Few things can quell the enthusiasm of beginning and intermediate astronomers more than a telescope that's too big to easily handle. If it takes too much work to move it, set it up, and take it down, actual viewing time will be cut to a minimum.

Our Orion StarMax 102mm Equatorial Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope puts viewing first, allowing plenty of time for family and friends to enjoy the wonders of the night sky. It's the perfect ready-when-you-are telescope. Transporting it is a breeze. Set-up and break-down takes just minutes. Viewing time is measured by a chorus of "ohhhs" and "ahhhs" that extend for hours as star clusters practically burst from the telescope eyepiece and the rugged relief of Moon craters blazes in crisp, sharp clarity.

This excellent all-around performer is as notable for the quality of its Maksutov-Cassegrain optics as it is for ease of use and compact portability. Its 102mm, fully multi-coated front lens pulls in 28% more light than its 90mm counterparts, to capture fainter objects and resolve subtler detail. And with a 1300mm focal length (f/12.7) it has the same magnification range (up to 200x) as longer, bulkier refractor and reflector telescopes. In a tube less than 12" long!

Quality over Gadgetry
Like the smaller StarMax 90, the Orion StarMax 102mm Equatorial Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope is equipped for years and miles of use. It shuns plastic parts that are so ubiquitous on gadgety mass-market telescopes in favor of a quality aluminum tube with solid aluminum front and rear castings, rubber-grip metal focus knob, and a built-in aluminum 1/4"-20 mounting block. Even the included accessories are top-of-the-line: a 25mm (52x) Sirius Plossl fully-coated telescope eyepiece (1.25"), a 90° mirror star diagonal, and a 6x26 correct-image finder telescope equipped with an aluminum dovetail bracket with intuitive X-Y alignment control. You won't pay extra for a carrying case, either. It's included! Fully padded, with zippered accessory pockets, and with handles that fit in the hand or over the shoulder.

The Orion StarMax 102mm Equatorial Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope comes complete with a sturdy German-type EQ-2 equatorial mount with dual setting circles and slow-motion hand controls. An optional AstroTrack or EQ-2M electronic drive can be added for automatic tracking. The aluminum tripod adjusts for the height of all users, from short to tall.

Astrophotographers will like the addition of T-threads on the telescope eyepiece adapter, enabling direct attachment of a 35mm camera body (with optional T-ring) for short-exposure shoots. The same feature allows the telescope to become a precision telephoto lens for terrestrial photography. With this versatility, many avid big-telescope owners will find the Orion StarMax 102mm Equatorial Maksutov-Cassegrain Telesoce to be an excellent second scope for everyday use.

All in all, the Orion StarMax 102mm Equatorial Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope is an easy and inexpensive way to open the sky for all to see. One-year limited warranty.

i'm totally impressed with this setup.... i also purchased the motor drives for it, and now i just P/A and go from there....true, it's not like my 10" NGT, however it sure is fun to work with... great portability and quick setups.... thank you, orion.....

This scope makes a great grab and go instrument. Optics are very nice and well aligned right out of the box. The only thing I would improve on is a larger finder scope (the supplied 6 by 26 is not sufficient) and a lighted reticle would be even better. Using this scope with one of the iOptron G Cubes makes it hard to center any faint objects in the eyepiece because one cannot find them in the finder once the Go To mount locks on to the target. Also, why only one eyepiece with this scope. Come on, Orion, the inexpensive Plossls you provide can't be expensive to manufacture!

Extremely pleased best put! I have Orion's 90mm as well as their 127mm StarMax scopes. These are some of the finest I've ever used giving views that rival some of the most expensive scopes money can buy - won't name names but think of the best APOs and these are right there in contrast, true color rendition, freedom from abberations and perform way beyond their cost and aperture! I would write a review on each, however the 102mm comes to mind as I just purchased my latest one last week!!

I recently got this scope in pristine condition used. I was impressed immediately. It is not a toy, with a sturdy mount, and nice optics. My first view of the moon last night was nice, but too bright for best viewing. This scope seems to be a winner and I will update at some future time.

The starmax 102mm has been a great all around starter scope, it breaks down and sets up quick and easy and you are star gazing. wish I would have purchased one with a little more aperture though to see a little further beyond.but that can come later when I can talk wife in to the importance of an upgrade to a level 2 scope. this scope has been hours of fun though! and a good solid telescope.

For years I used department store telescopes. Then I revieved my first orion star max 102 eq. and Now I Know where telescopes come from. The starmax is a quailty insturment one can use almost right out of the box. all of my friends and family were amazed at the differance in the scopes. The orion Star Max Wins hands down. And when we contaced orion support, they got back to us with more than enough information to aid in upgrading our new scope. Without a doubt our next scope will come from orion telescopes! ORION IS WHERE TELESCOPES COME FROM!

I recenty purchased the 102 Mak after checking out practically everything in its price range. It has delivered everything promised. I was at first reluctant to get an EQ mount, thinking that it would be hard to figure out. It is very easy to use and very quick to set up and take down. The first night out I set it to the brightest "star" in the sky, only to be blown away with view of Saturn, rings and all looking back at me. It only comes with one eye piece so I would reccomend getting at least one more. If you think you need a computer controlled scope to get around, think again, and check this one out.

My StarMax 102mm EQ Compact Mak is my first telescope and I'm having an absolute BALL with it! I'm fortunate enough to be stationed near the Equator, have dark skies, and both Hemisphere's Constellations viewable, so my Mak is really getting a work-out! Thanks so much for such an awesome starter- scope!
