Maybe the idea of a big-aperture telescope appeals to you, but the portability issue has kept you on the fence. Well you can hop off it now because we've got the perfect solution — the "space-saving" Orion SkyQuest XX12 IntelliScope® Truss Tube Dobsonian. It's a deep-sky observer's dream telescope, offering jumbo 12" (305mm) Pyrex parabolic optics of 1500mm focal length (f/4.9); a stylish, reduced-weight base outfitted with computerized IntelliScope object locating technology; and a sturdy, eight-truss tube design that disassembles in about a minute into compact, easily portable components. And at its price, the XX12 ranks as the #1 killer telescope deal of the year!

Finally, a deluxe, large-aperture Dobsonian that fits comfortably into a compact car for transport to your favorite observing site! Credit the XX12's traditional truss tube design, which utilizes eight aluminum trusses (four captive pairs) that attach and detach quickly with oversized hand knobs — no tools required! This design provides a more rigid structural support than other designs in this category. And all assembly knobs are captive, so you won't lose any in the dark! (You're welcome.) When removed, the trusses in each captive pair align in parallel, which saves space when transporting and storing them. Disassembly of the 56"-long optical tube yields two sections, the largest measuring just 26" in length.

The XX12 improves on the already stellar features and performance of our standard XT12 IntelliScope Dobsonian. The focuser is a dual-speed (11:1) 2" Crayford with 1.25" adapter, metal focus knobs, and adjustable drawtube tension to ensure excellent, non-slip motion for any size of eyepiece used. We outfitted the XX12 with larger, 8" altitude bearings for smoother tube motion. The side-reinforced base sports stylish cutouts that minimize weight without sacrificing stability. EbonyStar laminate glides on virgin Teflon to give the azimuth motion the feel of silk. Fine features carried over from the XT12 include adjustable altitude tension, an open 9-point flotation primary mirror cell, and a "navigation knob" for easy slewing.

Although the primary mirror cell is extremely well ventilated, the Orion SkyQuest XX12 Intelliscope Truss Dobsonian comes with a Cooling Accelerator Fan, which attaches to the back of the cell and facilitates faster equilibration of the mirror to ambient temperature. The secondary mirror has a 70mm minor axis and is held in a four-vane spider with very thin (0.7mm thick) vanes to minimize diffraction effects.

The acclaimed IntelliScope Computerized Object Locator comes standard on the XX12, allowing manual slewing to any of 14,000 celestial objects in just seconds, using its illuminated pushbutton keypad. It lets you spend your time viewing celestial objects instead of hunting for them. What's more, with the XX12's Truss Dobsonian 305mm of light-grabbing aperture, your favorite "faint fuzzies" won't look nearly so faint or fuzzy! The deep-sky views will simply dazzle you.

The XX12 Truss comes fully loaded with great accessories, including a 9x50 finder scope, aluminum telescope eyepiece rack, two telescope eyepieces: a low-power 35mm (43x) DeepView 2" and a high-power 10mm (150x) Sirius Plossl 1.25", dust caps for the top and bottom optical tube sections, and a "collimating cap" to insure optical alignment of the mirrors. A convenient carrying handle is provided for the base.

It's the big Dobsonian you've dreamed of owning, and now you can take it with you wherever dark skies beckon! Get the practical and amazingly affordable Orion SkyQuest XX12 IntelliScope Truss Tube Dobsonian by Orion and hit the road to astronomical adventure.

The scope arrived very quickly, and extremely well protected in three boxes. After opening (and unpacking) them, I turned the largest of them over and used it as a "workbench" for constructing the telescope. That arrangement worked out very well. Also, I left all the small parts in their respective bags. This was a big help I think. My advice (for assembly) is to just take your time and read the instructions very carefully. While they might seem a little confusing (and technical) with a "quick scan", they are well written. Just reference the photos and diagrams, and it should come together very well (as it did for me). With a focus on precision building, I got everything right on the first try. It took about three hours, and properly installing the encoders was the hardest part. The truss design really paid off when moving the scope outside. It was surprisingly easy to move and set up (considering the size). Under the night sky, the first deep-sky object I chose was the double cluster. I was delighted with the view, and my wife's first comment was about how "clear" it was. The stars were lovely "pinpoints", and the other objects I viewed proved to be just as stunning. I tested the Intelliscope Object Locater on the second night. My first alignment was very good, and the system placed all chosen objects well within the field of the 2" eyepiece. As for negative points, I really can't think of any. This scope is sheer joy. It is, to my recollection, the best I have owned.

Let me start by saying I am entirely new to astronomy, though I have used a few scopes in my life and listened to their owners try to explain their operation, as well as how to figure out what you are looking at, rarely getting past a quick look and a "neat". I spent the better part of the last year reading various magazines trying to determine the best first scope to get. Astrophotograpy sounded great, but as a beginner I feared I would get bored waiting for results, and typically even entry level quality is a lot more of an investment and I didn't want to spend 5,000 on something that would wind up sitting in the basement. Orion intrigued me from the start, (the company in general) as most of their products seemed comparable in quality for a lot less money then many others. I initially was going to wait until the XX14i came out, but got anxious and canceled my XX14i order and reordered the XX12i. The staff was awesome, in a matter of minutes my order was changed and in a day on its way, with free shipping. When the scope arrived, I immediately began assembling it carefully reading the instructions and laying out the parts beforehand. It took me maybe an hour and a half going slow. I waited until dark and lugged it outside for some on the fly viewing, forgoing using the object locator simply because I was too excited. In less then 5 minutes i was peering through the included wide eyepiece looking at the moons of Jupiter, I could even see the stripes of the planet. The following night I lugged it out again, determined to use the object locator. After reading the instructions, and locating a few stars using the charts in the book, I tested it on Jupiter. It was within the range of the scopes view, not 100% centered, but that I'm sure was because I'm an impatient novice. I then swung it around and used it to find the Andromeda galaxy within seconds. At that moment I was 100% satisfied with this scope. I would recommend this to anyone that wants as much aperture as you can get for under 2000 as a first scope. Its not so scary to let the kids have a go at it either, for the price and durability of its design. Its also highly portable for a Dobsonain, I purchased the case and shroud combo package and I would say its a must for keeping light and dust out. When I finally do graduate to something better for Astrophotograpy, It will be an Orion, this scope will always travel with us as well, just to entertain while we wait for pictures. Now all I need to do is figure out how to select some eyepieces and filters. Sine its arrival the moon hasn't been around, that I am sure will be another awe inspiring night.

After owning an 8" SCT go-to scope for 8 years I decided it was time for a big dob, and am I glad I chose the XX12i. I wanted a dob I could break down for storage and to transport to dark sky locations and the XX12i provides everything I expected. Assembly instructions are very clear and well-written and the scope went together without any problems. The overall construction and fit and finish is first rate. It's first light was at a dark- sky star party, and several experienced observers including a 15" Obsession owner commented on what a nice scope it is. I'm very pleased with the my XX12i, and as always it was a pleasure to deal with Orion.

I have been waiting my whole life for a real telescope. This one is. I'll start with the cons. It is big, difficult to move, especially by oneself, but it does come apart easily and the parts are not too bad to move. It does take some time to set up, so you can't very well just go out for a quick look at something. The kit arrived without some key washers. The tech support sent me replacements, but I used some adhesive pads in the meantime which have worked out fine. Pros: big and sturdy. Instructions better than most. Finished assembly in a few hours. The intelligent star finder apparatus is awesome, I found the ring nebula on my first try. Now, if the weather would cooperate!

The Orion SkyQuest XX12 had exceeded my expectations. Aside from the expected differences moving from a 4.5" scope to a 12", the superb quality of image was what impressed me the most. After assembly (and the instructions were perfect), the first observing opportunity I had was during the day. Using the optional solar filter, I was able to observe the sun (still waiting for some sun spot activity) with a minimal amount of effort and set-up time. After setting up for my first night time observations, the ease of alignment made finding my targets, using the Intelliscope hand set, impressively easy. Select the planet, star or galaxy, follow the pointing directions and the object was in the eyepiece field of view (I started by using the supplied 35mm eyepiece). Moving to 20mm and then the 10mm eyepieces required minimum adjustment to center the object. Finding the right tension balance took very little time and I was impressed with the smooth ease of movement. Oh, and yes, the image quality was excellent!! From the XX12 arriving on-time, to the spot-on assembly instructions, to its portability and ease of use, this has been a great experience. I am looking forward to many years of using and sharing this outstanding telescope.

I was coming back to amateur astronomy after an absence of almost ten years of not owning a 'real' telescope when I saw this scope on Orion's website. Looked really interesting - and a tremendous value. Checked it out on the web and others gave it high marks. Got the chance to put my hands on one (during the day - no observing) and I knew this was the scope to get. A week later it arrives. First impressions are always important and I was impressed with the great job of packaging and the assembly instructions. (Suggestion to others - don't take all of the fastners out of the bags until needed! And before you assemble, go through and identify everything. Makes the process really easy.) Assembly took less than 2 hours. Collimation was straight forward using the Orion collimating eyepiece that I bought with the scope. (And it seems to hold collimation very well.) Mechanically and optically I think the scope is great. The views from my heavily light polluted back yard have exceeded my expectations. And if the weather cooperates I am sure I will have some really great dark sky experiences too. The cases and shroud seem well made and work great too! Nothing is perfect however. I'm a tall guy and found the straight through finder to be a literal pain in the neck, so I replaced it with a right-angle. (Important if you like to star hop like me, probably not as important if you plan on finding everything with the Intelliscope Object Locator.) After my first night of observing I ordered the holster for the Intelliscope Object locator because I didn't care for the idea of using velcro. And Orion's customer service was great in handling the mis-shipment of my shroud with my original order. Overall, highly recommended!

Very good workmanship and great optics. Solid construction. Some difficulty in mounting encoders as instructions not clear. Locating proper washers/spacers for encoders difficult as parts in different bags. Clearly marking encoder hardware would be helpful. Also including a red-dot finder would make rapid alignment of intelliscope easier. Overall very pleased with value. Thank you.

This is our grab and go scope. I bought the XX12 as an upgrade to my wife's 10" Lightbridge. I liked the truss dob setup, aperture and encoder capability. I also ordered the shroud and cases. The assembly takes a couple of hours with hand tools. The trickiest part is tweaking the encoder in the azimuth base to get it right. The first couple nights we had errors of about 10 degrees. There are some diagnostics you can run on the encoders and I took the base apart and tweaked the encoder. After that, all push-to's were in the FOV of a 13mm Ethos or just outside of it. The scope needs to have a vertical stop set up and it's worth taking the extra time to get that as accurate as possible. The image brightness and quality compares more with my C14 than it does to the 10" Lightbridge which has had several optical upgrades. For a grab and go, this thing is outstanding. My wife is 5'4" and can easily set the entire scope up herself and see the eyepiece without needing a step stool at the zenith. The whole scope sets up very quickly and can fit in her Jag. The soft cases are well made. Even the mirror box case has offset handles for balance when carrying it. The basic scope needs no necessary upgrades other than the shroud. The focuser is two speed, smooth and remains centered through full travel. The 50mm finder is a nice touch but unnecessary once the encoders are aligned. About the only upgrade I could recommend is knobs for the secondary adjustment. The primary comes with knobs so no upgrade there is necessary. The push-to display is easy to use, the alignment very simple and the encoder diagnostics very useful. The display does suffer and dims/slows in very cold conditions. The Pros of the scope: The price point for aperture, accuracy, ease of setup and transport are outstanding. The Cons: Getting the azimuth encoder correctly placed and not pinching or damaging it is a little tricky, but doable. The readability of the screen in cold weather and cord length. I should also mention that the savages at FedEx home deliver managed to puncture the secondary cage and crack the plastic tube cover. Orion send a replacement the very day, no questions asked. My wife has submitted a full review of the XX12 to Cloudynights.com with photos. It will probably be published late January or February. Overall and excellent package, I highly recommend the XX12.

Received our xx12 truss tube about 3 weeks ago. First off I've never put a telescope together. This is my first. The instructions are dead on. all the parts are easily identified. The whole process took me about 3 hours. Be careful to use the right washers in the base. First light has finally came. Being in Seattle it is cloudy alot in the winter. So from my light polluted sky without any filter we tracked down m42. wow. what detail. No need to say any more. This thing is built like a tank. assembly in the field is really super easy . We did not use the object locator this night, that will come next. Thanks Orion. Love it . cloudy in seattle

Yes the XX12 costs a little bit more than its direct competitors, but the mechanical improvements easily make up for the cost. The increased altitude bearings size, reinforced based, sturdier truss design, and upgraded focuser really make this scope stand out. The optics are exactly what you would expect. That is, images that are 125% brighter than an eight inch. The object locator is a great tool that allowed me to win a battle against my neighborhood street lights. I only gave it four stars because I don't grade on a curve for price, and the azimuth motions have a little bit more resistance than I would prefer and I wish the upper tube assembly was a little longer to block stray light. Other than that: PERFECT!

I received my XX12 IntelliScope and unpacked it and found it to be in good order and proceeded to assembly. The instructions were easy to understand and accurate and assembly and alignment took only about two hours. The altitude and azimuth bearings are smooth and the truss tube design is rock solid with no flexing between the primary and secondary sections. The scope is well balanced and the CorrecTension system easily accommodates a change from lightweight eyepieces to the heaviest eyepiece I own. Collimation is fast and easy because the scope comes equipped with large adjustment knobs so there is no need to purchase these as is the case with some other scopes. Setup takes only minutes and no tools are required. I also purchased the padded cases and light shroud so transportation is easy and the shroud increases contrast and reduces air currents and fits snugly. I like everything about this scope but one feature stands out. The focuser is a dream! It's Crayford design with (roller) bearings is silky smooth with zero image shift and it's 11:1 fine focus eliminates that back and forth focus overshoot. And if this wasn't enough, Orion added their IntelliScope computerized object locating system, making this just about the best 12" Dob around. This scope is a keeper.

I received my SkyQuest XX12 last Saturday morning, the instructions were clear and assembly was straightforward. I have since been rewarded each evening with stunning views of the heavens through my XX12! The operation of the telescope in both azimuth and altitude is smooth and easy, allowing me to effortlessly keep an object centered in the eyepiece. The altitude tensioning system works well even with my heaviest eyepieces, allowing me to concentrate on enjoying what I am looking at rather than having to keep the telescope balanced. All in all I am very pleased with my XX12. Thank you Orion for providing me with such a wonderful instrument!

This is my sixth telescope that I have built or assembled and for starters, I found the assembly manual of Orion's new XX12 dob to be written in plain and easy to understand language. Far better than any others I've read. Actual assembly itself was found to be easy and straight forward. The big bonus was that EVERY SINGLE COMPONENT WAS PRESENT IN THE BOXES AND EVERY SINGLE COMPONENT FIT WITH NO MODIFICATION. The truss tubes, when attached, are really rock solid and fit very well into their mounts. They are well designed and manufactured. Locating the thin nylon washer for one of the encoders was probably the hardest part of the entire process. Another pair of hands would speed the assembly, but don't be afraid to tackle this honker by yourself. I did and assembly took about 2 and a quarter hours. I took it out tonight and sighted in on the Trapizium in Orion. HOOOO- baby! The four main stars jumped out and seemed as large as match heads in the eye piece and for the first time I picked up two of the companion stars that I had read about but never observed. You can call me well satisfied.

Don't let the truss design fool you, this thing is built like a tank! There is no flexing going on between the 2 pieces. The instructions are dead on and make everything easy to assemble. Moving at a steady pace took me about 2 hours. I would recommend a laser collimator or catseye tool as after I collimated it with the included cap the laser seemed to tell me I was way off and it was right, I was way off. The primary came with a shrink wrap on it that left streaks but a quick call to Orion customer service fixed that. Ill let them tell you how to get it off but its real easy and did the trick. I'll leave actual viewing reviews to another person as I've only had 2 days of viewing so far but the views were awesome!!! If you have any light pollution at all you need the light shroud as this big light bucket pulls in light from everywhere.
