scopes, from an 80mm ED refractor to a 10" SCT (yeah, I'm a scope junkie). The 127 Mak is a perfect fit in my stable. Combined with a Vixen Porta Mount, I am observing instead of setting up in about 5 minutes. The optical performance of this instrument is equal to scopes I have paid a couple of thousand for. Get one! You will love it.

So far since purchasing my new Orion Apex 127mm Mak I have only had it out under the stars one night. My first night out with the new 127mm Mak proved to be a most pleasurable night of viewing. I have been a Refractor guy since taking up the hobby of amateur astronomy so my past experience with this style of optical tube was somewhat limited. After 2 hours of viewing that evening I was pleasantly surprised with the Maks performance, especially for its size. I was able to view most of the Messier objects that I could usually see with my Orion 100mm f/6 Refractor and the images were color free and very sharp when properly focused. The focus control seemed to work extremely well with little, if any, noticeable backlash in the focusing control. Most of my viewing was done using a 24mm Baader Hyperion eyepiece and a Orion 90 degree premium diagonal. The moon revealed incredible detail with a 13mm eyepiece. This is a great optical tube assembly and the package included a really nice padded soft carrying bag, a finder scope and also a 45-degree diagonal that would be better suited for just daytime spotting. The only thing I noticed about the Apex was that it took much longer than I was normally accustomed too for the optics to completely cool down for tack sharp viewing. This is due to the additional time required for the cooling of the thicker front lens used on Maks. That's something that I just have to get use to. This is a very nice scope in a small package that will give most 6" SCTs a run for their money. Donnie Garrett / Muncie, IN

This is my first telescope and I love it. I am a very beginning amateur astronomer, and use this scope to look at celestial bodies, when I get a chance to. It is great for focusing on a cluster of small stars, as well as well as looking at the moon. Although for the latter, I suggest a more powerful eyepiece. This telescope is a very good, light weight telescope, and has served me well, no matter what the conditions of the sky.

I've had mine for about a year. I have and have used bigger scopes, but none better than this. My best planetary views have all been through this scope, not a bigger dob, not a bigger SCT. Because it's portable, I was able to get it to a dark sight and also had my best view of Andromeda through this scope. It's a keeper. I do recommend a good finder. I use the Orion 9X50 RACI and a Rigel both.

I've had my apex 127 for over three years now.Since day one,I've never been disppointed with this scopes performance.Though it performs well under the stars I bought mine to use for nature photgraphy.Doing so has taken me through many miles of the toughest Florida scrub. The scope looks terrible, countless scratches and nicks deep into the finish.Three times I have dropped this scope onto concrete! Twice from my shoulder and once from my waist.Despite trashing two diagonals, and one 40mm plossl, the scope still delivers razor sharp images.I have not had to recollimate.I know without question that my Meade 125 etx would not survive a single fall, let alone three. The robust construction of the apex is as good as it gets for the money. When the time comes to replace this scope (six or seven falls?) only another apex 127 will do for me.You can view many of the photos taken with this scope on either astromart or birdforum, both under my name,Michael Downs.

I bought this scope a couple of years ago, mainly for birding. Nothing in life is perfect, but this is a fine scope for the price. More cumbersome than a smaller refractor, but more light and more options. A good 30-40mm eyepiece is a must, but higher powers are nice to have, too. Okay, but not great, for terrestial photos, and fine for casual astronomy. Does a lot of things pretty well. I'm not a bit disappointed.

I live in my motorhome, so I was looking for a scope that didn't take up much room, and I can use for both sky and land. It is excellent for both applications. I also put it in my back pack and hike into the mountains behind my house. Enjoy it very much, thank you Kevin G

Great telescope for both astronomical use and terrestrial use. The compact size and light weight makes the scope very convenient to transport. The optical tube carrying case securely protects the scope. Set up only takes a couple of minutes. The image through the scope is clear and sharp. Purchase several quality eyepieces and a quality tripod and you'll be set for years of use. I would suggest purchasing an Orion EZ Finder Reflex sight to replace the finder scope for astronomical viewing.
